Hands down to my favourite theme from the Sonic & Knuckles portion of S3&K. Though this theme was composed mainly in A-minor, it manages not to sound downright depressing/menacing. At 1:53, I am "grateful" that the final version of this theme ended up with this powerful bass with tons of coloration, unlike the prototype one, which sounded relatively weak. Yes it was a common technique in chip music, Konami, Capcom and Sunsoft used a lot this technique on NES and Genesis to give more substance to their main instruments.
I believe it's called a chorus effect, because it makes it sound like it's a group of instruments, or a chorus of instruments (hence the name, "chorus"). Another thing you can do is slightly pitch the copies up and down to achieve a phasing effect. As somebody who works with relatively simple music interfaces (MIDI, specifically with the tools built into Windows for MIDI, a lot of old-school music composition on Defle-Mask, FamiTracker, and a few others), you learn to cheat the limitations by using tricks to make the music sound much more in-depth. One thing I do a lot is "echo" (really just play the note again a 3/4 beat later with lessened volume, usually 50%-70%) because it adds so much more depth when you can't just slap a reverb effect on there. (note: I am not formally educated in audio engineering, I just know a thing or two because I've seen a thing or two and have been wasting my life on music since like 2011, as well as written over 200 tracks)
