Hi Dave. I've only recently "discovered" your UA-cam channel but I'm really enjoying your very cool and informative lessons. I lived in NY for 12 years from the late 80s' through the 90s' and I feel sure I've seen you play in NYC during that time. So basically, the progression works because D7 acts like the 5th of the 5th of the 5th of the 5th of E. And we add G7 because it acts like the 5th of the 5th of the 5th of E. Pretty simple really. 😅😂
