Ghostwritr, the mastermind behind the fire collab between an AI-generated Drake and The Weeknd, is just one example of how this technology is making waves and raking in the cash.
But it doesn’t stop there. The rap scene is blowing up with AI-generated versions of iconic artists, both living and deceased, spitting bars like never before.
Take the unknown rap group who wrote verses for Jay-Z, only to use AI to bring them to life, or the mind-blowing AI-driven “N*ggas In Paris” remix ‘performed’ completely by Biggie and 2Pac, with B.I.G. helming Jay-Z’s verses and 2Pac coming in to do Kanye’s bars.
With AI already reshaping the rap landscape, you might be asking yourself: should I give up on learning how to rap? Or, as a fan, should I even be checking for new artists trying to make their way in music?
Surprisingly, the answer to whether you should give up on learning how to rap is definitely “no”. However, the reasons behind that answer might be a bit disappointing.
First, in the short term (think the next few years)…
The skill of writing songs and programming them into AI will remain extremely valuable.
Even if we reach a point where AI ghostwriters are crafting new albums for past legends like 2Pac, there will still be a need for individuals who can write rap with the right tempo, flow, and style.
Imagine a world where Big Pun adopts a Migos flow or Biggie spits rhymes with an Eminem-like cadence.
Such AI-produced collaborations are not too far off, with the technology potentially reaching this level of sophistication within the next six months to a year.
So, we gave the you GOOD news and the window of opportunity you have as a newer artist in the next year or two.
    Unfortunately, there’s bad news too.
While it’s true that learning to rap is still worth your time, on the flip side of our previous comment, the reality is that AI technology will make it increasingly difficult for new acts to break through.
Today’s music listeners are different from those of the past, with a plethora of entertainment options vying for their attention. As a result, it’s a much bigger ask for them to explore a new voice or style when AI can simply generate fresh content from their favorite artists, both living and dead.
As listeners become more and more accustomed to AI-generated tracks featuring their favorite artists, both past and present, they may be less inclined to take a chance on a new voice or style.
I was talking to a friend the other day about how amazing it would be to hear a 1999-era Eminem ‘release’ a new album, produced exactly as a 1999 Dr. Dre would have produced, all in pitch-perfect delivery, rhyme, and flow choices the respective artists would have chosen in that era.
With AI’s ability to faithfully reproduced the creative output of artists like that, when that AI “Slim Shady LP 2” comes out, it will be EXTREMELY different for a new artist to convince someone to pay attention to an unsigned new rapper than simply for the fan to check out the AI “Slim Shady LP 2”.
This phenomenon isn’t limited to just rap; it’s likely to impact all genres of music. Picture a world where AI can produce a seamless collaboration between a young, Thriller-era Michael Jackson and Bruno Mars or have John Lennon cover a John Mayer hit. With such enticing possibilities at their fingertips, listeners may find it difficult to justify exploring new artists.

The best you can do is adapt. Learn to use the new technology to your advantage. Learn these new tech tools like Chat GPT and use them as inspiration and help for song writing, producing etc.
If it's something that AI will never replace is that it will never truly be human. A large group of people will always search for music made by people. An AI talking about the struggle of poverty won't ever connect with people, even if it's a rap legend because it wasn't truly made by them.
In that was AI music as good as it gets will have a sense of falsehood to it.
That's where artists like you and I come in.

There will be time when people will start to respect natural music and this fake garbage goes away, I hope artists will take lawsuits against people that use their voice to make fake music, I think it ruins everything. Sure it can and will sound cool when you can literally make any type of music with any type of artist and just mix it all up but I don't think it will turn out good at the end, deceased rappers will have music released they didn't even want to be out and I think it's disrespectful.

I think this AI will turn the tables towards the producers over the artists. Making the voice another instrument at their disposal. I could see it becoming overwhelming to people not knowing what’s real, turning more towards live performances and more natural sounds. As a software engineer working on AI this is very interesting

In music fans connect to artists (real people) not robots-- at least that's how it should be imo.
