D718 is a triple diffused epitaxial silicon NPN power transistor with a load of about 80 Watts. oh and i learned about this stuff in the late 1980's when i was a component level service tech on scientific test equipment.
The transformer's leakage inductance can destroy the transistors if they are not protected. This oscilloscope may be too poor to show the voltage spikes which can be very large and fast....
