I recently had to sell my closet to pay bills and buy food but I look at it as pressing the reset button on my aesthetic. I already have my new wardrobe planed out in my head for when I start working again.
That sucks, I understand being under the gun and having to flip a couple of pieces to pay the bills BUT when one door closes another one opens, now you have the chance to reshape the wardrobe.
personally, I find that when I save up for a piece that is actually something that I've wanted towards my style/aesthetic I don't get satisfied, but more enlightened. the more that I stick to this discipline, I feel that it also builds my persona with fashion and clothing. that being said, I'm not sure how easy it's going to be to try different elements to see how complimentary it can be.
The point you made about discipline is something I have yet to hear from anyone giving advice about fashion. It is something I'm glad I came across. Thanks for your wisdom
This really got me thinking! Like omg. My friends always ask me why I always end up window shopping for hours and hours without buying anything and I never know how to answer to them without making myself seem a poor guy or worse, a miser. but it’s true. I wait for that one piece, thinking so much about it, imagining it in my wardrobe paired with other pieces I have. It’s not a punishment for me. Imma show them this video next time. GOOD JOB MAN!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
The intro is hilarious felt kinda like a 4th wall breaking. Video is so good and just exactly what I needed. I used to buy mindlessly but now I'm so into the idea of owning less/buying less and beating favorite pieces to death. I noticed that I justify my purchases by thinking that I'm trying wearing new stuff and develop my style when in reality it postponing me getting something I really want and need. You need to be disciplined and you need to learn to appreciate beauty of garments without necessarily owning them. I also feel like once you made a couple of fits from the picture in your head and bought the pieces and it worked just as you imagined you don't really need to buy a lot of stuff "for experience". Maybe buying a lot of stuff may lead to some kind of burnouts with losing interest in fashion too because you don't get the kick anymore and grails seems to be unreachable therefore you're feeling frustration. This video really got me thinking!
stoked you really have the gears turning. The one truth (or at least the 1 thing that I experience with my wardrobe) is soemtimes I think I'll love a piece and I have all the "right" intentions but it just doesnt fit me or it doesnt work the way I wanted. othertimes I'll pick up a piece and then fall in love like it becomes a favorite. Still trying to eliminate that kind of roll the dice element with building my wardrobe up
@@BraveNewWear Yeah man, you are absolutely right! I experience the same thing it's almost like if you are up to experimentation you must pay such expenses
I'm also in that mindset of wearing out my clothes as much as I can, taking them look old and worn gives them more of a presence. I'm currently downsizing my sneaker collection and buying less tees which are by far my favorite and biggest part of my wardrobe.
Another way to think about it is, brands should work really hard for your money, not just kind of convince you but really win you over if you're going to make a purchase.
Easier said than done sensei. Often times I regret pulling the trigger on an amazingly priced item only to regret it later when I'm unable to fill that void with anything in that price range.
Great video, my fellow fashion paladin. Agree with budgeting. What I personally find helpful is to allocate some money per month for clothes. If I want to get something but have reached my budget, I’d try to get it the following month. That also gives me time to reflect on whether or not I really need or want it.
the budgeting and WAITING I think is key, its easy to make a bad impulse decision but if you have to wait and think about it you'll typically only cop things that are worth it.
I realized during this quarantine that there are only like 3 items in my closet I can see myself wearing years from now. The rest is just attempts to fit someone else’s aesthetic/follow trends. I’ve been trying to practice discipline with my wardrobe ever since I realized that. H&M, Forever 21, Brandy Melville,... never again! (I’m also trying to stay away from fast fashion). Btw, one of the items I can see myself wearing years from now is a coat that I got a year after first seeing it. That’s how I knew I really wanted it!
I was looking for a specific 205w39nyc sweater for like 2 years, I wasn't sure about it when I saw it hit ~350 in an end of season sale. And I just kept regretting not buying it since then. I was constantly thinking how well it would work with my other clothes. Since then, I had been periodically looking for them for sale, until one night in last december I saw it in the right size. $300 on grailed, I was really excited and decided to sleep on it and the next morning it was gone LOL.... I haven't seen one pop up for sale since then feelsbadman
That’s truly a sad story, a story about loss. It can be hard sometimes u feel like you need to act NOW (that’s how they manipulate u) but sometimes your perfect piece is right there and u gotta act
Hey man, I’ve really been enjoying your work and love the videos you have been putting out. I’m wondering if there is anyone that is talking about women’s fashion that you can recommend checking out. I really like your vibe/approach and am not really finding many people talking about women’s fashion in a way that’s...like resonating with me the way your content is. I’m sure people are out there doing work that I’ll appreciate but I’m not really sure who they are.
Good question, Ayo from the fashion archive did a live stream about this recently, kind of interesting how women’s fashion has always been the dominant force (and for decades its been the focus of all compelling fashion design and thought) but where is the idea focused fashion content for women on YT? It might be something I should cover in an upcoming video that’s the truth I don’t have a great answer (obvi please don’t leave when u find that great content)
I’ll definitely checkout Ayo’s work, that live stream sounds super interesting. And I’m definitely not going anywhere, I’ve been watching for almost a year now and I enjoy the content too much to leave.
1. Have you clicked on your link to your IG in the description? I died 2. I recently did thinks and sold a bunch of the “trendy” things I had; I feel lighter and “schedule” when I’m going to buy pieces that I want from particular brands (a lot more local/Canadian since I’m in Canada as well) and it feels so gratifying
thats great Eric I understand the impulse of wanting to pick up trendy pieces (like I love those bottega veneta chelsea boots I think they look so cool) but when you follow an aesthetic that is unique and you make a more meditated choice I think it's always going to feel a little more gratifying and it will certainly have a longer life in your wardrobe.
Ok so I think I found my aesthetic but there's still a lot of things I like that don't fit into it and if I try to incorporate everything I would end up having no aesthetic whatsoever. Not only clothes, but there's films, music and art in general I truly love and get inspired from but don't relate to the aethetic I'm building. Any advice?
HMMMM hard to say, I think being eclectic is natural especially RN and sometimes having really DIFFERENT influences is what creates something truly unique. Consider anything that might connect the various things that you enjoy or simply embrace the fact that its all divergent and eclectic
@@BraveNewWear thanks! yes I thought more about it and I think I found the connection between mostly everything, but also accepting the ecclective side. It was an almost trascendent realization to me and the way I see art in general lol. Thanks again for this amazing series and your advice! keep it up :))
I have a serious problem with buying stuff i think i'll wear because it's cheaper than normal. I jumped on a carhartt wip hoodie on salw, and my order got cancelled due to inventory errors and it made me think about how if i was buying it cos it was cheap or if i had a serious idea of what to do with it also fashion paladin is funny as fuck
someone get him on the horn and see if he will collaborate (real talk, i'm working on a video and he would be an ideal person to include...idk if he will respond to my DMs tho)

I really think a girlfriend would ruin my aesthetic thats why I don’t have one obviously.
now...thats commitment. keep it up you're doing the lords work.
Lol, I know you're joking but having a gf that doesn't have good fashion sense can actually harm your vibe/aesthetic.
what a goat

My man Uther with that Lightbringer drip 😩👌
blessing of drip: increase damage done by flexing by 15%
Discipline is everything in life. I love your channel by the way, been binging them this whole week. I am sticking around.
Completely agree that discipline is so important man. Especially since there are more brands than ever putting product out. Great video!

I love that you used the Smite character version of Bacchus
lol its those little details

That lit mobile ad literally showed up before this intro and for a minute I thought it was real
I legitimately think lit mobile is spending hundreds of thousands to millions on youtube ads right now if they are this prevalent.
