Just like in the 1970's when the first feed up car buyers took a leap of faith and bought Japaneses brands like Toyota's and noticed after a few years of ownership they were mostly going to the dealer for basic routine service and not expensive issues that left them stranded on the side of the road or taking the bus to work in the morning. This was when the word started to spread about Japaneses engineering, build quality and reliability which grabbed the attention of even the die hardest red white and blue Americans and brought them to the Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Datsun dealers with check books in hand. You just couldn't ignore it. These cars set a new bar for reliability per dollar.
Today, lets be honest, no one really needs a wrist watch let alone an expensive mechanical one. Just about everyone has a cell phone that gives you the time. You buy them for the appreciation of craftsmanship and attention to detail. A piece of miniature mechanical wonder. Today yet again, Japaneses brand SEIKO is raising the bar for what you get at this price point.

American cars in the 1950s and 1960s were of a far higher quality than Japanese cars and were more reliable as well.
What happened then was that the federal government started to interfere with American car manufacturing put such regulations upon them that the Japanese and Europeans could produce and sell cars into the US cheaper than what American manufacturers could.
The only way American cars could compete was to produce cheaper cars but that they meant their quality went down. Hence why German and Japanese engineering was considered better.
The two countries that the US gave money and resources to after WW2 came in and undercut the market place. Weak American presidents such as LBJ and Nixon combined with with the idiot congress destroyed American car.
Japanese cars did not have extra craftsmanship over Americans. They were cheap plastic cars that could be made cheaper which mean they could invest extra into their manufacturing.

I think it’s awesome how GS is quite transparent about their manufacturing process.
It's a selling point for them, so it makes sense that they are, but yeah, it's a good quality to have
I am absolutely amazed about Japanese manufacturing quality and result that they can provide for money you spend. Respect.
Seiko is extremely impressive in watch making.
You can buy a Premier or Presage and they feel better quality than an 80s Rolex.

The Japanese precision, dedication to every detail, makes the Grand-Seiko a respect watch and competes with many Swiss.
Seiko is pure Japanese, many Swiss brands now use Chinese parts.
It's safe to say that some Grand Seiko models are at a level that can only be matched by the finest Swiss watch companies, but not exceeded for fit, finish, and quality.
Seiko and Grand Seiko, perfection without a doubt. I own a number of each so I can write this with many years of personal experience with both brands!! This video does "GS" justice.

Best watches in terms of value for money i own a GS and is really perfect,swiss watches they are way overpriced,with Japanese products you pay first for quality not just for a brand name like other companies...Seiko for ever.
Swiss watches are not all overprieced. Only the luxury ones are so and Seiko is not luxury, so not a good comparison.
Go check Tissot if you look for a comparable swiss watch
I have a Seiko Presage (4R57A) and a Tissot Powermatic 80 Chronometer. I would say that Seiko has a better value though I can admit that Tissot is better in some areas but it's also more expensive.
This grand seiko honestly looks like another 100$ seiko watches, not worth the price tag.

I myself wear a Japanese watch (Orient Oyster) and I could guarantee you it looks more luxurious than this at much lower price.
Grand Seiko offers nearly peerless craftsmanship at their price range - their finishing would put some brands 2 - 3x the price in shame and they have some truly revolutionary and innovative movements (Spring Drive)
Thank you for reposting this video from Seiko's USA UA-cam channel ILoveSeiko. I loved it when it first came out. It gives you a healthy respect of what it takes to make the 9S movement. I wish I could find the video where Seiko takes a mainspring and stretches it out, then lets go of it. It snaps back into shape, then they install it in a watch ant it works! The only manufacturer I've seen do it.

I watched a video about the Breitling factory situated in Switzerland before this one and realised that Japanese watchmaking is a generation ahead than its Swiss counterpart and surprisingly they have achieved this all during the twentieth century alone, unlike Swiss who are into watchmaking ever since 16th century.
And a little bit of the 19th century as Seiko was established in 1881.

At the age of 21, I manage to bought a first GS quartz two tone 18k Grand Seiko 95GS by my own for me it's truly a mark of my success. I'm not capable of acquire these modern automatic Grand Seiko now as it's still too expensive , but i will be on my way..

I think they only make about 35000 Grand Seiko's ever year. They are building their brand through quality but most certainly they should have better marketing.
