I wouldn't say the friendship between John and Al just adds something to the movie. I'd say it's the heart of the film. They're two men broken in the opposite ways, who are able to help each other heal without even meeting face to face. John has complete faith in his profession, being dedicated to his backlog of cases and job back in New York, and willing to do his job in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds at the Christmas party. His personal life, on the other hand, is a complete disaster, his marriage ruined, his children taken from him, and his faith in his ability to be a husband and father severely shaken. Al is the opposite: a man whose faith in his profession has been destroyed, to the point where he is incapable of pulling his gun and so works what he obviously regards as a meaningless job, jockeying papers across a desk because he can't bring himself to go back on the street. His personal life, however, is going very well. He's obviously happily married, and eagerly anticipating being a father for the first time. Through Al, John is able to give voice to his fears and mistakes, confronting them, and realizing what he needs to do to repair his relationship with his wife. Through John, Al is able to see the value of his profession, and to find courage and meaning once again.

Great reaction, guys. And YES, Die Hard is a Christmas movie. The Christmas Hip Hop song Argyle was playing in the limo when he picked up John was Run DMC (not 'DNC'....lol) 'Christmas In Hollis' (as in Hollis, Queens, NY). And although it is indeed a Christmas movie with Christmas music, I have to also correct you on a mistake you made around the 24:59 minute mark when you said that they're even playing Christmas music when the bad guys got the vault open. That piece of classical music that played in that scene was Ludwig Van Beethoven's "Ode To Joy" (Symphony No, 9). It is one of my personal favorite pieces of music, but it is not a Christmas song. But that song was definitely appropriate for that particular scene, and it is one of those songs that can be used in ANY season. And talking about Beethoven's 'Ode To Joy', you should definitely check out the 1994 movie 'Immortal Beloeved' starring Gary Oldman as Beethoven. It is a GREAT movie...but it might be one that you may want to react to and post around Valentines season since it is a historical Love/Mystery movie. You gotta' react to' 'Immortal Beloved' (1994). 🙂🍺🍺🍺
Also speaking of Ode to Joy… the Tom Hanks/Shelley Long movie, The Money Pit, features the actor who played Karl in Die Hard (blonde baddie who comes back at the very end). In that film, he’s an orchestra conductor, and leads the orchestra in playing Ode to Joy at one point. 😊
Reginald Velljohnson(Al Powell) is also memorable in "Crocodile Dundee" and the TV series, "Family Matters." He actually played himself recently in "The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee."
Nice reaction. I've seen it many times. You'll notice more details and/or more things make sense. Like how did the bad guy, that was hanging by a chain, come back. He has his hand between his throat and the chain. Things like that. I feel bad you're watching it on a small screen (laptop?). If you get a small 4k TV and sit the same distance you are now it should give you a better viewing experience.
Congratulations again on your 10,000 subscribers, Ladies!!!🎊🎊🎈🎈🎉🎉I have a hard time between this one and "Diehard 2" (1990) being my favorite of the early Die Hard films. Both are excellent IMO. Great reactions to the original Die Hard, Michelle & Natalie!!!!🎄🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽I don't get people complaining about you laughing. That never occured to me. But then again, there was another reactor channel that people were complaining they cried too much. I guess you just can't please everyone. Merry Christmas, Michelle & Natalie!!!!🎅🏽🎅🏽🎄🎄❄❄🎁🎁
25:19 and there's your Christmas redemption story..well one of them. Powell's comes at the end. Lethal Weapon is another great Christmas action movie and the quintessential buddy cop movie.
Epoch making movie (thank you John McTiernan), and a veritable database of one liners. "I read about them in Time magazine..." / "Want a breath mint?" / "Now I know what a TV dinner feels like..." / "Just the fly in the ointment, Hans. The monkey in the wrench." / “Nine million terrorists in the world and I gotta kill one with feet smaller than my sister.” I've seen this probably 20 times and will revisit as the spirit moves me. Glad you liked it!
The big blonde guy you called Fabio is the great Alexander Godunov, a Russian-American ballet dancer who defected to America in 1979. He was once the premier dancer for the Bolshoi ballet alongside Mikhail Baryshnikov and other accomplished ballet performers. Check out the Tom Hanks comedy The Money Pit, he's hilarious in it.
Fun fact, the role of John McClane was first offered to Frank Sinatra. Die Hard is actually a sequel to a previous movie that Frank Sinatra made in the 1960s.
But it wasn't a serious offer they were just contractually obligated to give him the offer, with the technology now somebody should "deepfake" Frank Sinatra into Die Hard 😂😂
@@obsoletepoc7050 The Detective (1968),Die Hard is NOT a sequel to The Detective but the book Die Hard is based on Nothing Lasts Forever is a sequel to the book The Detective but the Films have nothing in common except they're based on books by the same author, the John McClain character is called Joseph LeLand in the books, It's his daughter not his wife in the book and she actually gets dragged out the window to her death in the novel
My Favorite Fun Fact about this movie: When Hans Gruber fell to his death, Alan Rickman (the guy playing Hans) was told that they would drop him on the count of "Three!". Without telling him, they dropped him on "One!" instead. The surprised look on Rickman's face looks authentic because he really was surprised. Also, don't worry about the people complaining that you laugh too much. This is a channel for YOUR reactions, not what someone else THINKS your reactions should be. If you think i's funny, laugh all you want. If someone has a problem with that, it's their problem. That way you are reacting, not acting.
fun facts , the actress who played holly is the auntie of the actor who played kevin in home alone . the look on allen rickman face when hans was dropped like a bad habit at the end of the movie was real fear in rickman's face , he was up high on a rig i think and the director told him they were going to drop him in the scene but when it came time to drop him the director didn't tell rickman he just said action so the look was ricman's real fear from the fall
Hans called him a cowboy, McLain responds with a cowboy phrase from Roy Rogers, the singing cowboy from the 1940s. Bruce Willis grew up watching Roy Rogers so that was incorporated into the character. Also why McLain called himself Roy on the radio.
A movie isn't a Christmas movie just because it takes place at Christmas time. You guys are the first reactors I've seen that didn't recognize Alan Rickman from Harry Potter. You touched on the everyman aspect of John McClane- the 80s were full of huge action heroes- Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Van Damme, etc, muscle-bound heroes who always know just what to do and never fail. I've read that the studio wanted someone more relatable for this movie- an average guy who finds himself in an impossible situation. Has faults and self-doubts, makes mistakes, a bit of a smart ass, but still likable. A great Christmas comedy to check out is Scrooged, with Bill Murray. Some other great 80s action movies worth checking out if you haven't seen them already are The Terminator, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Escape From New York, and Batman.
I just saw your reaction to this. I always thought it was a Christmas movie. I saw it when it was in the theater. Since I my friend and I only knew Bruce from the TV Show Moonlighting, we were like Bruce Willis an action hero...? He won us over at the end as you said he is relatable. The 2nd movie is nice too.
Not just a Christmas Movie, THE Christmas Movie. Bruce Willis was a TV actor before this, and an A-Lister after. It was made on the relative cheap and had a cast of relative unknowns. The most known quantity was Director John McTiernan, in his third turn behind the lens, who was coming off directing Predator and this cemented his status (though it was damaged by 1993's Last Action Hero). Yes, the song in the cab was Run DMC's classic, "Christmas in Hollis"
Absolutely a Christmas movie. I had a childhood friend named John McLaine, and, not kidding here, he was badass. Even though he was a good four inches shorter than I, you did not want to mess with him. On the subject of Christmas parties, let me just say that when the warehouse staff mixed with the office staff it was Katie bar the door. Thanks for reaction.
Of course it's a Christmas movie. It happens around Christmas, evil is defeated, a family is reunited, a man overcomes his psychological trauma. It's Christmas miracles all around.
I love how you both laughed all the way through this. I appreciate anyone who sees the funny side of movies in this genre. I laughed all the way through Terminator 2 in the cinema, and the friends I was with all thought I was nuts. This is the second reaction video of yours that I've watched today, and I'm looking forward to watching more. But what on earth did Beethoven do to the two of you, to have you calling his 9th Symphony "Christmas music"?
How DARE u ladies laugh, smile, & enjoy urselves watching this movie? What do u think this is, a "holiday" movie? Well.....OF COURSE it is? Glad u 2 had fun in this reaction! :D
Saw this movie in six grade down the street at my friends house in 1988 on VHS and I’ve loved it ever since I now own this and the sequel on Blu-ray. Saw Die Hard 2 in the theater when I was 13. Amazing movies ladies, but after 2 they go downhill, but you should watch Die Hard 2. If it helps ladies his friend is in the sequel. 🙂 definitely a Christmas movie and I will be watching both of them next week🎄
This was the first R-rated movie I ever saw. I was 9 years old and my cousin told me to watch it and I was hooked on 80s action movies ever since! It is totally a Christmas movie. It has a lot of Christmas themes. Not to mention they double down on "the Christmas movie feel" on the sequel. Your reactions are great, don't change. There are definitely funny parts in this movie. I love the SWAT team assault, I laugh every time at that scene. And not to mention the best office Christmas party ever; booze, blow and guns!
Keep in mind with John having the gun on the plane was not illegal, this was before 9/11. Airports were not as strict on gun policy on planes at this time. Therefore it was easier to carry a gun on a plane without checking it in 1988.
Bazooka is the common name for a man-portable recoilless anti-tank rocket launcher weapon, widely deployed by the United States Army, especially during World War II. Also referred to as the "stovepipe", the innovative bazooka was among the first generation of rocket-propelled anti-tank weapons used in infantry combat. Featuring a solid-propellant rocket for propulsion, it allowed for high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warheads to be delivered against armored vehicles, machine gun nests, and fortified bunkers at ranges beyond that of a standard thrown grenade or mine. The universally applied nickname arose from the M1 variant's vague resemblance to the musical instrument called a "bazooka" invented and popularized by 1930s American comedian Bob Burns.
indeed a christmas movie 1.Christmas music 2.Takes place on Christmas eve 3.Christmas decor 4.Christmas party 5.Christmas tree 6.Eggnog 7.Christmas present = the teddy bear with red ribbon 8.HO HO HO was said
its not Christmas until Hans goes out the window. "Under Siege" is Die Hard on a Battleship... Its a Christmas movie, Christmas is integral to the plot, no other holiday gets John on a plane to Holly's office party. Al has his redemption arc, Holly and John have a reconciliation. Also there is an important life lesson in all the mayhem. You See what can happen if your boss is too cheap to book a venue for the office party? This movie is great writing all around... The traveler's advice leads John to being barefoot, Holly's frustration over the phone call causes her to tip over the picture, protecting her from Hans later in the movie - a lot of little details in the setup of the plot paid off through out the movie...
The black actor has been in several movies as secondary actor. In TOPGUN was Goose replacement at first. Also was in Walker Texas Ranger. Also a main character in the LEFT BEHIND TRILOGY
Bad guy.. Alan richtman. In Harry Potter and tons of movies. His movies about a college professor, the making of California white wine, and about CBGB, are outstanding!
Yes, they did have cell phones in the '80s.... They were much bigger, and for to expensive for most people to have one back then though. If you want to see an example of one of those cellular "BRICK" phones, think of Zach Morris from "Saved By the Bell" with his '90's cell phone... not much different. All they did was make and receive calls, with no frills for probably 10 times the price we get with our much more capable modern phones. If I recall, they came out for public use in the '70s, mainly for the ones who could afford it. Many cell phones back then were considered "Car Phones" because they were too bulky to be conveniently carried around everywhere... Many called them that whether they were in a car or not... True car phones, however, had much lighter hand sets, because it was wired to the car, with the bulkier hardware installed into the car itself.
I rewatched this, last summer. I just fell in love with it! I was watching it a lot! A lot, a lot! LOL! One of the things that worked so well in this movie is John's vulnerability. He's an average guy, he's not looking to be a hero. He just wants his wife back. He's fighting for her! In so many ways, I look at Die Hard as a love story. So many people have the debate rather it's a Christmas movie or not. One of my friends said, it's not a Christmas movie because it doesn't center on Christmas. Yes, it takes place on Christmas Eve and they play Christmas music in the background. But still. It's a straight up action movie!
Flying from NYC to California, "John McClane" found this song: ua-cam.com/video/wYHleFFhlFk/v-deo.html Bruce Willis was lokked upon as "the TV guy" for te Rom-Com "Moonlighting." John McClane is a working class guy, isn't a "muscle-bound Rambo-type," has moments of fear/doubt/introspection, takes damage, and is "dead man walking" by the last quarter of the movie. It is no wonder that the audience sees themselves in John McClane.
Die Hard is one of my favorite action movies of all time. Bruce Willis not only became a star but an action star. My other Bruce Willis movie recommendations are Pulp Fiction, the very underrated Sci-Fi flick 12 Monkeys and Tears of the Sun. It's sad to recently hear the news about Bruce Willis health. Prayers go out to him and his family. 🙏
If memory serves, this was one of the first movies for both Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber here, Professor Snape in Harry Potter, Elliott Marston in Quigley Down Under, the Sheriff in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility, and many more). Bruce Willis (John McClane here, Butch Coolidge in Pulp Fiction, Dr. Ernest Menville in Death Becomes Her, Korben Dallas in The Fifth Element, and Malcolm Crowe in The Sixth Sense - just to mention a few). The Fifth Element is sometimes called "Die Hard in Space". Regrettably, Alan Rickman is dead now.
Hm, bottom line: It's Christmas time, the story of a man and his besties doing everything possible to get the BEST Christmas gift ever, despite maniacal obstacles..... following this formula, Hans is the hero and John is the Grinch Lol🤣🤣
I've heard the "shoot for the knees" line with respect to combat before. I think it is because experienced fighters tend to duck for cover very quickly, so multiple shots at chest level will be too high after the first couple shots. It is not generally recommended for pure self defense against one or two attackers for tactical and legal reasons.
Another great Alan RIckman (Hans) movie was "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves", with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman. All three of them stole the show, but Rickman, as the Sheriff of Nottingham, definitely got the best lines...
I dont think of Die Hard as a Christmas movie. I think of Christmas movies as being centered around family and Christmas. If Die Hard is a Christmas movie then so are movies like Lethal Weapon and The Godfather and any other movie that has a scene in it that took place during Christmas time.
I realize the debate on Die Hard being a Christmas movie. It not only takes place at the time of year, but the big point is the entire movie takes place at the company's Christmas party. Die Hard is one of the most copied plots ever, yes. Without naming each movie, we have seen Die Hard on a battleship, on a train, on a plane, at a hockey game, at an airport (oh wait that is Die Hard II)... anyway, very copied.
Great reaction overall, but I think it´s a bit better when the movie is a first time watch for both of you, so we can see Michelles surprised expressions too. 😎
Great reaction and great review as usual, guys. Loved it! For another great Bruce Willis action movie that combines action and humor, other than the other Die Hard movies, which are also great, have a look at 'The Last Boy Scout (1991)'. It, along with the Die Hard series, is probably my favorite Bruce Willis movie.
Regarding Alan Rickman - it's not likely you have seen him in any older thing before that film, Natalie. Die Hard was his big break into movies. Fun trivia - his original break was supposed to be Dangerous Liaisons, but Warner Bros picked John Malkovich instead. Reportedly, Malkovich's performance as Valmont was heavily... influenced by the way Rickman played that part for Royal Shakespeare Company since mid-80s.
Rickman always had amazing range. I think Dr Lazarus is my favorite overall depiction despite hanz and snape being "better performances". If you haven't done galaxy quest there's a freebie for ya
Officially titled the M9A1 Rocket Launcher, it was called bazooka after a crude horn of that name used by radio comedian Bob Burns. The bazooka was developed chiefly for attacking tanks and fortified positions at short range.
True. But that was not a bazooka. It was a recoilless rifle. Bazooka was a much smaller man portable device. You saw him bolt it to the floor. That was much larger crew served weapon. Another movie with a recoilless rifle is Black Hawk Down. One of the Somali Technicals has one bolted to the truck bed
1:25 If I remember correctly Die Hard's cinematographer directed Speed. 2:25 There are scenes in this movie that are meant to be laughed at. Some of the dialogue in particular was written with that intention in mind. So if you're not laughing you're probably not enjoying the movie. 4:40 It's Run DMC. 8:45 He's Professor Snape in the Harry Potter movies, and was in Galaxy Quest.
A classic film love Michael kamen’s score and Bruce Willis and Alan rickman were brilliant’s casting . This was Alan Rickman’s break out role in Hollywood and what a movie to do it in. Hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas love from the uk.

Edited a typo in the above comment.
Dundee."
Family Matters not Family Ties.
@@Tim_Raths Thanks. My memory isn't improving as I age. I will correct that.
Merry Christmas, Michelle & Natalie!!!!🎅🏽🎅🏽🎄🎄❄❄🎁🎁
i love part 2!
Never really cared for Die Hard 2:Die Harder, for me it's a toss up between Die Hard and Die Hard With A Vengeance and I pretend 4&5 don't exist
25:19 and there's your Christmas redemption story..well one of them. Powell's comes at the end.
Lethal Weapon is another great Christmas action movie and the quintessential buddy cop movie.
Love the movie reactions. Keep ‘em coming.
Merry Christmas. 🎄
Glad to see yall celebrating the holiday with an authentic Christmas movie
😁🎄
I was 24 Years old in 1988 when I saw Die Hard in the Movie Theatre! It was amazing and action packed!
He passed away in 1995...
Cellphones did exist in the 1980s just not everybody had them. The first cellphone hit the market in 1973 ,but those are "Walkie-Talkies".
Its a classic christmas movie
Fun fact, the role of John McClane was first offered to Frank Sinatra. Die Hard is actually a sequel to a previous movie that Frank Sinatra made in the 1960s.
Ohh what??! What's it called?
But it wasn't a serious offer they were just contractually obligated to give him the offer, with the technology now somebody should "deepfake" Frank Sinatra into Die Hard 😂😂
All that is in the Netflix Movies that made us
@@obsoletepoc7050 The Detective (1968),Die Hard is NOT a sequel to The Detective but the book Die Hard is based on Nothing Lasts Forever is a sequel to the book The Detective but the Films have nothing in common except they're based on books by the same author, the John McClain character is called Joseph LeLand in the books, It's his daughter not his wife in the book and she actually gets dragged out the window to her death in the novel

This is one of the best action movies I ever watched! And yes I consider Die Hard a Christmas movie.
Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁🎅🏻
Half of the bad guys look like they are regional sales managers for Ikea
😂😂
Christmas movie tip: If you watch “Die Hard” right after “Love Actually”, you can see Alan Rickman get punished for what he did to Emma Thompson.
I forgot he is in that!
Thank you!!
fun facts , the actress who played holly is the auntie of the actor who played kevin in home alone . the look on allen rickman face when hans was dropped like a bad habit at the end of the movie was real fear in rickman's face , he was up high on a rig i think and the director told him they were going to drop him in the scene but when it came time to drop him the director didn't tell rickman he just said action so the look was ricman's real fear from the fall
Clarence Gilyard(Theo the hacker), who died a couple of weeks ago, is probably best known for this and for the "Walker, Texas Ranger" TV series.

Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe and MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄
Of course it's a Christmas movie. It happens around Christmas, evil is defeated, a family is reunited, a man overcomes his psychological trauma. It's Christmas miracles all around.
Agreed!
Ahh classic. My hans Gruber impression is spot on lol. I Hope you both have a great Christmas and New year by the way. Happy holidays 👍

2:43 laughter happens,..-Ernie Moore Jr.
The "bazooka" is now the "RPG" (rocket propelled grenade).
So sad.
Another genius move...when bad guy falls from building, with airbag underneath him, director said, we will drop u on 3. He got dropped on 2!
I always watch this movie at Christmas
I've heard the "shoot for the knees" line with respect to combat before. I think it is because experienced fighters tend to duck for cover very quickly, so multiple shots at chest level will be too high after the first couple shots. It is not generally recommended for pure self defense against one or two attackers for tactical and legal reasons.
Live free or Die Hard is actually my favorite in the series. And yes, I think you should watch them all.
100 % the best christmas action movie of all time.
I saw this on the big screen myself,at age 8 in 1988. I agree it’s a Christmas movie despite it being 90 degrees outside at the time I saw it
Another great Alan RIckman (Hans) movie was "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves", with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman. All three of them stole the show, but Rickman, as the Sheriff of Nottingham, definitely got the best lines...
Great reaction you two...
You should do the sequel Die Hard 2: Die Harder...it is also a Christmas movie 😉🎄
Thank you Michael!!
I dont think of Die Hard as a Christmas movie. I think of Christmas movies as being centered around family and Christmas.
If Die Hard is a Christmas movie then so are movies like Lethal Weapon and The Godfather and any other movie that has a scene in it that took place during Christmas time.

Somebody was blind to switch to a brown/green shirt instead of white like before. ;P
Don't forget "Striking Distance." It has some plot similarity, although it isn't as localized.

It's a Christmas movie in the tradition of Rudolph. Ladies just be you. If you laugh you laugh.
Die hard and lethal weapon are christmas movies. Great movies to watch during the season.
The only thing more Christmas than Die Hard is saying Happy Birthday Jesus.
