The tender height being slightly lower than the locomotive makes sense to me, it's representing a tender weighed down with coal & water, while the one in the NRM is completely empty.

Hi sam, loved the video! I think one reason for such a high price may actually be because of the rails partnership. Because of this, rails sold the locomotive at the rrp, rather then 10 or 20 pounds lower as most retailers do with these sort of models. For example, the hattons genesis coaches and the hornby ones have the same rrp, but the hornby ones are cheaper at retailers by about 5 pounds due to the price reduction.

Especially when you see that the pulling power is not really down the drain without traction tyres, even if it's not exceptionnal. 50 grams more weight in the locomotive would not be a luxury... Not a shelf queen, but you won't be able to do more than 2/3 coaches local trains in exploitation without the tyres. Agreed with your rating. As is, GBP 150 is an acceptable RRP. If they correct all the points I have listed, they can ask for GBP 200 in my opinion. Dapol can, and have (43xx Mogul) done excellent things, they ought to be more consistent in their products range. When the brand new Bachmann V2 will be out, I will be highly interested in your review. The price is roughly the same...
Yeah it seems so... wonder if the different tenders are interchangeable?! Some say the height discrepancy was intentional... but intentional or not, it's inappropriate for the preserved example represented by my example, so I insist I was right to mention it! xD It is a pity about the price - had it been lower, it would have matched the model far better! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Overpriced, overly fragile and a stupid mechanism, I rather have the DCC Socket in the tender than taking up room in the smoke box/boiler. That way you can get more weight over the front drivers, something Hornby got right on their D16/3 4-4-0 - however someone at the factory decided not to fit the fly wheeled motor (same as the K1) which the chassis was tooled to make, which lessened the performance slightly. It's a simple transplant too.
It's a tricky thing though - the DCC socket is in the front of the boiler/smokebox... so any extra weight there would make the loco front-heavy and unbalanced. I love the clever DCC fitting solution... but it did work better in the Mogul where there was enough space for a flywheel too. A flywheel in this model would have improved performance and also the weight! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Beautiful model Sam! These engines are very beautiful, especially in their SECR green livery! Good to have 737 preserved! Let's hope she'll get the chance to be restored! Maybe even get donated to the Bluebell Railway!!
Its already been confirmed a while back by the NRM that they have no plans to restore 737 to operating condition, hence the reason behind the SECR E class project down at the Bluebell railway.
Man even when I was little I remember sams trains videos and man are they amazing still are to this day thank you Sam for getting me into model railroading
Great review thanks, I received mine yesterday same livery but not the preserved version - same price though - its a lovely model. Two buffers on the tender fell off mine too and I had to glue them on as they only fall off again when you push them back on on there little clips. Like you I also found that the coal doesn't fit very well in the tender and will require some adjustment. Saw the original when it was on the turntable at NRM York it and the model are stunning.
They did, but it wasn’t intuitive - the smoke box was held on with neo magnets which are expensive, and inside was a mess of wires, with a socket floating around somewhere inside. This solution, with the drawer, is way better!
I’ve been waiting for this one! Just to let you know the ytp is finished feel free to check it out if you like I think it’s only 50 or so seconds but loved the video - Ollie
Received mine last Friday: (1) SE&CR 488 and (2) Southern Sunshine 1734. They are beautiful! The detailing is marvellous especially the firebox and crew's view of the boiler. I do agree with you that the rubber tires are not needed. All in all a great but for a museum quality model. Shaun in Maryland.
I have to say, that steam engine actually kind of looks like the Furness Railway K2 tender engine! (I hope it gets made in any model train toy company.)
Sam as you correctly mentioned just less than 30 survived nationalisation, no mean feat for a locomotive from 1901 with modifications! So where were they then in 1950? I never got to see any of them as the 1950’s progressed they disappeared. What an amazing career! The list shows where they all ended up. Excellent Review you just get better!
That was the most comprehensive detail review I’ve ever seen! Bit of a polarising loco though. Incredible detail, good performance but the price and quality left a bit to be desired. Got to say, I love the shine on that dome!
OMG the cab roof has just come off! What the hell are they playing at? £199.xx man that should go back to them and a PERFECT replacement delivered in person by the Boss of Dapol!
Bit of an over reaction! Could quite easily have been OK when dispatched from the NRM/Dapol/Rails and dislodged during postage as they are hardly light when handling parcels!
haha yeah - not too big a deal, but the general loose fit of multiple parts was a bit concerning - bit more fragile than most, unnecessarily so! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@mattlander9119 Ok perhaps not the boss, but come on it's a £200 model for Adult collectors, not a children's toy from a pound shop, and they are better quality!
Wow, that is a really fine looking model with so much fine detail; I take it that gentle handling is required when picking the locomotive up - I noted the spare parts list in the manual in case replacements are required.
for the record i wont watch this till mine arrives, BUT I REALLY WANT TO!!!!! IM SO EXCITED FOR IT TO ARRIVE, hopefully this coming week fingers crossed
This engine is so gorgeous! I might consider buying one myself :) Completely unrelated question but how did you film the background for the ratings screen? The wagons seem to be going round constantly but I cant see how it was done.
It is lovely isn't it - I can recommend it! It's just a camera trick... or rather an editing trick... it was quite a headache to make actually!! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That price point speaks a lot I mean I really wanted to have a lot of cool features and good quality but I don't think it's really hit the mark great review by the way
Not with bits dropping off before he got it out of the box, and then the cab roof coming off and loose handrails, for £200 give or take, I would rather have a O gauge 08.
A much better deal is Hornby R3544 LNER B12. All METAL die-cast body, pickups on all the gloriously painted wheels, two flywheels -- it's the one Sam called "superb", "phenomenal" and "stunning", and gave 8.84 rating score. And -- the price is only L 145!
That's right - had it been all metal, 100% perfect, and packed with features, then it may just about have been worth it... but this just wasn't. Mr ShepardDog's right... Hornby's B12 is a real benchmark engine, and it's far cheaper... yet far larger, and almost entirely metal! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I have a DCC sound one of these and it runs a lot slower while still having good torque and a decent top speed. Re inserting the crankpins is a massive pain but became a lot easier once I put a tiny bit of bluetac onto the included tool which then allows it to hold a crank pin which made it much easier
Just received the same model but with sound! Great model. Tender and loco line up perfectly and no issues with the cab roof or handrails that you experienced. Have kept the traction tyres for now but may change at a later date. The only criticism I have found, like you, is the loco is a tad light. But, all in all, a superb model. Well done Dapol.
Hi Sam, totally agree. Mine has just arrived (with sound), direct from Dapol. Everything perfect with nothing detached. Either I was lucky or you were unlucky! Definitely needs a copper topped chimney though. Another great review Sam. Keep them coming.
Well done Sam, a very good & informative review and what a classic, British Loco designers really hit their stride with many excellent 4-4-0 designs and this one is no exception. Great to see that at least we now have them in model form. What is it about green locos that looks so good!
If a loco is "on the light side, there are ways to make it heavier. Strips (taken from a piece of roofing lead) can ne fitted under the running plate, or hidden anywhere it can help, and not be seen. Brilliant production.👍.
Thanks very much Marin - yeah £160 at the absolute maximum. The Hornby T9 cost me £152, which is very comparable to this in terms of quality... and I felt that even that was on the expensive side! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yep - it's too light unfortunately! I understand it's not easy to make models like this heavier... but if Hornby managed it with the B2 Peckett for £100, Dapol should have managed it here for £200! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The wheel slip acts as a clutch too. With the traction tires on it could put too much strain on the loco. Well done Sam. Top work as ever. You should team up with hornby, design the ultimate model and you to oversee the quality control. What a model that would be 😍
That's absolutely true Tim - a very good point indeed! Appreciate the kind words... but Hornby don't need me to tell them that... they know exactly how to make a top notch mechanism... if they don't do it, it's because they're deliberately saving money! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Very pleased with how thorough and consistent your reviews have become - you definitely deserve recognition for that... and with the number of subscribers you have, I guess you are getting that recognition. I don't really agree with you about traction tires. But then I do much of my modelling in N gauge, where traction tends to be a more major issue... and locos just aren't much use to me if they can't pull a reasonable train up a decent incline. Absolutely agree that good weight is a better option... but I'd rather have traction tires than have a loco that can't pull a few coaches or wagons up a modest incline.
Got mine Saturday Sam runs great with the Bachman SE&CR coach set behind it, No issue's with parts falling off so far, Got a six function Imperium decoder for it but not been able to set up the fire box lighting but not worried at the moment as i am still running in. Good revue but as you said a little expensive. Regards Alan.
We work in various scales but this month splashed out on one of the rivals? Yes a London CHATHAM & Dover Europa Class. I was the only bidder at just over twice the price of this! Similar livery and details but a 2-4-0. 5 inch gauge... Which will surprise. The drawings are hopeless and only a few have been built Hence the lack of interest. We are now doing 2 of them so mass production. Real metal that gets hot on ours. Lovely model. David & Lily.
Gonna be completely honest. Considering there isn't any Furness Railway K2 locomotives on the market at the moment, this would be a really good model for a custom Edward from TTTE!
I have just received the other SECR version in the silk livery & like yours the cab roof was loose but no problem with loose buffers fortunately! At least you can fit crew easily into the cab! Mine makes a bit of a racket and jumps and stalls occasionally on the points but despite all that i think it's a wonderful model! Yes i agree it's a bonkers price and perhaps i should've returned it to Rails for a replacement? Bit loathe to do it as i had to return the Bachmann Midland 1P if you remember Sam? Had to wait ages before i got it back as it was sold out on pre-order plus the faff of course. Just wish the manufacturer's quality control was better especially at these crazy prices these days.
A couple of points; The 'Westinghouse Pump' on the offside is not a Westinghouse Pump but is the Stirling steam reverser. The prototype had more lining on it than has been depicted but I can understand why it has been left off. Secondly I personally don't like the colour used on the various handrails and smoke box door fittings, it makes them look chromium plated not burnished steel
I'm glad that I watched your review as I have just opened the Rails version of the loco and exactly the same buffer and cab roof were lose in the packaging!
Sorry to hear that Roger - I've had many comments and messages saying exactly the same thing... it's a bit of a Dapol trademark unfortunately! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
For me, it was either this or the Caledonian 812 by Bachmann. I chose the 812. Maybe it will go on bargain at some point (probably not but I'm hoping), but 200 pounds is just too much, especially when converting that to USD and adding international shipping.
As a person that used to collect diecast cars and trucks, I agree that the amount of diecast should reflect in the price. It's understandable how an excessive amount of weight can hinder the performance of certain models. But it servers no excuse for them to cut broad corners. They should include metal crew figures and cab accessories to act as additional ballast.
13:45 🧐 Well I see my problem about missing Buffer Beam comes out a back of left side Tender. But lucky found it, so I put it back together with Revell Contacta Professional Glue.
I don't model the SECR, though I have been a fan of Edwardian railways most of my life, particularly the LNWR. But I fell in love with the curves of the Wainwright D class from when I first saw photos of it as a lad (before I fell properly in love with curves of a different kind). So I had to have the Locomotion version. Yes, the price is a bit eye-watering for a DC analogue, British outline loco, but it's a one-off and not much different to the forthcoming LNWR Precedent, which is another "must have" for me personally. I haven't had a chance to test run the model yet, but it won't be required to be a workhorse on my layout. Its mainly for show. And what a show! On appearance it's an absolute stunner. The model perfectly (apart from the slight discrepancy in loco/tender solebar heights, though not as obvious on mine at normal viewing distance) captures the flowing lines and personality of the real thing and the level of finish and detail, particularly the lining ad lettering, is superb. Regarding the chimney cap, a photo of Class D No. 470, in 1906, "resplendent in all the glory of Wainwright brightwork" as Rixon Bucknall says in his book "Our Railway History" first published in 1944, clearly shows the chimney cap in a darker shade than the dome and whistle. The only quibbles I had on unboxing were that the spare crankpins and tool were loose in the packaging and almost got immediately lost and the poorly fitting and not particularly realistic coal load was loose. Everything else is in place and tight on mine. So, from my experience, there's very little to take issue with on quality. I expect the weight/traction tyre issue is part of a complex design trade-off between the need to squeeze gizmos into the small space and cost. Given the amount of hand-finishing that must have been required at the factory to achieve the quality and detail and the relatively small runs of the large number of variants, I don't feel the £199 price is very excessive, although it is high. I was tempted by the DCC sound version but I simply can't justify the additional cost of that. I mainly model Swiss HO and HOm and 200 quid would rarely buy a Swiss electric loco which is basically a plastic box on powered bogies with much less complexity.
Hi Sam i like the Dapol coupel betwwn loco and tender. And the ease to convert to dcc. Maerklin sadly do not have the ease to convert to dcc. When convert to dcc you have to on some models hard wire the dcc. I like Dapol ease to service the model. Keep up the good work.
Great review as always! Would like to add that not only is the underframe detail excellent, but it is actually slightly hollow meaning you can at the right angles see straight through to the track/ballast below which is just incredible (although I wonder if that's partly why it isn't diecast) Cheers Sam!
Yes you are right about that actually - a 40 minute video and I still didn't manage to cover all of the little features and details... it is a remarkable model, don't get me wrong! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I would like to see this on the rolling road with the current draw while running in. Fluctuations or a drift in current upwards or too high a current draw being an indicator of motor problems. I would like this to be a standard test for all your reviews so that your audience will learn a bit more about motors and mechanisms.

Like you I also found that the coal doesn't fit very well in the tender and will require some adjustment. Saw the original when it was on the turntable at NRM York it and the model are stunning.
Didn't DJM do something similar to the smokebox DCC socket from Dapol first, and you got mad about it? Why is it so great now? Just very curious.
They did, but it wasn’t intuitive - the smoke box was held on with neo magnets which are expensive, and inside was a mess of wires, with a socket floating around somewhere inside. This solution, with the drawer, is way better!
@@SamsTrains Oh, that makes a lot of sense.
A fine loco from Dapol Sam, and a real stunner to look at for which they need to be congratulated...Another great review Sam...Bob.
I’ve been waiting for this one! Just to let you know the ytp is finished feel free to check it out if you like I think it’s only 50 or so seconds but loved the video - Ollie
Thanks Ollie! And haha sure - checking it out now!! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
(I hope it gets made in any model train toy company.)
aka edward.
Sam as you correctly mentioned just less than 30 survived nationalisation, no mean feat for a locomotive from 1901 with
modifications! So where were they then in 1950?
I never got to see any of them as the 1950’s progressed they disappeared. What an amazing career!
The list shows where they all ended up. Excellent Review you just get better!
Yes I suppose that is quite remarkable isn't it? Many thanks for the kind words Leroy,
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That was the most comprehensive detail review I’ve ever seen! Bit of a polarising loco though. Incredible detail, good performance but the price and quality left a bit to be desired. Got to say, I love the shine on that dome!
Thanks so much Harry - glad you liked it! Yeah the dome looks very good indeed! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It sure is David - and very much so, the gentler the better!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
for the record i wont watch this till mine arrives, BUT I REALLY WANT TO!!!!! IM SO EXCITED FOR IT TO ARRIVE, hopefully this coming week fingers crossed
Amazing Michael - hope you really enjoy yours! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This engine is so gorgeous! I might consider buying one myself :)
Completely unrelated question but how did you film the background for the ratings screen? The wagons seem to be going round constantly but I cant see how it was done.
I was wondering about that, the set on the right don't seem to have a loco,
Pheobe: You can see the strings people 😂
@@harleypurcell7766 uhh...no you can't...the background is blurred...
Well done Sam, a very good & informative
review and what a classic, British Loco designers really hit their stride with
many excellent 4-4-0 designs and this one is no exception. Great to see that at
least we now have them in model form. What is it about green locos that looks
so good!
Thanks very much Leroy - we really are spoilt with the choice of 4-4-0s now!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Kind of a coincidendce that this video got recommended to me while i was making a 3d model of this loco :)
Detailing can be so small but then they make the models overall quality improve so much
Yep - there sure is an improvement in quality, I'll give them that!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
If I’m being honest that looks more like Edward than a K2 does
True
I love your James’ Accident video. Especially the verse of: *Edward’s big fat bottom!* 😂
haha thank you so much!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
WOAH! I was not expecting a locomotive that fancy for HO scale! That model is impressive Sam!
If a loco is "on the light side, there are ways to make it heavier. Strips (taken from a piece of roofing lead) can ne fitted under the running plate, or hidden anywhere it can help, and not be seen. Brilliant production.👍.
Were about to see a LOT of new edward models
I love my Dapol Mogul in early BR lined green That being said, this loco is stunning.
Stunning looking locomotive, not sure about the price though.
Me too Rob - think they've over-flattered their model slightly with that price!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
As usual Sam I completely agree with you. Beyond lovely to look at and a good runner. However £200 is far too much. As you say £160 seems right.
Thanks very much Marin - yeah £160 at the absolute maximum. The Hornby T9 cost me £152, which is very comparable to this in terms of quality... and I felt that even that was on the expensive side!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Too much wheel slipping = too light, it should be able to pull more that 3 of them older coaches even without the traction tyers !
Agreed there. 4 coaches is rubbish!!
The Hornby peckett would handle 4 coaches.
Yep - it's too light unfortunately! I understand it's not easy to make models like this heavier... but if Hornby managed it with the B2 Peckett for £100, Dapol should have managed it here for £200!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I'd like to see you do a weight experiment with light locos!
Maybe that'll be fun to try Jason - nice idea!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I have definitely spotted in lbsc Atlantic.
WOW ! . . .SO Many steam loco videos to see!
It's a great looking locomotive. I just hope that the Manor class locomotives are going to be better on weight and pulling power.
It sure is Ben - the Manor should be much better, as there's more space to play with!
Brilliant balanced review ty Sam. As a result I'm now waiting for mine to arrive 😃
Regards Alan.
oh my gosh, this loco is absolutely stunning!
It sure is Benji, I agree! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Wainwright's masterpiece as far as the look and livery are concerned, but the mechanical design is Robert Surtees' masterpiece...
I cannot get enough with this livery I think it is one of the best in the business. Fantastic review mate 🙂
You might be right - very few that are better!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
My vote for best pre-grouping railway livery is a tie between LBSC Umber and GER blue.
Great review
Gonna be completely honest.
Considering there isn't any Furness Railway K2 locomotives on the market at the moment, this would be a really good model for a custom Edward from TTTE!
haha yeah quite a few people have said that, though it's a lot to spend for an Edward!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yo this one of my favourites! I was hoping you’d upload a video on this!
Awesome! Yeah couldn't resist in the end!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains :D
Had to go and look up the wartime grey version on rails of Sheffield and I might have to get one for the layout!
Oh and happy midsummer to you Sam and your loved ones.
👍👍🇸🇪
If you preordered it would cost over $300!!!
It’s laughable that I paid £89 for a hattons p class dcc ready.
Well done Sam
That is sucha gorgeous locomotive. Keep up the good work Sam.
I agree Lucas, cheers mate! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The British model company’s need to take a look at marklin what they do is just insane the extreme level that a marklin model has
They certainly do! Now that the prices are comparable, the products should be too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This model: *exists*
Half of everyone: E d w a r d
Me too,I thought this locomotive looks like Edward.
Awesome video today Sam beautiful modle and that’s the one am after
As a person that used to collect diecast cars and trucks, I agree that the amount of diecast should reflect in the price. It's understandable how an excessive amount of weight can hinder the performance of certain models. But it servers no excuse for them to cut broad corners. They should include metal crew figures and cab accessories to act as additional ballast.
I like how the side rods move so satisfying
Me too - it's a glorious look! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I feel like if you modified the cab you would have a perfect edward basis
A very nice looking locomotive especially in that SECR green colour rails and dapol definitely did a great job with the model.
Thanks a lot David - they sure did! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Undeniably Gorgeous, if it weren't for the price then this could have been dapols best model.
Great review as always Sam 👍
Very much so - I agree - it's pretty close isn't it?: D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
A very nice loco in a few days an old princess royal is arriving with dcc hopefully it will impress
I just love that livery and shiny dome!
Me too! It sure is something isn't it? :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yay, New Loco! That's looks bloody amazing there mate!
Thanks my friend - it really does! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Well done dapol Beautiful locomotive and colourful
I would like to see this on the rolling road with the current draw while running in. Fluctuations or a drift in current upwards or too high a current draw being an indicator of motor problems. I would like this to be a standard test for all your reviews so that your audience will learn a bit more about motors and mechanisms.
Hi Sam. I paid 2 deposits, 1 to Rails of Sheffield (SECR DCC+Sound) and Dapol (Southern DCC+Sound) and I am still waiting for release announcement so I was not aware This model is now on general release. Dapol are still announcing it as coming soon !!!
Like Sam's, mine is the Locomotion version, shipped out last week.
This is the best-looking 4-4-0 I’ve ever seen
The detail is fantastic
@Sam’sTrains Hornby had released a NRM exclusive SR Q1 loco a long time ago. It’s a shame that you didnt have it in your collection.
Great video. I notice it has inside cylinders. Love the look of this model.
Now this... does put asmile on my face.-Das Mann
Glad to hear that - it did me too! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It looks like mix between the City of Turo and the Hornby Edward
On the plus side, dapol have updated some issues with the moguls in the second batch. With some luck, maybe these will receive the same treatment
From what I've seen I have to be honest, it's not worth anything near £200
