- How to make a generator quieter is one of my most popular video so I decided to make an update with some new information on making your generator the quietest in the neigborhood by showing you how I made my generator 50% quieter with things I already owned!
From installing a car muffler on a generator in hopes to make it quieter to adding some sound deadening material inside the generator itself to see how much noise reduction we get AND also, placing the generator in a generator quiet box DIY versus the Zombie Box. All those sound test using a decibel meter is in this video.
Here are some of the material I talk about in this video and I recommend. All these are Amazon affiliate links which helps me produce my content at no extra cost to you, so thank you!

Yes facing the muffler at your neighbor's house will make it quieter at my house. I got 100 ft cord now I put it in my neighbor's front yard. I can't hear it at all
😂
I point it at a different neighbor everyday!
Ah yes rich I'm coming for you 😂
Lol.. Lol.. 😂
😂😂😂😅😅❤
With these recent rolling blackouts. I bought a champion duel fuel inverter generator it is quiet compared to a typical gas generator. I also bought 2 solar power stations that I can charge in under 2 hours with the champion. The 2 solar stations would keep me running a little under 2 days. I like the idea of keeping things quiet as possible. Great video!
I adapted a small broken chest freezer, removed the compressor, added casters and cut two 4x10 duct holes in the bottom for air flow. Used a 30w duct fan for cooling air. With a 2200w inverter generator inside, tests show inside temp increase less than 20f during operation. Sure its big, but easily wheeled around, and protects the gen from weather, and can be locked up. Really, really quiet!
That's a great idea. Thanks.
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing!!
What about the exhaust fumes ?
I've seen tons and tons of videos people putting Mufflers on a generator it actually doesn't truly work because the noise that you hearing is coming from the inside of the motor and the rattling is from all the metal parts
I use a Craftsman 4' by 2' half height resign storage shed. When I run it I leave the top lid cracked open and one of the doors cracked open and you can barely hear it inside the house or from the front of the house.
OMG the Ferengi quote. LOL
i got the cheapest idea...used Bose noise cancelling headset...muffed alot of those noisy generators...:)
Warranty Void? How would they know you put it in a box unless you tell them?
I built myself A Plywood Muffler Silencer for Regular Generator Champion Generator 8750 watts,7000 Running watts,I Reduced the Noise Down to 58 decibel at 15 ft from 88 decibel at close up. I will Soon Show everyone How I made it 😅😅
I have an automotive mid-silencer (glass packed) on my generator and there's definetively a difference.
wonder how easy it is to bypass the CO sensor to make it easier to build an enclosure. Especially if you plan to use it outside.
Right Arm Dude. Good video.
You can use a resonator extension on the exhaust pipe and it does not effect the exhaust output flow but will reduce the noise. They are used on diesel vehicles and equipment and does not affect the exhaust flow like a muffler will.
Thanks! 😊
I had that yellow one. Good generator.
Here in Arizona I needed a larger generator (12,500 w) to run the central air. I'm thinking of insulating the overhead door and venting the exhaust out with a flex pipe. I might use a high flow fan to cool the unit if I think it needs it.
Thoughts?
Are you asking about putting the generator in your garage?
If so, that's strongly discouraged because of risk of exhaust in your house.
Look into adding a micro air soft start system to the AC into $400. It will cut 75% of the amps to start it each time. It basically pays for itself over time. It’s hardwired in.
so it works? it is the same from a bike?
Do you know that Silicon RTV can withstand 280F ? Back in college I glued together a VW Rabbit carburetor successfully using RTV. It lasted the rest of the life of the car. That hole in your manifold could be attended to with RTV.
He is just a mouthpiece for inverter generators . Onan have the best generators
You can't put anything near the Champion or it shuts off! Does anybody know how to bypass the co2 sensor.?
Have you ever tried adding pipe to the exhaust into a barrel of water? Works wonderfully
no way
Also, don't set your generator on grass since grass is a sound conductor.
i work in the oilfield and we have alot of lightplant with bigger engines in them. trust me your brain will forget that sound specially with those smaller engines so the sound really doesnt matter
Engine intake does make a lot of noise as well
I have been running my generator in the shed, with the door propped up on a foot-stool, and a fan blowing across the generator and out the door.
Still considering a box so I can run less cord, and have easier access for longer-term use when the need arises 😬
As for neighbors, if they even ask about the noise, that’s my sign to make it quieter, and offer them a cord until I do.
I suggest you purchase a child house, you put insullation and an exhaust fan and you are ready to go at a little price. The biggest benefit is to avoid thief, they will not look in a child house...
Where I live that generator gone by the crack of dawn
I just don't understand how a car engine can be 200-300 horsepower and be almost silent. I have a harbor freight 8750 inverter generator and it's just too loud. And I don't even think it's as loud as some of the others. When I have it running, I can't even hear myself think, it's very distracting. You make a good point about maybe adding a muffler will reduce the engines power. but I don't see how a muffler off of like a stock honda civic or something similar would reduce power, when its made for something that literally has10 times more power than a generator like the 8750watt I have. The little muffler on mine has like a 1" hole on the exit. Do you really think a 2" muffler would affect its power? I don't think it would, but I'm not really trying to experiment on my new generator, but I would copy someone else that has a tried and proven way. That muffler you showed in the video did not make it quiet enough in my opinion. It was good that you showed that but I want mine to be silent.
The engine itself is noisier than the exhaust because of the metal parts clanking together. Those small engines are pretty simple and don`t run smooth and balanced like a car engine does. If they were put together like a car engine most people couldn`t afford to buy a generator.
If you're taking a generator camping you're not camping
How would they know you used a zombie box?
Tractor supply muffler. Avoid.
why dont these companies get off there asses n make mufflers n boxes pre made smh
you have to use the right kind of muffler FFS, they need to be low decibel ceramic coated, no issues.. your car doesn't have issues right? ceramic coated on the inside the heat dissipates .. the reality is they need to be water cooled so the engine can be sealed up save air intake and exhaust, radiator/fan .. you can't use boxes over an air cooled engine.. good grief..
have you ever heard a propane forklift inside like amazon? nope, that's right you don't hear them, even tho its internal combustion, how do they do it? welp they use a PROPER muffler, not one that has holes in it then hold a chunk of wood on the hole, dafugg was that? LAME! mufflers is how you quiet internal combustion engines, you NEED exhaust pipe to carry the heat away, at least 3 feet, and it should be heavy gauge and ceramic coated inside and out, wrap it around, or if its stationary like ina RV just run it beneath, with a couple small GOOD mufflers, you won't even be able to tell its running, JUST LIKE INDOOR PROPANE FORKLIFTS! look at how they are made and you will see
Cheapest was to make a generator quieter: ear plugs.
You’re not wrong! 👂😎
Im sure a junk yard would let you buy a muffler for $20 or less 😂
Build ones own zombie box for less
Don't see the sense in it, I know good reasons for wanting it quieter, but I personally don't care how loud it is😂 but DO want to put it IN an enclosure to avoid rain and snow on it...
Yes, I agree with your very nice comment 😊
the zombie box sucks don't waste your money make your own box if you can it is cheaper to make your own box
carbon monoxide sensor? thats peak stupidity but here we are. Scared of everything
Don’t forget, you can’t hook an inverter generator up to your house so don’t buy one unless you really need to.
The good news is that the EU7000is, luckily, is a floating neutral generator, so it can be used with simpler transfer switches, such as your "select circuit" switch, or breaker interlocks without violating the NEC's grounding and bonding provisions. (Many jobsite generators have bonded neutrals as per the OSHA rules on worksite use, but this means that they need to be used as separately derived systems. This, in turn, requires a transfer switch which switches the neutral wire over so that you don't put the two neutral-ground bonds in parallel inadvertently, which'd cause merry havoc with stray neutral currents and even GFCI tripping.)
That's NOT TRUE (NOT ACCURATE) at all! It's very common practice to connect to PROFESSIONALLY connect to the main house panel via a 120V Only Transfer Switch with a 120V Inverter Generator. I have a Champion 4650W Inverter Dual-Fuel Generator that I connect to a Reliance 6-Circuit Transfer switch to manage almost everything I needed in the house. It is not connected to any 240V circuits at all since it won' run a 240V Pool Pump or House AC but I don't need those in an emergency. It even runs the 120V Circuit for the HVAC NG Heater Fan that only needs 300W to run the Fan for the whole house heater.
I think he’s confusing the terms conventional vs inverter generator, vs a open frame vs enclosed frame generator.
My generator is an open frame inverter, so although it’s inverter, it looks just like the yellow one he refers to as not inverter.
And I’m sure there are enclosed generators that aren’t inverter, but he’d call them a inverter generator anyway
Bro wish u wouldn't have started talking once he closed the box!
Cant stand the noise. Solar generator is the way to go.
Not enough power

9: Turn the frigging thing off.
First find a generator made in America or a country that puts quality first, even if it ist an American brand make sure nothings loose or vibrating they could produce annoying rattles or buzzes and used 20 W 50 oil full synthetic or 0W 40 if you’re running it in the very cold climate
I am using Hyundai hgs 3500, Using kixx 10-40 oil. What do you think is this oil good ?
In our area In winter temperatur is 5C to 28C and in Summer 25C to 50C
