Columbus: Rise and Fall of an American Myth
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 жов 2024
- This video covers the portrayal of Columbus through the centuries and how he was “mythified” to create an American hero that predates the Revolution and the Founding Fathers. The Columbus Myth has changed dramatically through the ages: from nearly disappearing after his death, to being glorified by the United States, to being torn down by modern scholars and popular culture, he has perhaps been polarized more than any other character in the history of the Americas. Please enjoy!
Special thanks to my wife, Ani, who worked late with me to edit and finalize this video.

@@UncivilHistory Hey man thank you for responding back. I have no idea how long it takes you to finish a animation but all I can say is that you have done an amazing job. Keep up the good work and wish you good luck.
Thank God you came back I missed you so much, great job as always !
This is a good video, and refreshingly nuanced. You did a good job looking at how the man is remembered in popular history, as well as the motivations behind those views.
Much appreciated!
This was a surprise to see! It’s interesting that the Founding Fathers held him in high regards and how society today has shifted to a more indigenous perspective on the conquest of the Americas.
Can’t wait to see your future projects!
I couldn't have said it better myself! Columbus has ever been shifting in the view of the American populace--Thomas Jefferson in particular (talking about the founding fathers) held Columbus in high regards. For them he was the "tragic" hero who never got recognition for "finding", "encountering", "discovering", "invading", or "inventing" America while he was alive.
The way I see it, the Founders just lost a teeny bit of credibility.

I applaud this channel in helping bring awareness to the actual history between colonists and indigenous people on this continent. No bias, just unabated facts, and the facts are damning for the colonials. which is why this history is not taught in public schools, thanks again for another fantastic entry!
*Try not to make us wait another 6 months to a year, but I’m really enjoying the style of animation.
History is talked about in public schools lmao. That’s such a tired line from people who want to portray the people who built and created America as evil.
They come when they come!
I do believe that Columbus holds great historical significance. Just like everybody else who traveled to the Americas during that time period. However, I think it's important to distinguish the actual history behind Colombus, and the myth and legends surrounding him. While at the same time, being fair and neutral to all points of view. People seem to think that history tends to be misconstrued to fit a certain, "pro-western" worldview. When in actuality history is a lot more complicated than it actually is. Sure one could look at the past and see how Christopher Columbus was overly glorified. And now Christopher Columbus is seen as an inept sailor and navigator, who just got lucky and decided to enslave a whole group of people for his own gain. But in my opinion, history is not seen through a microscope. One needs to take into consideration the people, culture, and economic times of each time period. And how that specifically leads to controversial historical events. But that is just my two cents on the matter. If anything I appreciate your videos because I believe your content is truly nonpartisan. Which is honestly a breath of fresh hair compared to most other history channels on youtube. Also, I am by no means trying to start controversy what I just wrote is simply my own opinion. Anybody is free to disagree with it.
Very good point
This is one of the things I like about this channel. It presents different viewpoints from a neutral perspective, the correct way to present history.

It's fascinating to read about him by other contemporary authors, including those involved in his expeditions. There is a very consistent theme of admiration for his knowledge of sea travel but complete contempt for him otherwise as man for being an ass of a leader, routinely screwing colleagues out of pay or withdrawing from personnel fights, taking credit for others' work etc - and that's not to mention (or belittle) the horrific acts against humanity in the west.
Some of the things he did in the Carribbean were atrocious even for his time

I am very glad that Europe colonized the Americas. An amazing conquest on par with Genghis Khan or the Roman Empire. Except through the conquest of the Americas and cooperation with Europe and Asia humanity has reached technological and societal advancement never before seen. It could have been done without all that violence and cultural genocide.

Any attempt to characterize Columbus as a hero or a villain is pointless. He took a huge risk in an attempt to gain wealth and glory. It is amazing that he survived his first voyage. It was 15th century Europe for God sakes. Judging him by today's moral standards is idiotic.
While pointing to him as a Hero is pointless as his actions could never release of him of that, The "Risks" And Villainy Is majorly one sided, The risks of the time was less "Risks" and more "what can this offer to me in gold" And a part of the reason Spain had a monopoly over The America's itself was because the silk road Though with ottoman taxation was still not too bad, And naval technology couldn't offer a "Safer" And constitute Processing of income going around the America's Or Africa, By the end of the Spanish Anglo war People rightfully changed their minds and Sought elsewhere.

Well, either way William Wallace would so beat him in battle, army or not!

Hey Ahin!!! I miss you too!!
Who’s the mysterious man in the top hat at 1:24?
Some random businessman.
He's significant, and I think there's some over-correction going on with how he's portrayed these days, but he absolutely never should have been installed as a national hero. Even viewing him in the best possible light, that never made sense. In fact the US nearly changed its name to Columbia in honor of him, before the South American nation of Colombia did it. I wonder if they ever regret that choice. Columbus never set foot in Colombia nor the United States, although he did at least land in territory that used to belong to Colombia.
Wasn't an honor thing, people just called America, Columbia a long time ago as far ago as colonial times.
How does one “over-correct” the condemnation of an enslaver? Would you be able to tolerate being brutally enslaved for even a day?
@@katieakin9397 I believe that's relevant, and certainly part of why he wasn't a hero, but the push has been to re-cast him as the Great Satan who brought slavery and pestilence to the innocent Americas. He wasn't that. Slavery was widespread throughout the Americas before a single European ever set foot there. It existed on every continent at that time. And nobody in the world had a clue how the human immune system worked. Columbus furthermore expressed guilt over taking advantage of the native Americans, and concern over how vulnerable they were. Which is obviously not the same thing as actually doing anything to protect them, but he would have failed even if he tried. He had no power.
There are certain historical figures who you can say, had they never been born, great tragedies would have been avoided. But if Columbus had never been born, not a damn thing would have changed. People had already puzzled out that the world was round. Columbus was just the first of that era to get a successful expedition funded. Bristol, England had been sending expeditions a decade before Columbus succeeded, and quickly succeeded afterward. But no matter who showed up, the Americas were going to get exploited. The concept of basic human rights would require several more centuries for the Age of Enlightenment to begin and mature. Nothing short of a European meteor strike would have bought the Americas the extra 200+ years they needed for things to have a chance of turning out differently. Columbus was not an exceptional villain, he was simply a 15th century European. They had not yet evolved enough as a civilization to restrain themselves from doing what they did. And the Americans, even further behind, could not have protected themselves.
@@katieakin9397 I just know Red Cloud could've eaten Columbus for breakfast.

I'm glad Columbus existed. Without him or someone like him, America would have languished in the perpetual warfare that characterized the previous eons of hunter-gatherer society. Instead, it was replaced by something better to an incredible degree. One also wonders about the legitimacy of the tribes Europeans ultimately displaced: Was the land always theirs or had they taken it by murder?
It seems that to many of Columbus' critics, morality started in 1492, never blaming Indians for anything -- and certainly not with the same vehemence -- as they blame Columbus. And above all never stating the awful state of affairs that provided the backdrop when Europeans arrived on the scene, what they might in other areas call "context."
Not necessarily; Native Americans lived in megacities before the devastation brought by Columbus the Crude and his men.
