- when i heard that the new mulan movie was set to release on disney plus on september 4, i knew exactly what i needed to cover. being asian (filipino, to be exact), mulan meant a lot to me as a child, as she was one of the few female asian protagonists in disney that kids like me had to look up to. this song in particular hits rather close to home, in various ways might i add. firstly, my parents were pretty strict and had very high expectations of me growing up, so i constantly felt like i teetered on the edge of disappointing them. on top of that, i came out as bisexual during my sophomore year of high school. my mother was incredibly accepting of me and took it very well, and while my father handled it well too, he's a slightly different story. so as you can see, i'm not a stranger to wondering if i'll ever be enough, and questioning whether the things i choose to do are a result of parental pressure or my own desire. don't worry too much about me though. i've been attending therapy and taking care of myself, and i have a great group of friends who always have my back.
but yeah. knowing how much mulan meant to me, along with how much i relate to the song, i definitely got a little emotional while recording and editing this. i hope this song reaches you in some way, and let this be a reminder that you are enough, you are valid, and you are going to be okay.

This is my first time listening to Reflection since discovering that I'm nonbinary. Somehow, I never realized how queer-coded this song is. Beautiful cover!
so many Disney Renaissance songs are queer-coded because howard ashman (the lyricist of a lot of them) was gay and influenced a lot of them very heavily(the little mermaid is one of the ones he got the most artistic control over)
