I have 2 MS170s, both with 16" bars and upgraded metal bumper stocks. These are my go-to saws and are real workhorses. I regularly cut 12-14" trees with no issues. I also have an 038AV, if I need a longer bar. The MS170 will cut maple, ash cherry and ironwood without hesitation.
When I grew up I watched a tv show called Quincy, Medical Examiner starring Jack Klugman. You remind me of his methodical way. It’s why I call you the coroner of chainsaws. You are always thorough. Thanks for educating the rest of us!
I have a 170 and this was very helpful to me even though my saw is running properly. I added it to my Stihl chainsaw folder for future reference if needed. Thanks again.❤
I found with my 170 that when choked it isn't fully choked. It won't start very well. Great video. It's nice sometimes just talking about issues you see with all the saws you see
Very good advice about using fast idle instead of full throttle to start a flooded saw. This is much easier for the user. I don't want to bore you, but for the last 10 years or so in Europe, MS 170&180 have used airhead stratified scavenging, so they could meet emissions standards without using a catalytic converter.
Most chainsaw owners are too eager or don't even bother looking at the owners manual at all. And new owners need a full complete comprehensive class about chainsaws on oil, fuel mixture and normal maintenance.
Sometimes, removing the spark plug in a couple of seconds to release pressure is the easiest way to check an engine that won't start. And the best thing to do in a flooded engine is to remove spark plug and pull starter pulley several times, clean and dry the spark plug then try to start the engine again 😁.
Today I cleaned my MS180 after use throughout spring summer and part of autumn. It won’t be used till Spring next year now. I leave half a tank of fuel in my chainsaw and am confident it will start easily next Spring. I don’t use True fuel or anything similar just UK 5% Ethanol fuel (gas) mixed with Stihl HP Super 2 stroke oil and Ethanol Shield and am confident my chainsaw will start easily. So why pay huge sums of £’ s or$’s for Ethanol free gas. Anyway best way I found to clean chainsaw, after taking bar and chain off use compressed air gun to blow off worst of the wood chippings mixed up with bar oil, then use a degreaser solution and finally rinse with pressure washer after which I start up chainsaw and run it for about 10 minutes to dry out. My chainsaw is packed away now for winter with half a tank of fuel for about 6 months and confident I will start it with no problem next Spring. My father taught me to look after my tools and in return they will look after you!
Thank you for another great informative video. I always learn something new with your vids. I have noticed that the MS170 and the FS38 Trimmer can be finicky at times. Maybe it does have something to do with outsourcing to China. Not sure, but I agree with you that I prefer manufacturing to stay North American side. Just had a MS170 yesterday that had water in the fuel and of course wouldn't start. Just the amount of debris that got past the air filter was a wonder the piston/cylinder wasn't scored. Thanks again! And, yes, please do more vids when you can! :)
My 170 has always been cantankerous when starting. I contributed it to fuel starvation because I always run the saws until fuel empty. Many times 10 pulls full choke before first pop. But she does a nice job after starting . Made in N. America .
Nice for the customer that it wasn’t anything major. Good tips on clearing a flooded machine. My newest saws didn’t come with manuals. But that is because they were from auction and I got two Craftsman, a Poulan, an old Homelite an an Eager Beaver McCulloch for $45. One of the Craftsman included a in the package new bar and chain. But no manuals. Guys don’t read manuals anyway. 😅
Even after you educate the owner and show them how start a cold, hot,or a flooded engine they will get home a mess it up. Swearing it’s Erica’s fault . Oh well people’s lack of knowledge means work for you. Keep them coming.😊😂❤
great content. Glad I found your channel.... I didn't know about spark arresters getting clogged, now I do. I will try the high idle unflooding procedure. I hold the throttle open with one hand, on run setting and pull until it starts. It's a bit awkward though. Always good to learn new things. cheers
I feel like there's an inefficiency in your plastic jug / glass jar fuel fuel inspection. 😏. Perhaps a glass jug with a spout? Keep these great videos coming. 👍
Had trouble starting my MS250. Took a peek behind the muffler… no spark arrestor at all ? there was carbon buildup and some obvious heat damage between the cylinder and the muffler. Was able to start the machine with the muffler removed. Any ideas? I use premium Stihl 2 stroke oil but always use a touch more than 50:1. Anything obvious I am missing? Too much oil in my fuel?
As someone who is also a Stihl dealer I can tell you Stihl saws do not like to run on the pink or red fuels. Drain that fuel and put in Motomix or Premium fuel with Stihl mix oil and majority of the time they start right up and run perfectly.
Flooded or really badly. I will drain the fuel and purge the carb with primer and open throttle max and pull till the mixture leans out enough to start. I empty tank so theres no way any more fuel can enter carb and cylinder If that still fails, i remover plug and use a air hose to pour air down into sump to evaporate any fuel in there and then prime it all for normal start. Also just double check spark that you dont have issue there!! I had a old one that i got and it took so long to clear it will i found a very rich carb with wrong high float setting. So when i get a saw, i check the carb first and clean and set it , then try normal start procedure. I have to do all that anyway, so go over it quickly and also any hoses missing which could dump air into engine and ruin the mixture.
Had an MS170 until someone gave me a barely used MS250C and I eventually chose to keep that instead. Now really miss the light weight of the 170 for small work, really regret having sold it. MS250C (45cc) is powerful for it's size but, is way more finicky to start and, just as heavy as my larger 50-60cc saws.
That choke butterfly was filthy for such a relatively clean saw; fines shouldn't really be getting to that point. I know that filter style isn't the best, but still.
Is it bad for the saw to run without the spark arrester? What is its purpose? Great channel. Really like watching you go through tour process with the saws.
I'm sticking with my dirty Old Mummy-Fart Poulans from the 70s, and 80s. The EPA can eat a BIGGUN. Tru-Fuel's quality is pretty spotty. Chickanic has several videos regarding starting issues with Tru-Fuel.

Think you need to show the owner how to start a saw. Another good video
Given Chickanic's videos, I wouldn't be surprised if the tru-fuel is the problem.

OEM carbs on the 170 are known issues. installed an aftermarket on mine no further issues. 1st saw was returned for replacement on day one

Hi Erica Great video 👍
MS170 has been discontinued in the US as well. The MS162 is fine except for the bar - they got rid of the nose sprocket entirely.

Chickanic has had several Stihl saws in her shop that would not run on Tru Fuel, but ran fine on mixed gas. Some saws are quirky.
My little ms194t is the best saw I've ever used for yard maintenance so much better quality than those homeowner grade saws
I had once 193, unfortunately that wasnt a good saw, i still have it, if i have time i check it over. When it worked, it was so light to work.

Maybe he didn’t have the choke all the way on. You need to depress the throttle to put choke fully on
FYI there's different colors of gas here in Bulgaria even the same octane rating from different stations has different colors. Also there's no spark arrestors on any equipment in EU.
In your last video I left a message on echo pre mixed gas they do make it
