great reactions and fun guesses thru this classic horror with great special effects, ladies. If im not being too personal Michelle , do I hear a slight southern accent ? TExas maybe? If you 2 ever get to watching some famous stars from 1950's & 60's please consider Hitchcock's Rear window with James stewart & lovely Grace Kelly , and North by northwest wth CAry Grant. Im sure u have seen PAul Newman, and he has some classics too like HUD ( takes place in Texas) and a fun western with ROB Redford called BUtch Cassidy & sundance kid.

The story was written by John W. Campbell, Jr. and was published in 1938 and was called Who Goes There?. The 1951 movie, The Thing from Another World, was very loosely based on the book. John Carpenter and his friends were very big fans of this movie. So when Carpenter was going to remake it he went back to the novella and followed that story closely. Sorry no Alien ties ladies. Great movie and ending.

@@ForceOfLightEntertainment Well "The Thing" 1982 was actually being written and conceptualized long before "Alien". Production began in the mid-seventies before Alien. It had its rough start changing hands until Carpenter got ahold of it. Did some info leak about the movies concept and what the source material was (Who Goes There?) who knows. But if you read the novella by John W. Campbell this movie follows it closely. To me the isolation and paranoia are the only concepts they both have in common other than an alien. The alien in "Alien" does not copy life forms anyway. Very different.

problem is Blair was making that ship from the end of the Dog autopsy. he did not dig that hole while in the shed, we see no snow piles inside the shed from it. He made the hole and the ship while the base Equipment was still working, not after everything was smashed. The generator would be the last part needed for power. Blairs knowledge of the dogs was based on him being the creature. Poor Norris thing failed to repair his heart, on making him. Lacking a pacemaker caused him to crash. The Blair thing tells us even after 100,000+ years, the creature still has the knowledge of the Engineer it took over in the Large ship.

The FX by Rob Bottin were state of the art for the time, and they're still very effective after all these years. When it was first released, The Thing was a critically reviled movie that bombed at the box office, I'm glad it's gotten its due after all these years. Still an effective movie about paranoia where you don't know who's who, what's what, and who you can or can't trust.

    * Kurt Russell threw a live stick of dynamite at the end of the film
    * The American and Norwegian bases were one and the same. They completed shots at the American base, torched it for the end sequence, then used the remains for the Norwegian shots.
    * Amazing special effects from Rob Bottin, who worked 18-hour days for a straight year (sometimes sleeping on set). When the production wrapped he had to check in to a hospital for dehydration and exhaustion

"I dunno what the hell's in there, but it's weird and pissed off, whatever it is."
Fun Fact: According to an apocryphal story first reported on Reddit in February 2013, when asked about the ambiguous ending of the film, John Carpenter responded that he never understood how could there be any confusion about whether Childs or MacReady are human or not, because the last scene shows: "Kurt Russell and Keith David staring each other down, harshly backlit. It's completely, glaringly obvious that Kurt Russell is breathing, and Keith David is not."
Budget Friendly Fact: The Norwegian camp scenes were actually the charred remains of the American site from the end of the film. Rather than go to the expense of building and burning down another camp, John Carpenter re-used the destroyed American camp.
Practical Effects Fact: The film is considered a benchmark in special make-up effects. The effects were created by Rob Bottin, who was only 22 when he started the project. To create the effect of the title, an animation cell with "The Thing" written on it was placed behind a smoke-filled fish tank which was covered with a plastic garbage bag. The bag was ignited, creating the effect of the title burning onto the screen.

The 50s movie "The Thing From Another World" was first, yes, but this movie follows the book a lot more closely.
It's like calling Man Of Steel a remake of Superman 2 from 1980.
Also, the original 50s movie, the creature was basically a man-in-costume and looked like a cross between Frankenstein and a vegetable.
There's been a recent revival in the book as well as there were some transcripts found in Campbell's old attic, that flesh the novella out into a more rounded full-on novel.
Apparently the studios are trying to get the new revised novel made into a new movie.

It’s based on a John W Campbell short story, “Who Goes There?” Howard Hawks did a ‘50’s version that isn’t as close to the source material but is still one of the best sci-fi flicks of the decade. Both are classics in their own right.

Imo, this smashes Alien. It's superior in almost every way, atmosphere, paranoia, tension, soundtrack, creature concept and design, special effects.
Acting is comparable, set pieces and photography are again pretty close. The Thing is not only the greatest horror and sci-fi creation, but one of the best movies ever in general.
There's a reason Alien has plenty of sequels and spin-offs, while directors and studios are scared to touch The Thing even with a twenty feet pole. It's too perfect.

This is an adaptation of the John W. Campbell's novel "Who goes there?". There was a first adaptation in 1947 cal "the thing from another world" which was one of the favorite movie of John Carpenter (in Halloween you can see the characters watch the film on TV). But the two films are very different.

Blair (Wilford Brimley) wasn't crazy when he smashed up the helicopter and the radio. He was the smartest one there. He knew that if the thing could leave the camp or get rescued in the form of a human, it would take over the world in two years. And you can hear him saying that no dog could make it on its own to temperate climes - which it why "that thing wants to be US!". By the way, Wilford Brimley was a trained Marine and professional bodyguard for Howard Hughes when he was younger. He might well have been able to take on all the other actors combined, even WITH diabetes!

The Thing is based on a 1938 novella where the plot is pretty much the same as the 1982 John Carpenter version. It is a shapeshifting alien that perfectly imitates other beings by absorbing them. It absorbs your memories too. In the novella, the team maintains radio communication, but lies that everything is fine so no rescue attempt is made since they understand the creature cannot reach civilization. That would be impossible to stop. The 1951 version is only similar in that a research team in the Arctic finds an alien craft, but the creature is much different as it wasn't possible in 1951. It's North Pole instead of South.
The story predates Alien by 41 years. The only intentional nod to Alien is their version of the chest-burst scene with Norris-Thing reacting to the defibrillator.
Also, the locks (to the blood samples and how Blair is isolated) mean nothing as the shapeshifter can alter its form to get through tight spaces, like under the door or into the keyhole. That's why neither Garry or Dr. Copper were the Thing, but the blood was tampered with. Nobody opened it.
And, the shadow was meant to be Palmer (the biker jacket guy), but Carpenter felt his shadow was too telling so he used the stunt coordinator, Dick Warlock. Warlock is lots of stuff as a stuntman and actor, including Blazing Saddles, Jaws, Escape From New York, Firestarter, Halloween II as Michael Myers, and Spaceballs (he's the guard who tells Lonestar how to do the Vulcan neck pinch).
Special makeup effects creator, Rob Bottin, started as an assistant to Rick Baker. He helped him on King Kong (1976), the cantina aliens in Star Wars (1977, he's also the tall band member and Rick is a couple aliens). Bottin headed up the effects for The Howling (1981), Robocop (1987) and sequels, Se7en, Fight Club, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Game of Thrones. He was 22 when they started filming The Thing in 1981.

Aliens came out in '86. This is from '82. If anything it's vice versa.
As a kid, I went to the movies with my family and saw this. Back then there really wasn't an emphasis on age restrictions, but I didn't know what we were going to see when we went to see it. It definitely freaked me out.
But I think the biggest points of this movie was the paranoia factor and special effects team making all of that craziness. It puts some of today's CGI to shame.

This is an absolute masterpiece in horror sci fi and psychological thriller. I've always been surprised they never made a sequel. There's renewed interest so who knows?

If you're wondering who could be the thing, spoilers below
I think it's Childs for a number of reasons.
    1. If you look in the room he was told to stay at, you'll see that there was a different colored jacket there, later on it goes missing when Childs also goes missing, indicating that the Thing got him.
    2. Childs did not have any glare in his eyes and also *no fog came out of his mouth* when he was speaking, indicating that he wasn't using genuine/basic human body mechanics for speech.
    3. Most importantly. Childs and Macready both knew that the thing can assimilate you through FLUIDS as well. If you accept a drink from someone who drank it and they are the thing, you're assimilated.
Macready did a test on his own on Childs by offering him the drink, Childs failed it by accepting the drink, which proves Macready that Childs is indeed the thing.
The little laugh Macready did before the final scene was his realization... *that he was indeed truly alone now, and standing before him was the thing imitating his ally*

Sorry to have to correct you (and you probably already realize this by now) but although ALIEN came out 3 years earlier and had tremendous influence on all future horror movies, THE THING is rather a remake from an old 1950's Howard Hawks sci-fi classic of the same name. And the scenes you're paralleling with the ALIEN storyline originated long before it was made. The only true similarities I see between the two are the special effects which were vastly superior to what they had in the 1950s.
The critics incidentally raved about the Howard Hawks original when it first came out. But I recall even in the '60s when I first saw it that it was pretty lame. THE THING as it was originally portrayed was James Arness (TV's Matt Dillon from GUNSMOKE) dressed up like a giant carrot. So John Carpenter's version was visually an enormous improvement. And in keeping with the premise of the 1930's novella, WHO GOES THERE?, that both versions were based on, Carpenter also added and went wild with the idea of people being taken over and replicated by the alien organism. But this is a theme that is prevalent in a lot of sci-fi classics, the 1956 INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, being maybe the most famous.
As for me I was blown away by the movie when I first saw it in the theatre back in '82. But once again the critics disagreed. Many panned it and I'd guess it was due to some weird loyalty they had to the lame Howard Hawks original. No one wanted to go out on a limb and admit that Carpenter had outdone a Hollywood legend. And I think that was the first time I realized that the critics are all about politics and cannot be trusted.
One final item you might find interesting. In one of the opening scenes MacReady throws his drink on a chess computer, calling it a "cheating b_tch" after it checkmates him, Well the voice of the computer is a cameo John Carpenter gave to his then wife, "scream queen" actress, Adrienne Barbeau. And it is intriguing to wonder what hidden message Carpenter may have been transmitting to the world of a marraige that would soonafter end in divorce.

The Thing is based off of the original film from the 50s, and loosely based on the book Who Goes There. The original planned ending, which was seen as too dark by the studio, was the destruction of the entire camp and everyone in it, except for a lone dog running away from the smoking remains of the camp. John Carpenter always believed that aliens should be shown as evil in film, since it's humanity facing the unknown. Unfortunate for the film in 1982, it went up against some of the best films of the 80s, and even some films that are considered some of the best ever made. It's biggest rival being the film ET, a family friendly film involving an alien. It bombed in theaters and was mainly rebuked by critics. It wasn't until years later in the 90s that the film started to receive the respect it deserved. Roger Ebert apologized to John Carpenter for his original review of the film, which was very harsh and critical.
