I've joked about the debate between tobacco and marijuana is if the US government bans tobacco and legalize marijuana you'll see drug smugglers get caught trying to smuggle tobacco across the US southern border. Marijuana does have some medical benefits, and should be looked into.

Yeah, it's weird. Seems like smoking tobacco products was a thing/fad for the older Gen X, Boomer, and Silent Gen folks. I'm mid-Gen X (b: 1973) and I don't recall anybody in my class ever smoking cigarettes. Maybe a couple, or three, but it just wasn't a big thing. My junior college 5 miles east of town used to be like "High School with ashtrays" as I used to call it back in the 80s, but once I got there in the early 90s ('91-'93) they had already enacted the ban on smoking in public buildings, so it was already on its way out.

The United States actually had a far better national public transportation network back in the 1800's.
There were rails that ran the entire length and made stops in every town and city, big or small, this was because the trains used steam
and would have to stop and fill up their water tanks.
Other times coaches were actually multi coaches, and was a combination of moving gold and silver coins as well as gold and silver dust, and passengers, just as trains.
This is how Wells Fargo came about, as they were running more people to the west, than precious metals, now they run mostly armoured vehicles to and from banks, as well
    as their own banking chain.
Most of these towns/cities were built along the railways for the ability to have access and use.
After the development of the motor vehicle, the coaches developed into other modes such as the Continental, and Grey Hound bus, and their stations.
Eventually as personal vehicles became more affordable, the use of long trip public transportation has narrowed down available routes.
Where once a small town had access to national travel using a bus, it is now nearly obsolete, most national long distance is by flight.
Actually the U.S. way of taxing goods and services is better than the VAT tax.
This is because of the wide U.S. geography, it helps small towns, and counties to generate revenues to help the local area without having to depend on the state Capital legislatures
to allocate state sales taxes to a particular locality.
Everyone pretty much knows the larger the city the bigger their proportion of state tax revenues they obtain, for infrastructure, schools, etc.
So a local tax is wise to help benefit local economy, and the needs of the public, in our area it helps in regards to running "The meals on wheels" program which helps
to feed low income peoples, or the retired elderly that can no longer work, thus unable to, but must choose between their medication, heating, or food, due to high inflation, like it is currently
    under Obiden economics.
We have an excise tax on prepared foods as an example, monies from revenues actually lower the tax liabilities of homes, of course sadly the way the payout is structured it does help those who can afford to pay taxes, more so than those who can only afford a smaller home.
Example a Home valued at $300,000.00 USD the first $50,000.00 home value is not assessed in the tax levy (mill rate) of a home.
But if someone owns a home that is valued at or below $50,000.00 they don't get any reduction in taxes.
One thing that does irritate me is the fact the excise tax is also used to place a cap on sales taxes on cars, of no more than $500.00.
So a person that can only afford to buy a $10,000.00 vehicle pays $500.00 in taxes, while a person that buys a $75,000.00 vehicle is capped with paying a tax of $500.00.
Let's do a little math and show who is actually benefitting.
The person buying a $10,000.00 vehicle would have to pay $750.00 (a reduction of $250.00 in sales taxes).
The other buying a $75,000.00 vehicle would have to pay $5,625.00 in taxes ( a reduction of $5,125.00 in sales taxes).
Yet is one considered that those who can afford to buy a $75,000.00 vehicle paid the full amount of $5,625.00, then the over all tax mill rate of the property tax would drop, as it would offset
the cost of excise tax use.
Granted the yearly property tax on a $75,000.00 vehicle would be significantly higher than that of the $10,000 vehicle sale price, those who can afford less are more disposed of being made to suffer than those that can afford a higher purchase price.
Especially if one considers the $10,000.00 vehicle has 144,000 miles, with no existing warranty, and the $75,000.00 vehicle has 5 miles, and a 5 year warranty, the odds of the $10,000.00 vehicle owner bearing an expensive out of pocket cost from repairs are far higher.
The tax mill rates do not consider disposable income when indexing S.C. vehicle property tax.
There is an old saying, "One can't draw blood from a turnip, but the government can".
They always seem to find a way to take things that are working fine, and either overcomplicate, or break it. This is so that government workers can get a paycheck.
Basically government workers do not contribute to the local or national GDP, because they don't actually produce anything, what they do is take it from those that do contribute, and redistribute to fund their preferences.

VAT tax is higher than the US sales tax (generally 4-10% of sales price depending on the city, county or state you're in). However, in Europe, VAT tax is hidden in the price making the cost of some items like meals much higher than in the states.

Personal space issue. It’s not about “shaking hands” and such. Is more like when you’re standing in a line, you keep 3-4 feet between you and the next person. Anything less makes people feel uncomfortable and crowded. Sometimes it’s unavoidable, like in the subway and crowds at venues…,,but when there is a choice, leave some space. I think Northern Europe and Brits are the same. Southern Europe, Asia, India, Africa…I see pictures of people standing in lines so close together that they are touching one another. Americans would freak at that.

Very funny response. Marijuana is mood-altering herb. Makes one happy (but slow), then eat anything that does not move faster than you do, then naptime. Tobacco has thousands of carcinogenic additives. That is why they were called 'cancer sticks'. I know not an issue for the 2 of you, but in many eateries with a liquor license they card everybody. Some years back, I went to dinner with friends--I was in my 50s--the server carded me. I thanked him for the compliment and we all burst out laughing. You are right we do talk all the time about politics--on all levels. It is just it usually becomes combative in recent years. There was a time we could respectfully disagree. The presenter did not share that the portion sizes here in the States are HUGE. Not just the no-cost add ons--it is the sizes of the meals and the drinks. Prepare to put on weight--especially if you visit the south. Love day drives--the man is right--a 3 hr 1 way drive is nothing. During fall, I will go leaf-peeping and drive for hours admiring the fall colors, find a local place for lunch, then drive home. I consider that a lovely Sat. I am always amazed when visitors are intimidated by lengthy drives. Yes, we are very loyal to our cars/trucks.

1:24 Even with people we know, yes shaking hands, maybe standing close together if absolutely necessary, but generally an arms length away is the normal distance between people. I personally get uncomfortable standing in line.
3:47 yes, most of us try to drive as far as we can before stopping. I have driven "home" to my parents house which is a 4 hour drive, one way . Once I did it home and back for a funeral. This is a normal thing for us because the US is big so going anywhere takes time.
4:27 VAT and sales tax are the same, it's just that ours isn't added in where VAT is. The reason is that the suppliers don't want the hassle of putting tax into the price.
6:51 tipping for food :tipping is for service. I ordered food to go last night, the restaurant tried to add a tip. I had to put in 0.00 to take out the tip. You don't have to tip if you are not sitting down and someone isn't bringing you everything.
10:33 Young people can look older, and older people can look young. You need to bring an ID, the cashier can be fired if they break the rule. Drinking age is 21 because teens would drink, drive and die in crashes. Driving is necessary in certain areas, so it became a big problem.
12:45 politics is common here, but it becomes a fight between people to quickly, so it's common to not bring it up
15:04 culture : there is a perception that we don't have culture because the US is a "new" country.
17:55 pay attention to what hospital they are taking you to there are different kinds. "for profit" and "not for profit" - ask for bill assistance, don't be meek. Tell them you are on vacation and don't have American insurance. It might be called " reduced cost of care or financial assistance."

Even among friends, politics can turn a night out on the town into a bad experience if you disagree with each other. If you do agree though, then it can be actually enjoyable and a bonding moment.

I found it interesting that you 2 had the conversation about which is worse for your health, cigarettes or marijuana; I still remember hearing something in high school between 2 complete strangers: I was next door at the gas station, waiting for my mom to pick me up (I went there every other day after school to get a fountain drink, a pack of gum, & sometimes a couple of granola bars); one day I heard these women talking about the dangers of smoking & 1 of them said that she knew someone who had died of lung cancer - AND SHE NEVER SMOKED! It was caused by all of the second-hand smoke she'd been exposed to for years! Also, my dad & aunt were both smokers; my dad had a heart attack when I was 15-going-on-16 (lived; never touched another cigarette) & my aunt had 2 different strokes late in life, the 2nd of which left her homebound. Now, I'm 420 friendly, but I'm also on some prescriptions that don't mix well with pot, so I do have to agree with the brother in white: if you insist on smoking any, please do it away from me.

Some folks make the mistake in thinking there are 52 U.S. states, 50 continental, & then Alaska, and Hawaii.
But there are 48 Continental, and then Alaska and Hawaii.
However some also make the mistake by including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, which are among 5 protectant territories.
But why wouldn't folks assume that a location called "U.S. Virgin Islands" wouldn't be considered as a state?
What happens is the folks of the 5 territories voted to be under the U.S. protection, but pretty much have voted to keep their independence.
I have no beef with either choice made, so as long as the choice is made of it's peoples.
The other three protected territories are Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands in the North Pacific Ocean, and American Samoa in the South Pacific Ocean.

Every town in the US has its own tax rates.
Manufacturers often print the price of their products right on the package.
Printing the full price, including local sales tax for all the different tax jurisdictions would be very expensive as each manufacturer would need to design and print thousands of different packages for each product.
By printing only one package, companies like Walmart can buy huge quantities cheaper, and distribute them based on expected sales per store without worrying about mispriced items causing confusion.

Fun fact: The United States of America isn't just comprised of states, it also has territories.
Wikipedia - The United States has control over fourteen territories. Five of them (American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) have a permanent, nonmilitary population, while nine of them (the United States Minor Outlying Islands) do not. With the exception of Navassa Island, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, which are located in the Caribbean, all territories are located in the Pacific Ocean. One territory, Palmyra Atoll, is considered to be incorporated, meaning the full body of the Constitution has been applied to it; the other territories are unincorporated, meaning the Constitution does not fully apply to them. Ten territories (the Minor Outlying Islands and American Samoa) are considered to be unorganized, meaning they have not had an organic act enacted by Congress; the four other territories are organized, meaning an organic act has been enacted by Congress. The five inhabited territories each have limited autonomy in addition to having territorial legislatures and governors, but residents cannot vote in federal elections, although all are represented by non-voting delegates in the House.
but even a fuck ton of Americans citizens themselves don't even know this information because they think Puerto Rico is a completely different country and always gives them a lot shit around election time when Puerto Rico asks for stuff because they think Puerto Rico isn't a part of the United States. That's how shitty the American educational system is.

Hey guys, I was very impressed with all the extra knowledge you guys have about certain stuff. You're two pretty smart and intelligent dudes. Props to you both. But yeah, about the 50 stares thing, a lot of foreigners get confused, because they assume that the Lower continuous states, or as we call them, the Lower 48, are actually 50 in count, right? No, there's just 48 in the mainland, with Hawaii and Alaska being the last 2 for a total of 50. The US flag prior to those two being added had a square field of 6 rows of 8 stars each. Then when Hawaii and Alaska were added in 1949 and 1950, they changed the field to alternating rows of 6 stars and 5 stars each. 5 rows of 6 stars (30 total) plus 4 rows of 5 stars (20 total) = 50 stars all together.

Tobacco smoking has been a dying fad for the last 25 years or so. Ever since they outlawed smoking in public buildings (which was a good thing, imo) more and more people just quit smoking. The way I look at it, it was a popular fad among older Gen X and Boomers. I'm mid-Gen X and I couldn't tell you if any in my Class smoked regular tobacco. But older kids and adults did at the time. Unfortunately, Marijuana (Pot) has replaced tobacco cigarettes. But like others said, Pot does have some medicinal properties so it's not all bad, I guess. I made the mistake recently of consuming some 25mg Pot candy and they fucked me up. Got my head spinning so bad, I couldn't stand up.
