This is clearly about MK's time at the Chronicle in Newcastle. It sounds like the story of someone having to feign sympathy whilst invading peoples grief in order to get a story for the paper. The 'Colins and Bobs' were also referred to in the song Basil, which was also about his time at the chronicle. Absolutely beautiful writing.
Yes, but I wonder what might have turned him to write it though. I'm thinking of the possibility that when you get on a bit in life you face the fact that people around you start passing away. Perhaps the passing of a friend made him remember what he actually experienced as a young reporter, as you so well describe. Just a thought ❤💯🙏🎶
@@CarinTibellAhlin Yes, maybe so. Or perhaps it's just a reflection on early years when we (most of us, anyway) don't really know where we're going and realise much later that it probably wasn't anywhere very good.

Surely an acknowledgement that remaining where he was, was a one way ticket to a calcified heart.
He got out while he still hated the 'black tie jobs' but doubtless if he'd stayed it would have just become the norm and insincerity would have become an intrinsic part of his existence.

A song about passing away, from a particular point of view, after so many tragic deaths, when we kind of get used to death, and yet we can never do... I think this is one of the most beautiful, potetic and moving songs of all times. Mark is an absolute genius.
