Octavian also led the operation to capture Egypt. Yes it was Agrippa who did the heavy lifting at the Battle of Actium and Antony saved him at the first battle of Philippi. @@Sulla-ps3jv Well i don't think so. Some Historians suggest that Marc Antony would have restored the republic if he had won. Eventually many bad emperors were the downfall of the roman empire. A republic is better at mitigating bad leadership.

I find it interesting how similar to Pharsalus, at Philippi the Republicans were in a more advantageous logistical and defensive position and could have defeated the Caesarians by starving them out, but both times overeager soldiers and officers from the Republican side itching for a fight pressured their commander to attack their foe, which resulted in a devastating defeat for the Republican forces and became a turning point in the war.
Amazing content and stellar presentation skills as always 👍. By the way, will there be a return to the Hannibal series at any point in the near future? Where we left off, if I remember right, was basically when the Romans were finally starting to get their footing in their defensive war against Hannibal and his army that was pillaging the Roman heartlands almost with impunity. The last two episodes showed the Romans being able to at least fight him off, but not attack him in a pitched battle. That's one of my favorite series on this channel.
Funny, had Antony not had an affair with a foreign ruler, he would have won and become the master of Rome. The day he granted Cyprus to Cleopatra, his days were numbered.
I can’t believe the creators did not “heart” your comment. Interesting possibility for Antony that needs an alternative history video made on the topic. I’m interested in any contemporary, non Octavian aligned, Romans mentioning this incident. I wonder how many of his own troops were against his gifting of land to the Greek Egyptian Cleopatra. Thanks for bringing this up!
@@nathanallen1111 Never would have happened even without the affair Antony would have lost as Octavian was far better suited to political wrangling than fighting. Brute Force VS Bread & Circuses. The latter always wins.
His days were numbered the moment he chose to treat Octavian like a child, to underestimate and humiliate him instead of quickly disposing of him. Octavian was a much better politician than Anthony could ever be and had a gift for seeing talent in others. In the end he didn't need to be a better general and soldier than Anthony, something for which Anthony despised him, he had Agrippa for that. Anthony didn't fail because he was a "simp", he failed because his skill, even in war, never matched his hubris.

I feel while it was never his forte he incompetence is exaggerated to an absurd extent (I am looking at you History Civiles) and when he was motivated like here he could perform well when needed. It's just that he was never comfortable with leading a battle and he needed someone who was like Agrippa who was a military genius to work that part of his career.
I tend to think Octavian was a very shrewd and capable politician but didn't have the same military acumen of his great uncle Caesar. He didn't have the same military experience as his great uncle and understood this was a shortcoming, hence he left Marcus Agrippa to deal with military matters for him.
As Brutus felt the sword he wielded rip into his guts, he saw the last vestiges of a dream called Republic blown away. At that moment, as tears filled his eyes and blood spurted from his lips, his mind heard a familiar voice say: "You too, kid?"
@@plzburnme3809 Speaking of Sulla, despite not being very historically accurate, I loved the way he was portrayed by Richard Harris in the 2002 miniseries "Julius Caesar". Unlike many movie tyrants, who commit atrocities with a specific motivation they genuinely believe in (like Caligula's "I am a God and I have the right to decide on your lives", or Nero's "Rome must burn so that art can be reborn"), Sulla's only motivation when killing is basically: "Meh. I am just a d*ck who loves to watch the World burn, you know?" It's impossible to not love a villain like that
"Et tu, Brute" wasn't an expression of grief at betrayal of a dear one. It was a curse. Brutus would die like Caesar, when a blade penetrated his guts. And it's hard not to wonder how things might have turned out, if the Roman leadership had been more open to meritocracy, instead of name-brand recognition {I'm looking at you, Cato & Metellus Scipio}.
