Making and Installing Goose Neck Moldings
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 бер 2015
- I recently made a set of goose neck moldings for the upper case of the secretary desk I am building. After going through the process I've realized that it's not a very difficult process, just very time consuming. The set of moldings took me around 12-15 hours make and install.

I love that period furniture. I have a profound respect for this man’s workmanship . Beautiful !
Matthew, you are a craftsman indeed! Thank you so much for the time and effort in this tutorial and allowing us to see step-by-step how a proper Swan Neck/Goose Neck moulding is constructed.
Loved that "glue-well" trick. I've never seen that before. This tip was worth the price of admission all by itself. Thanks!
Jeremy McMahan Thank you Jeremy! It's a handy tip :)
Thanks for the complete video on just how to do such moldings. They are stunning and a lot of the credit goes to the guy who sharpened that goose neck scraper! That would be you I'm guessing. Great video and project and I am totally envious of the grain pattern in those doors.
Every time I push my luck making something beyond my skill level it takes me 4 times as long as I originally thought. Nice job, Thanks.
Matt you are a master in my eyes. I have about 35 years of age on you and 45 years behind you. Thanks for simplifying your projects.
Greg Teagle Thank you Greg! I really appreciate that!
That is beautiful Matt. I love seeing work like this which is not your typical subject matter. I learned a lot from this...
just came across your channel last week. Very impressive that you basically started your woodworking from scratch. you were definitely born to woodwork.
Thank you Tony!
I love how massive those moulding a make the already massive piece look. Incredible work. Thank you for sharing your craftsmanship with us Matt.
Paul Desmond Thank you Paul!
When my dad was still teaching woodshop, (and was still sharp mentally) I saw him glue up a 6' diameter semi circle in a similar profile. He glued the whole thing up and rigged up some jig on the shaper, lined up the power feed and slammed it through. It was on a Saturday and a few students were still in the shop working on their projects when he ran it through the shaper. He picked up that whole arc and it just passed all the way through that feeder and came out perfect on the other end. I was too young to appreciate the thought that went into it, but I remember one of his students saying, "That's the coolest thing I've ever seen." My dad didn't admit it then in front of the students, but he later told me that he was shocked that it even worked.
titanwr Wow. That's one of the best feelings. "I can't believe that actually worked" lol
That is absolutely, amazingly, astoundingly beautiful. Those mouldings (or similar ones) are now on my woodworking bucket list. Great presentation. Saved to "favorites".
Thank you!
Matt, as usual your talent is awe inspiring. There are so many things incorporated into this piece that you could have left imperect because it isn't seen up close...but you didn't. THAT is what makes you a passionate, precise and dedicated artisan with wood. I applaud you, your efforts, your attention to detail and your content!
Charles Dearing Thank you so much Charles! I really appreciate that!
This was very informative!
thank you for sharing. It gives me the courage to give this a go in the future. that said the right tools make for easier work.
Thank You for uploading this serie about the cabinet!
I doubt if I ever get this elaborate with woodwooking, but I sure enjoy watching you work. I did learn a tip on keeping the glue from oozing out the front, by the making of a glue well. Thanks!
Ron Briz Thank you Ron! Glad you liked that tip!
Ron Briz my question is... how would you do this without power tools? Beautiful work by the way. As always.
Turned out really nice Matt, you do beautiful work. Thank you for your time in making these videos for us to enjoy.
Adam Hollermann Thank you so much Adam!
You are a wood artist with an excellent eye for the detail..!
Wow, what beautiful molding. I've never seen it done before. Definitely learned a lot from this video. Thanks
Thank you David!
I almost didn't watch this video because I thought "That's way too complicated and I'll always stay away from that much detail." Your description completely changed my mind. That was an excellent video and incredibly understandable. Thank you! You just opened my mental horizons.
awesome to hear! thanks!
Great video Matt. I've always wondered how to do that type of molding. Now I know at least 1 way. Thanks!
Wow Matt! What an artist. What a beautiful piece
Dude you are insanely amazing at woodworking!! I have been watching all of your videos lately and you are a true craftsman!!
Thank you! I think my determination makes my skill level seem higher than it is :)
A lot of work, and the care shows. What a beautiful piece.
Jim Dockrell Thank you so much, Jim!
Matt, all I can say it WOW! Now, I hope you have a buyer for that wonderful secretary desk. You need to get a handsome price for the desk. Thank you for taking the time to share with us.
Jared English Thank you Jared! My wife is the buyer in this case. I'm really looking forward to moving it into the house. She's had a spot picked out for it for too long :)
Absolutely gorgeous work, Matt. To say they make a dramatic difference is the understatement of the century. They really look absolutely amazing.
Mark Lindsay Thank you so much Mark!!
Wow, that was fantastic! Loved this awesome router jig!So many cool woodworking techniques presented on your video! I really have to buy an extension for my router! Beautiful job! Millions of thanks!
Scrap wood City Thank you! Yeah that router extension is going to come in handy around the shop. I can think of a few times where I wished I had a bit more reach.
@@mcremona Hey! I get it. A "BIT" more reach. (Clever) :)
I love the heft of that moulding and how dramatically it changes the appearance of the top! Nicely done!
Leo Gallant Thank you Leo! They really make a huge difference!
Fantastic video! I will be watching the rest of your videos today and tonight...
I've always wanted to make swan neck moulding, but never sure how to make & never had the nerve to try. Thank you for the excellent video
Wow. Beautiful moldings. Definitely worth the time invested. This will be a heirloom piece you can pass down to your kids someday. Great job.
Bill Hantzopoulos Thank you Bill!
Looks awesome! Such meticulous patient work!
Chris

Built by Bill Thank you!
Just fabulous work, Matt! Thanks for sharing this, even though you've already shown us most of this process on some of your other videos.
Brian Mills Thank you Brain! It's always nice to see it all in one place.
looks easy to make such secretary) But it is just at first glance. Very beautiful and painstaking work. Thanks for posted this video.
Matthew Cremona Absolutely amazing results. Worth every minute of work in the end. This desk will be remarkable once it's complete.
WoodworkingManiak Thank you!
Wow that looks great matt. Brings back alot of memory on some of this kind of work i did in the past. Very time consuming but well worth the work for such an awesome piece of furniture.
whitewolf8758 Thank you! :)
Very impressive.....That looks amazing. The final results definitely outweighs the hours and hours spent making them. Maybe someday I will have the skill to take on such an beautiful project.
WestCoastMods Thank you! They're totally worth it :)
Matt your work is truly amazing! Looks awesome
Russell Park Thank you Russell!
Fantastic Matt, fantastic! I love how you do stuff!
Cy's Corner Thank you Cy!
Matt I have a gorgeous Queen Anne dining room set made by Drexel. You have duplicated the bonnet top perfectly! You do beautiful work. 💖💖
Matt this is my favorite part in the series so far. Amazing doesn't justify! Freaking spectacular.. Hope to meet you at the WIA event.
Wayne Brown Thank you Wayne! Hope to see you there :)
Wow Matt did a excellent job on the goose neck molding. I learned a lot in this video. Keep up the good work Matt.
Dale Weinke Thank you Dale!
Never seen that done before, learned something new today, thanks!
Canadian Woodworks Thank you Paul! It's something different. That's for sure!
Great video Matt, that project is looking fantastic!!
Thank you Steve!!
I'm jealous of the burr you got on that scraper! Great job!
they turned out really well. i only ever did goose neck once when i was training and that was on a spindle moulder with the correct cutter. i admire your patience to do this with a router, but this is what makes a craftsman. knowing how to reach your goal using what you have at hand. well done matt. p.s. i no longer have access to a spindle moulder as my shop is to small for one. but i sure do miss it.
Tayler Made Thank you as always! Having that profile cutter would be awesome. I can certainly say I have an appreciation for it now.
Well done dude!🔨
Good job as always Matt! We all are expecting to see this cabinet finished ;D!
Woodworking Barcelona Thank you Lluís!
Man, that's impressive!! Beautiful piece!
+Sig Guy thank you!
Excelent job.... Thanks Matthew for share.
Time and effort well spent it came out great. I got the book myself after you recommended it and is now one of my favorite books I think I will get another before long. Great job Matt.
Bob Egbert Thank you, Bob! I can see myself making all the projects in there. I think I started with the most difficult though :)
Matthew Cremona I'm not much on clocks but the rest for sure.
Great video, really well presented.
Francis Barnett Thank you so much Francis!
Very very good job man, congratulation
From Curitiba / Brazil
WOW !!! excellent work.
Matthew I have absolutely loved watching this come together.
My parents had one but it had glass doors on it and it was from the late 1800's. It was lost in a fire though :( This brings back memories
BigBlueMSP Thank you! That's really unfortunate!
***** Thank you Chris! It wasn't too bad. A little big of "fudgery" makes those profiles line up nicely.
I’m just a newbie router so a lot went over my head; I hope one day to make mould is like this however. Thank you, I jus subscribed too. Jeanine from Australia
Great video Matt and the molding and the entire project turned out fantastic. I was watching another channel a couple of months ago and a gentleman suggested using wood rated cyanoacrylate in conjunction with wood glue for doing molding returns when they are large or difficult to clamp up. His suggestion was to apply wood glue on each miter but leave 2-3 small circular areas bare of wood glue on each side and apply cyanoacrylate in those circular areas and hold the molding in place for 30-60 seconds while the cyanoacrylate cured. He only suggested the tip but did not demonstrate it. I think I would want to try this a few times on some scrap before I committed to using it on something of such importance as your gooseneck molding. The tip sounding interesting so I thought I would pass it along but I have not tried it myself yet. Congrats on such a beautiful piece.
Ron
Thanks again, Ron! yes, CA glue as a clamp works well but you have to remember to keep a bottle in your shop :D
Great looking piece Matt!
Tamás Elkán Thank you Tamás!
Great video, Matt! Your explanation for this was easy to follow and well thought out.
I would like to see you make a video in the future about the Domino to explain what it can do vs other methods.
Steve Collins Thank you, Steve! Interesting video idea. I need to start using it more so I have some good ideas :)
Love the camera angles on this video, as well as the woodwork :) I was doing some chisel work today and it is so nice being able to just shave ribbons off the wood and I know they are not nearly as sharp as yours.
woodturningjohn Thank you John! Aren't sharp chisels fun? Bring yours by and I'll get them nice and sharp for ya :)
Waaaaaaaay more patients than me! Nicely done, Matt!
Joseph Muench haha! yeah it was certainly very tedious work. Thanks Joseph!
Great work! Thanks for the video! Looks awesome!
thanks!
Very very cool! Amazing!!
Nice job Matt, Those look awesome.
Mike Fulton Thank you Mike!
An impressive final result.
Interesting video.
Thank you!
Love the process and the moldings sure make the piece. There most have been a ton of sanding involved. Nice job.
Ross Hastings Thank you Ross! Yeah, I don't think I've ever hand sanded that much in my life...
Wow Matt, you will just jump in and try anything. Good job too. You influenced me to at least buy Glen Huey's book, whether I ever tackle one of these period pieces or not. Now if I could just believe taking my chain saw and going to a frigid forest is fun...
Michael Anderson Thank you Micheal! You should give it a try. Anything with a chainsaw is fun :)
hi mat I love the design of the piece.every distance and placing of all the shapes are so perfectly suited.ill look for that book by glen huey.im going to try this goose neck shape.i make minatures so it wont be nearly so hard.cheers, keep up the grand work!
Thanks for the video. This is something I would like to try. Very helpful. I have the same book. Excellent resource. Your work looks awesome.
Julian Lech Thank you! Overall it went well. I had some struggles trying to figure it all out from the book so I hope the video adds some clarity for when you give it a try.
Amazing work
lovely job, pure class,
thank you!
Fantastic! Looks great.
Upper Cut Woodworks Thank you Matt!
wow nice work, great piece!
thank you!
Really awesome…..thanks for sharing!
Great job! I love your videos
Thanks!
So there was a second thing the audience should have notice during the live events :p 2:07 lens cap instead of dust cap... bold! That miter saw fence was awesome! I think I can safely say that is the tallest one I have ever seen. I was about to say you need to learn how to be ambidextrous during those weak side cuts. But you did during the next clip :) Who cares about the time it took to do that. You have total bragging rights. Big props.
diycentral I think you are the most observant of them all :) I think I used more carpet tape in this project than I have in my entire woodworking past. Cutting those moldings stuck to the table and then stuck to a tall fence really shows how much grab that stuff has. Occasionally I can show ambidextrous tendencies :)
You are thought of as an awesome, albeit underestimated woodworker in today's society. In previous generations, you would have been revered as a master. I am amazed at your talent and eager to watch as your talent grows and matures as time goes by. Congratulations on completion of, what would be a masterpiece for the rest of us mere mortals, but is but another step forward for a great talent like yours.
Michael Trent Thank you so much Mike!! One step at a time :)
Very cool! Thats a nice tip using a disk for the offset too.
TabLeft Thank you!
Man I'd have been nervous cutting up the molding lol Looks like you got the profiles matched up nicely at the miters, I like the technique of tracing the profile on the endgrain
This is art! Awesome!
Sebastian ocaño Thank you Sebastian!
All l can say is... Respect ✊🏾 amazing!!
Very cool, now who would give a thumbs down? Very talented and catch the channel when I can, this is very nice, thanks bro
probably the usual people. Thanks Wyatt!
Splinter Snobs?? Lol... haters gonna hate.. I'm building kitchen cabinets, using maple, I'm going to have to poke around your channel for joinery, see what your corner cabinets look like.. "no lazy Suzan.." says the wife. See you on the tube.
Dayuuum Matt, it's outstanding :-)
William Lutes Thank you so much William!
u got like a inbuilt cnc in ur hand....great work....absolutely stunning:)👍
thank you!
Very good Matthew 👌😄
Nice job my friend👍
Sir work of art
Brilliant idea regarding the crown molding I think I can use the same pattern for Oak handrail Thanks good job
Thank you! A handrail is a great application of this
a master! congratz.
Beautiful work
Thanks!
Wonderfully done
Beautiful
Amazing job!
Thank you!
Well Nat, clever use of router. I would call this a "serpentine or Swan neck bonnet mould." A gooseneck transition usually has a single curve to a mitered joint to straight section.
You say the first one with positive template was a mistake, but your master craftsman sub-conscience made you do it for practice since the negative ones needed to be perfect. Those are a beautiful addition to the piece and compliment its design. When your done and put it in the house, I would put those red ropes on posts around it to keep people away from touching it.
MRrwmac The second time through went even better so I think you're right. I'm going to have to make a room just for it :)
