Hey there! I like your thought process. Just as an FYI, loader intake grates were created for buoy racers on a closed course to keep their pumps hooked up while at a 90 degree bank angle. Enjoy!
Great video! From my experience the top loaders are better in rough water and help with Hookup/acceleration but hurt the top end a bit. However your test showed that the top speed was the same/increased a little. I had one on my old ski the only thing I didn’t like is when I let off the throttle it felt like hitting the brakes with all the drag. Anyways I enjoy the video! Excited to see more tests!
Thank you! I had it on some years ago but took it off because it felt like I couldn’t jump wakes as freely…but after putting it on it definitely helps hook back up once I land.
Good intake grates are a must on a rough lake, helps hookup a ton. Definitely feels like you’re going over the bars if you drop off the throttle though
great video man thanks for making this! keep the js550 videos up! would be sweet if you tried a different water box. and like you said maybe a different impeller.
Thanks! Will look into the water box…I need to get into why I got more porpoising with the intake grate change…maybe more of a braking effect with the start of a little porpoising
It definitely hooks up better after jumping a wave, pump doesn’t have to catch up (especially with my 1/8th of a ton frame). I was surprised the top speed increased (although small), I would have figured the extra drag/“downforce” to the water would have slowed it. In the coming weeks I will be installing a new stainless impeller and wear ring for another comparison!
Have a 750 swap new topend and this top loader took forever to take off and get going. Once going you are locked in going straight and and feels like it's easier to catch an edge. Maybe with some grinding it could be more improved for turning and more high speed stability. Only rode it for 2.5 hrs. The open intake is more fun in my opinion.
Agree the open intake gives a little more freedom, but in larger wakes and chop I was finding myself not hooking up well after landing and would lose momentum and fall. Easy enough to swap in and out based on conditions
Get further over the front and smooth that porpoise out. A 2 bar intake grate will probably get you 1mph. Lots of small mods will help. Flame arrestor sucks if stock, it'll suffocate the engine. A pipe will help. I build 50+mph 550sx skis.
Excellent! Early this summer I plan to put in a new Wax Racing wear ring with a Solas 13/18 stainless impeller. Planning to remove the rev limiter too to see what effect that has.
No better time than now to try! I was 29 when I got mine…took me a good 2.5 seasons to learn how to drive it. Have enjoyed it almost 10 years! Easy to work on if you have the ambition.

@robp418 Agree on the off-throttle comment! Need to shift weight rearward before letting off for sure.
What an absolute madman, just doing a beach intake change out!
Better than pulling out of the water to the barn! :) Planning to do a pump swap on the beach this summer 😀
@@AdamPE21 Heck yeah bro thats gonna be great.
I friggen love this dude!
Here for the algorithm! You might be able to squeeze a bit more out of it with a stainless steel wear ring in addition to that new prop
For sure! Looking at the wax racing stainless wear ring with the impeller change!!! We gotta ride in the UP Sam!

Any notice in the bottom line pull bs the stock one? And stability and control/ ride better same or worse than stock? Thx

Can you get a pump stuffer and try that with and without the top loader?
I have seen stuffers not recommending a top loader. Will look into this though. Planning a pump rebuild with a Solas 13/18 next.
@@AdamPE21 it's a test and worth a video in my opinion

is that silicone around the pump factory? do you know if your pump has been rebuilt?
i’m not sure, but I plan on upgrading my wear ring and impeller early this summer, so when I pull it out we will see.
Check out the video I dropped today! Put a 2nd pump together with some fun hardware
i’m 19 thinking about getting a 550sx 1990 on facebook market never rode one but i been wanting one so long you think it’s worth it?
