I live in CALIFORNIA. ;( But in order to comply with "no lead ammunition for hunting", I'm switching to depleted Uranium rounds. Because deer are jerks, thats why.

I do. I'm going to use some A-10 warthog 30mm depleted Uranium cannon rounds. The radiation from the rounds cooks the meat while taking the deer down (or vaporizing it). You kill two deer with one stone.

What i think about lead ammo is it shouldnt be a ban, but ammo makers need to figure out how to make cheap lead free ammo and slowly phase lead ammo out of production, but only if they can make lead free ammo at a equal or lower price then lead ammo. The difference is there is no law forcing it, just the companies taking responsibility and knowing lead is still a poison

How are these laws passed without research that proves this is a valid concern? I think its insane that when it comes to gun control its the only area where you don't need to know jack shit about firearms to make these insane laws. If you tried to regulate the medical industry with anything less than an MD + FACS + Handful of PhD's you'd be laughed out the room. Why is gun control the only topic where its ok to be completely ignorant of the facts? I'm not even trying to be rhetorical right now.

+nateo200 The first lead in gun ammo studies where done in the 1950's. The research has shown the water fowl ammo ban has saved tens of millions off ducks and made it safe to eat them. Anyone who loves hunting should support nolead hunting. The US military is going to green ammo, why? Because troops working on outdoor ranges have been showing up with high lead levels. Don't believe me? How about FoxNews? www.foxnews.com/us/2013/12/21/end-line-for-lead-bullet-regulations-bans-force-switch-to-green-ammo.html

The ban on lead for waterfowl made sense. I've actually worked cleaning up lead from an estuary. Each bucket was a pound of lead (average).
That's got nothing to do with putting one round into a deer or a pig.
A lead ban on 22 lr? That means inhumane hits on jack rabbits. Period. That's what it means.
      Inhumane hits that cause suffering.

    • @jameswalt6514
      @jameswalt6514 7 років тому +1

BTW - There are multiple EXCELLENT lead-free options for my 45-70 that I have used for pig, and while they're expensive they are really not any more expensive than "hunt" lead ammo.
They should have excluded rimfire, though. The technology isn't there.

In case someone hasn't answered you yet. You are correct in your last thought, FMJ is just as the last word states a jacket of metal that surrounds a different metal. The jacket being the brass or copper or whatever material is used and the interior metal being lead. It's cost effective, adds weight easily and is soft leading to changing shape as in hollow points for damage effect.

You kinda have to ask yourself this, If you knew there was a double barrel 12 gauge pointing at you on the other side of a door, would you kick it in? Mass shootings are not happening at police stations they are happening in gun free zones like schools and airports where there are less chances of retaliation. In San Antonio a shooting began at a movie theater, it was ended with one bullet by someone with a concealed weapons permit before anyone was hurt.

  • @tkiesprod5508

The reason for the lead ammo ban for hunting is not about lead poisoning in humans. The reason for the ban is actually the California Condor. I was surprised when I learned (while visiting Zion National Park in Utah) that the reason that condors are nearly extinct is that they are highly susceptible to lead poisoning due to consuming lead bullets in carrion. While California is a terrible state for gun ownership, this issue is less about gun control, and more about conservation. Note that the ban is for hunting only. Buying and possessing lead rounds is still legal. Lead rounds for plinking and home defense- still legal and available. I am a gun owner and hunter. As an outdoorsman, I recognize that there is a covenant of stewardship with Mother Nature. In exchange for the bounty that we take from the land, we must protect and preserve the land and wildlife. "Leave it better than you found it." While among 2nd amendment activists there might be a tendency towards a knee-jerk reaction against this legislation, those who it actually effects (hunters) should take their roles as stewards seriously and be among the first to consider the validity of the concern that this law addresses. It would certainly be a shame for the Condor to go extinct as a result of lead left in the field by hunters during our watch.

Your lack of punctuation makes it difficult to know exactly what you are saying.) Do something positive.

Many CA gun owners did everything they could to stop all the bills, but ultimately the word didnt necessarily get out very far. Lots of folks didnt even know these bills existed. So it's already been enough for the citizens of California. As far as the mag thing goes the theory was that the rebuild kits were for pre-ban (2000) mags in the state

  • @Fermifire

The reason lead bullets were banned in Cali was because the California Condor was suffering from lead poisoning and the fact that a bunch of water supplies were being tainted by leftover lead bullets out in the boonies. I don't mind so much this ban as long I am allowed to use other alloys. As a gun owner, I do care about the environment.

The laws have nothing to do with "anti-gunners" or impeding upon 2nd amendment rights. This has to do with wildlife health and saving species that are easily susceptible to lead poisoning. Humans are exposed to this lead and can be harmful in the long-term, but it's mostly for the health of CA's ecosystems. The CA Condor will never have a true recovery because lead poisoning still continues to endanger them. It's worth a small, perhaps inconvenient change to make a lasting impact for future hunters and CA residents. We all need these animal scavengers to be around forever!

The bullet is usually in the animal when you take it home. We keep a jar full. This law is pointless, and actually bad for hunting because of lead bullets mass and therefor energy, only way to increase energy is to add velocity, which increases the chance of the round passing through without being some specialty ammo. Which means the animal is more likely to survive and now you have to chase it down.
I agree with steel shot for bird hunting because that lead ends up usually right in the water peppered by a shotgun. But for single shot hunting, this law is pointless.

Yes but it is in a different chemical configuration. Like this analogy = H2O compared to H2 gas
      and O2.
You can breath oxygen and and can't breath water.
Water doesn't explode in the presence of air H2 molecules do.
Chemistry has weird combinations of elements that can range from harmful to benign. I am using my head thats why I don't want lead in high concentrations anywhere (maybe with the exception of North Korea). No I am not a hipster just a casual drinker.

F.Y. I.: There are basically three reasons that caused a partial reversal of the lead-ban some states of Germany: 1)lead-free bullets seemingly rather tend to ricochet, exposing others to high risk (important esp. in driven-hunts) 2.)There tends to be increase pressure in barrel and system when shooting these cartridges which are potentially dangerous. 3.)on the other hand, the energy these bullets hit with can be quite low. If I find something on the cases in English, I'll post the links here.

The ammunition ban is associated with the decline of the California Condor. The idea is that a lead bullet enters and goes to hell inside of the animal. That gut pile is left in the field and the Condor eats the pile. This leads to an assumed lead poisoning. You can still hunt small game such as cottontail and tree squirrel & most all upland game with lead ammunition despite being in the current banned lead zone. Impressions are that small game are collected and taken home

  • @Ranger01
    @Ranger01 11 років тому

...Continued. Non-Tox solid (non-frangible) ammunition is also usually a harder (but still heavy weight) material such as steel, brass, or hardened copper. These materials, while not a problem in a smooth-bore firearm such as a shotgun, have inherent problems when encountering a rifled bore. The projectile does not allow rifling to properly cut into the projectile, and in fact can wear down rifling at a rate many times greater than even steel-jacketed lead ammunition does.

In Canada, the government banned lead shot for duck hunting. I dutifully used steel shot for duck hunting. I had more injured ducks falling out of the sky and drowning themselves in the marsh, than I ever did with lead shot. Even when I was able to get off a second shot at 20 feet on the duck in the water to finish it off, the steel shot was ineffective. I could see the shot impacting the water with a 2 foot spread. I switched to #4 Upland Game Load, which is still lead. All the subsequent ducks fell from the sky dead.

one of the contributing factors is also the fact that you have hunters that are bad shot/trackers that will shot an animal and not put it down right away and lose said animal and then it dies of its wound and them the California condor comes in and eats said animal and it kills the condor and we cant have that.

If you're interested in the basic story of how environmentally friendly ammunition("Miljøammunisjon") worked out for the Norwegian army, I suppose you could have a look at Wikipedia's entry with that name and run it through some translator. The article has links to various Norwegian newspapers as well. The ammo is currently banned for the HK416, which is the standard rifle used by the Norwegian army and this effectively is a complete ban of such rounds.

Most articles claim that the ban was put into place to protect animals, specifically the California Condor which eats the “gut piles” left by hunters and become poisoned. final version of the legislation protects hunters by allowing the ban to be lifted if the federal government decides to prohibit hunters from using non-lead ammo.

Barnes, Hornady, Nosler and Federal (probably others) all make copper or gilding metal hunting bullets. They are constructed in such a way that they expand upon impact but shed only a small percentage - 1 to 5 percent - of mass. They all, as well as other manufacturers who use their bullets, make non-lead ammunition.

"Under their thumb" is a good way to describe how us gun folks in California feel about our state's crazy politics. If you're not from here you probably don't realize how many folks are pro gun and hunting in this state (our ranges are packed on the weekends), but unfortunately we get overwhelmed by a liberal majority that elect politicians that try to legislate out everything they consider evil.

Willow Springs, Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, Fontana, Pamona. I can't leave.

Here is some basic ecology for you. Hunters shoot lead ammunition while hunting. Years go by, lead from missed shots builds up in the environment. As this lead is building up, rain, snow, etc. are leaching the lead into the environment from the bullets. This lead is taken up by plants and then taken up by the animals that eat the plants and the shift of tropic level causes the levels of lead to build up in the animals that eat the plants. (cont)

Not taking sides, but some additional points to ponder: 1)Several years ago, environmentalists tried to ban lead bullets due to high levels of lead contamination of surface & groundwater runoff, particularly from military installations. It's just a matter of time before the EPA starts to monitor firing ranges. 2) A politician's vote may be different tomorrow, than what it was last week. 3) Those few jobs & little bits of money don't mean squat to these people, just look what they've done to Coal

Anyone remember what happened after California passed the CARB and decreed that gas cans used in California must meet a certain standard? ALL manufacturers of gas cans stopped making the beloved 5 gallon Jerry Jugs that took the nice, easy to use fuel spout and started making CARB complient gas cans just so they wouldn't have to have a special production line JUST for California. Now that California has banned lead in hunting ammo, I see the manufacturers doing the same thing with ammo that they did with gas cans.

The problem is that assuming that these laws had "good intentions" behind them, they are often drafted by urban politicians who are absolutely clueless about firearms or wildlife management. We have this problem where I live, gun ownership is frowned upon, and hunting almost as much, so there is an overpopulation of deer, and seals. The dear are constantly getting hit by cars, and attracting predators like cougars and bears, and the seals are endangering fish stocks.

The issue is that it does basically ban all ammunition for hunting. Any non-lead ammunition is expensive. Eventually someone will be target shooting without a backstop and accidentally hit an animal. Once that happens they will attempt to ban lead ammunition entirely.

Removing lead from electronics is one of the many reasons why a brand new TV doesn't last anymore then five years and ends up in the dump thanks to cracked solder joints. Even time that happens a new TV has to be made using more rare earths, energy, and other resources, so how is that a "Positive" trend? In spite of what many think the reason lead was removed from gasoline is because it fouls catalytic convertors, but it is still used in aviation fuel because they need very high octane gas.

What I'm saying is the light round needs that extra velocity to achieve deep penetration as it does not carry as much kinetic energy. A by product of its light weight. Try throwing a ping pong ball at the wall then fill it with water and repeat, see which achieves penetration. If you accelerate the empty ball enough, you can achieve the same depth it just takes more velocity to get the job done. Velocity x mass = energy.

Im glad someone got my drift :) There has been a world wide (ahem developed world) drop in violent crime since the peak in the 80s early 90s. The thing to note is that the US enjoyed leading that drop in crime despite leading the world in gun ownership, the UK saw some changes but considering the sweeping gun bans they never saw the promised results as the ban only really effected people who never intended to shoot any one.

The whole idea behind parts kits is that they are supposed to be used to repair old magazines that were owned before the ban was in place. The ban allowed people to hold on to their mags, it just banned the sale, transfer, importation and manufacture of mags capable of holding more than ten rounds. So yes it's a stupid law but the mag kits do have a logical intended purpose.

  • @Gnomefro

This is probably just a phase caused by environmental activism. The Norwegian military stopped using lead ammunition a few years back and ironically, they reintroduced it a few years later because the troops practicing the most started reporting health issues after the switch.
For hunting big game, the health issues associated with fragmentation of lead bullets have been handled by laws regulating how much meat has to be cut away from the bullet channel if the meat is to be sold in stores.

The reason for this is because the highly endangered California condor could eat the meat with a lead bullet in it and when it lays its eggs the shells become thin and when the condor would sit on the eggs the eggs would crack and kill the bird and would eventually kill off the rest of the condors

In Europe we have the same thing right now.
But actually from a scientific standpoint the situation is the following:
    1) Birdshot at waterfowl -> very bad (poisoned ducks), steel slightly less effective
    2) Birdshot at rabbits -> bad (poisoned top predators from wounded ones)
    3) Rifle-Bullets -> bad for you eating it (people eating game have on average a 10x higher lead exposure)
Given that alternatives to lead ammunition exist, I'd advocate banning it, even thou that means by-by for my shotguns

Your car seats and interior also get lead dust on it when you drive home, take this seriously if you have young kids or have them I your car or around you. The M24 shoots 7.62, and the Bradley IFV and M1A1 MBT both have 7.62 coax guns built off of M60's. Also, some tier 1 ops use the FN SCAR-H which shoots a 7.62 So to say the 240B is the ONLY gun that shoots a .308 is entirely untrue. I would also be surprised if some Nat. According to Gundata.org a 45 ACP Aguila 230 gr. FMJ fired from a gun zeroed at 10 yds at a muzzle velocity of 830 fps will have 20.1" of drop, a velocity of 749 FPS, and 286 ft/lbs of energy @ 100 yds. I don't care how hard you try you can't make a 230 gr. match a 165 gr. for velocity in the same gun. Even with +P ammo. In terms of distance (not time) a 230 will drop an inch before a 165 will. Right or wrong this is how most people interpret external ballistics.
