As a drummer myself I can honestly say there will NEVER be a greater drummer than Buddy. I met him one night and he was SO nice to me. He had me play his drums (the gig was over). And afterwards he bought me a drink, gave me a drum lesson at the table and gave me a pair of sticks that I still have mounted. I will never forget that night. He was just so kind to me. God rest his soul.
Good to the last drop with an unbelievably detailed take on the shout chorus of Big Swing Face. Buddy just lightin’ it up like all get-out. The ensemble playing is just electrifying.
You're right Chuck's a great lead player. I remember back at North Texas, Chuck played Principle Trumpet in the Chamber Orchestra at noon, then Lead with the 1o'clock. Talk about culture shock, but it never fazed Chuck.
The more I listen and watch this video, I am convinced it represents some of the best swinging and grooving Buddy did. Man he had a drive to him when he was playing the funk. He is sitting behind the set just dancing in his seat and was just killing those skins.
Like all the great bandleaders, he really knew how to pick 'em & what would connect w/ the public. Arrangements that R synonymous with them, ie One O'clock J w/ Basie, Black & Tan F w/ Duke, String of P w/ Miller, Let's Dance w/ Goodman. So many great big bands today but the ones w/ memorable classic arrangements are rare. When u think Big Swing Face, u think Buddy, Ya Gotta Try, Preach & Teach, it's Buddy. Birdland, West Side Story, it's Buddy. To quote Don Menza: "He knew what was good, & he knew what he liked. Nothing more & nothing less!"
I'm grateful for every Buddy Rich video, no matter how flawed! There is some heavy duty swinging going on here, let me tell you. There will never be another one like him! Thank you, great post!!
Yeah, you noticed that Buddy is playing Ludwig drums here not his habitual Slingerlands... :: Bob Kaye on piano, Tom Warrington on electric bass and a great saxophone section, including Andy Fusco on alto sax, and Steve Marcus.... a different arrangement of Big Swing Face to what appeared on the original Big Swing face LP......
Loved everything about this video, the camera work was great, close up like never before. How about Buddy and the trumpet player directing the camera over to the soloist. It looks like a lot of the people behind the band might be drummers as they were watching Buddy closely. I wish there was a lot more of this concert, truly amazing, thank you very much for posting.
-- Shame that one of Buddy's great cover versions, BIRDLAND, got snipped off, [this usually a 6-or-7 minute number, but here only lasts here from 5:00 to 5:43 ..... Never mind, eh, there are some pleasant shots of various hippies walking over the parkland... :)
I love at 11:55 Buddy is playing with one hand and pointing with the other hand for the camera man to point his camera at the trumpet player and he even says "right over there!" while not missing a single hit with the rest of the horn section.
Not another like BR. Very tight, precise, all great musicians, great sound. I don't expect another band like BR will emerge on the American scene anytime soon.
+Micky Earnshaw With due respect to the soloists here at least the bias of the cameraman was to be on Buddy (a good thing) let's be hones't that's why most 95% of us are here! lol
Buddy had just started back with Ludwig here, after finishing with Slingerland. He used Ludwig through to the end of 1982, before retuning to using his own Slingerlands from 1983-87.
Buddy hated rail consolette tom mounts. Ludwig made this custom center post mount Just for him. Not available to the public. A few other endorsers opted for that mount as well. Fun fact
At 20:21...I could almost could swear it's Louie Bellson at Buddy's left watching him in awe (for the record, I know it's not - but you have to admit the resemblance is uncanny)

What was this venue? Looks like the audience was seated all around the band. The band in t-shirts one number and in coat and tie the next. "Raitre"? "Schegge"? subtitles in the vid?
Opening number Parthenia Shelly Manne. Does anyone know the arranger? The version on the Birdlland CD is exceptional Andy Fusco, a.s. Steve Marcus, T.S. Dale Kirkland tb, Bob Kaye p Tom Warrington, b, Gary Pribeck t.s.
thank you . Do you know who was TPT solo? do the liner notes credit? I agree this is best version-+masterfully played, no clams, soundboard quality, Superior to Buddy & Soul outtake
Buddy telling the clueless cameraman to get his lens where the action is, lol. So frustrating sometimes when a soloist is tearing it up and the camera is on somebody else comping, resting, or wandering in the audience.
@@johntapscott4528 ThanK you. As an aside there are many drummers who imho excel in the writing department, Tony Williams, Bellson of course and Shelly Manne. Don Piestup is a great arranger too
"Parthenia" was composed/arr by Don Piestrup. It is not the tune written by Shelly Manne, although he did write one with the same title. Piestrup had an excellent rehearsal band in the SF bay area in the late 60's to 70's. It was originally titled "An Early Start". For reasons unknown, he re-titled it and assigned "An Early Start" to entirely different piece.
Hard to say.. Buddy Rich did so many gigs and concerts every year, and he never stopped touring the world's venues.... Tom Warrington is on electric bass, Andy Fusco is on alto saxophone and Bob Kaye at the piano..... The sound and the camera work are pretty good, so just enjoy it for what it is worth...
Ha …. Andy Fusco … Greatest lead/solo alto player of all time. You have no idea what a sax is supposed to sound like obviously. He had a very open full bodied sound much like Cannonball and Woods … Nobody could play those breaks like Andy.
In 10 million years we will still never appreciate how great that GOD was ❤
Thank you, bro! 💌
And, no matter how great it is or how blown away I get, it was another night on the road... Truly, a testament to his talent.
As a drummer myself I can honestly say there will NEVER be a greater drummer than Buddy. I met him one night and he was SO nice to me. He had me play his drums (the gig was over). great story!
Can your hands even do what you want them to do when Buddy's watching you play his drums? Also, approximately what year was that experience?
How lucky can you get ......
If you read my history with Buddy from age 11 to 29 , i experienced the time of my life with the guy .
Miss him like you cant believe .
This was my favorite version of his band. True genius.... All of them.
Every time you see Buddy you see something new that amazes you. His playing throughout Grand Concourse is astonishing.
RIP Mike McGovern. he was Buddy's absolute favorite trumpet soloist.
His all time favorite was Sweets Edison…
What an excellent view of Buddy's left hand!!
Good to the last drop with an unbelievably detailed take on the shout chorus of Big Swing Face. Buddy just lightin’ it up like all get-out. The ensemble playing is just electrifying.
...with Chuck Schmidt on Lead... WOW! One of the best leadplalyers ever, what a sound and style...
You're right Chuck's a great lead player. I remember back at North Texas, Chuck played Principle Trumpet in the Chamber Orchestra at noon, then Lead with the 1o'clock. Talk about culture shock, but it never fazed Chuck.
@@jim53bas Got to see Schmidt on the band 2 or 3 times in 1978. Arguably the finest lead player I ever heard.
What a BORN LEADER Buddy was!! Commanding presence!!

One of the best Buddy videos by far!

That's some unique footage I haven't heard or seen before. Thanks for posting it. (Cameramen... Geez.)
11:52 Haha. Good to see Buddy giving the band members some limelight.
Who's the outstanding 4th tpt?
Surely Buddy thanks you as well as we all do for the posting of this video!
This is an improvement in the quality of the copy I had previously, so I thank you very much.
Funny thing Cloudview, I stumbled on this and my first thought was..."I wonder if Cloudview has a more complete version of this?"...lol
Great show.
Woah...Andy Fusco...fantastic!
Fusco quotes "you and the night and the music" twice during his solo on "grand concourse"
He can do anything MR. DRUMS BUDDY RICH 🌟🖐️🖐️
Sinceramente o melhor de todos os tempos até hoje me admiro cada vez assisto me inspira apesar de muitas notas um nível impossível de se chegar
The way he plays some Rock part is outstanding..
Dale Kirkland- lead trombone; Greg Smith- baritone sax.Chuck Wilson- lead alto sax; Steve Marcus- 1st tenor sax.Tom Warrington- electric bass.
John Marshall - trumpet solo.Andy Fusco- alto sax solo. Barry Keiner-piano solo.
Are you sure that's BARRY KEINER? The CD says: Piano: Bob Kaye
Deffo ain't keiner
@@bernielove3019 I used to play with an Alto player Bob Martin who was in this band . Always looking for him in these clips

Someone told me it was Don Piestrup. Not 100% sure, but sounds like it could be his work.
Big Swing Face yes, it is one of Don's charts
Parthenia (AKA "An Early Start") was Comp/Arr. by Don Piestrup. Big Swing Face was Comp/Arr by Bill Potts
No, I was replying to the guy named Big Swing Face.
thank you . Do you know who was TPT solo? do the liner notes credit?

Don't hear too many drummers doing their own version's of "Grand Concourse" for some reason.
Buddy Rich number one 🥁
Paco de Lucía number one 🎸
Camilo Sesto number one 🎤
add the name of the tune if i didnt mistakenly run into this vid id never know it was here the name of the chart is "parthenia"
Bob mintzer on tenor sax?
Swinging “
Does anybody know the name of the very first chart - before Grand Concourse? I have been looking for the name and composer of that for some time.
Parthenia, Shelly Manne wrote it, (I believe); Don Piestrup arranged it.

Definitely an amateur camera work here-Buddy had to direct as well as drum!😎
The cameraman is horrible
Buddy's bandmates look abused lol
