- Sew Inspired by Bonnie's Tuesday's Tips: Successfully Embroider Towels the Easy-Peasy Way! Have trouble with the towel popping out of the hoop? Want all your designs to be placed correctly within a set with differing sizes? Not sure what stabilizer(s) to use? Get answers to all these questions and more!
MPORTANT: I forgot to mention in the LIVE video that once you take your hoop to the machine and add the basting stitch (but BEFORE embroidering anything), move the design to its lowest point within the hoop. That way it will be 7/8-1" above the band when sewn!

Hello, I'm an elderly lady (nearly 80) from Belgium who started last year with embroidery on the machine. I find it very interesting to read your advice about puckering, because I had a lot of it when I embroidered on fine tissue like silk for instance. Thank you so much for the advice and I hope I will learn a lot from you. With kind regards, Cassy from Antwerp Belgium
Getting the right recipe for stabilizer, design and fabric takes a little time to learn. But if you're trying to avoid puckers on very thin fabric, make sure your design isn't too dense for the fabric used. The denser the design (heavier) the more stable and "beefy" the fabric needs to be. With thin fabrics you don't want to change the "hand" of the fabric and light airy designs will work best.
These tips have been so helpful, since watching this i have done so many towels and hand towels and they have turned out fantastic its my new gift to all my children and grandchildren thank you
That's wonderful news! Sew great to hear! You've made my day. Glad you found these tips helpful. =)
Beautiful towels.enjoying your tips. Betty from La.
As a lady in very senior years and now a novice with sewing and hoop embroidery, I'm loving the help from you. Thank you so much for your selfless help. It is very much appreciated.
Thanks for your advice Bonnie

Thank you 😊
You're most welcome!
You are an awesome teacher.
Thank you so much! =)
Thank you. As a newbie (and never enough time to do all the embroidery projects I want) towels are the next thing I really want to try. Great tips and video as always!
Thank you for your kind words. Just let me know if you have any questions. =)
Hope I've taken some of the fear out of trying them. =)
Thank you very much for all the great information. You made my projects so much easier. You also explain everything so that it is easy to understand.
Enjoyed your video. I have embroidered a lot of towels and still can pick up useful tips. I would like to share this one: I have found coffee filters work better than paper towels to remove sticky stuff. They leave no fuzzy residue.
Thank you for the kind words! While I normally don't have any fuzzy residue from the particular paper towels I use, I could see where that might happen. Great idea using coffee filters! I never thought of that. They're less porous and should be more consistent from brand to brand. I'll have to give that a try. Thanks Janice for sharing that tip with all of us! Great idea!
Hi; I am in mid wales with snow and ice, and only just learning about my machine, so your tips are great😀
Sounds like the perfect weather to stay in and get to know your machine! I'm glad you're finding my tips helpful. =)

Thank you so very much for the kind words! =)
💞💓💯❣️love your videos
Ahhhhhhhh, that's so sweet of you to say! =)
Dark brown was hard to see, I had trouble seeing the bands on the towel. But I am new at this.
I would be afraid to use a tear away on a the back of a bath towel, but looks like the stitching wasn't dense so a tear away can be used--and/or to avoid the scratchiness and look of stabilizer on the back? I know when i have used tear away on cotton fabric i've had some bunching up of my embroidery like a small gathering or puckering. What brand of stabilizer did you use on the towels-prefer? Also, did you use a 70/11 universal needle to embroidery on the towels. Thanks
I use stabilizers from The Embroidery Store. As for needles, I used a 75/11 embroidery needle. =)
Did you you use a "wash away"? I know you mention a medium weight tear away-i didn't know if it was a wash away. thanks
I only use a wash away for the top as wash aways are not "technically" stabilizers but rather used to hold fibers down to help prevent pokies. I use a medium wear tear away for the backing. If you used a tear away and you got some puckers, make sure you're hooping correctly (not pulling on the fabric to make it tighter) and also that your design isn't too dense. If over 20k stitches, I normally will double up the tear away or go to a cut away stabilizer. Hope that helps. =)
Thank you. Did my first embossed towel and your video was extremely helpful. Came out beautiful.
Hi Bonnie, I just found your video while searching on answers to easier hooping! I've been struggling with hooping towels!! I've gone to sticky tear away because it's the only other option I have (I don't have any adhesive spray!). The one thing I've noticed in using the wash away (which I've been using up until tonight when someone told me not to use wash away on terry cloth because the loops can poke through then!), is that if I use the heat away, it leaves a film on my iron!! I'm not sure if that will come off of my iron now?? What are your thoughts on that? Also, I haven't used the basting stitch yet! I've just been pinning it in place!
You will love a basting stitch. It sounds like you used wash away instead of melt away. It shouldn’t stick to your iron and they look similar. You can use an iron cleaner from a tube sold at JoAnns and it’ll clean it off. I’m not a fan of sticky stabilizer on towels because it can pull loops. Another option for a topper if you don’t want to use a wash away would be matching a fine tulle to your towel and stitch on that. Trim or tear away.
🙏😁 hi & Tks
Thanks so much for the tips. I'm wondering what stick spray you used? Because I had used one the stuck to my needle and broke it so ever since then I'm afraid to use the sticky sprays. Thanks.
I use KK100 which is a sticky spray used specifically for embroidery. There are several brands on the market. It sounds like you got a hold of a quilt basting spray which will gum up your needles.
What size hoop would u recommend for a standard bath towel?
The size of hoop is determined by the size of your design. It's always recommended to use the smallest hoop that your design will fit in for best results on any project. =)
I love your Video. On your website, it shows different sizes as different prices. Can you resize to go from a hand towel to a bath sheet with one set?
Hi I'm in the UK, great video templates for me are a nightmare. I'm just curious about what needles to use when machine embroidering. My husband bought me a machine and it came with blue tipped needles only. Are these the ones I should only be using, or is it best to use ordinary. Thanks
It sounds as though you have a Janome machine as I believe blue tipped needles are what they come packaged with. I normally use a 75/11 needle for most of my embroidery projects which will also work on your Janome. You can go to your dealer for which needle would be best for various projects. Do not use the older Singer needles on your machine.
@@SewInspiredbyBonnie thanks for reply. Someone told me that blue tipped needles are solely for machine embroidery. Yes I have a janome memory craft 350e. I get confused as one person says different to the next. I will try the other needles though and compare the stitches.
@@jules1990 Yes, it can be very confusing when you hear so many different things. I found this "cheat sheet" on needles from Nancy Fiedler (a Janome educator) that looks quite good. You may want to print it out to keep it handy. I found it here: www.janome.com/siteassets/blog/2016/sewing-basics-1.pdfwww.janome.com/siteassets/blog/2016/sewing-basics-1.pdf
HELLO BONNIE, I JUST FOUND YOUR SITE, GREAT JOB MY QUESTION, I READ EVERYWHERE THAT YOU NEED TO USE CUT AWAY ON THE BACK, I DID EVERYTHING YOU DID, BUT I USED CUT AWAY AND I TRIM VERY CLOSE TO IT, ( I DON'T LIKE TO SEE EXTRA PAPER ON BACK), SO WHAT TYPE OF TEAR AWAY ARE YOU USING, SO I CAN SEE IF I HAVE IT, OTHERWISE IM DOING THE SAME THING, AND YES ITS MUCH EASIER TO FLOAT THE TOWEL AND BASTE AROUND DESIGN, THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR VIDEO, I WILL CHECK YOUR OTHERS.. GREAT JOB. ALSO, YOU DID SAY YOU CAN USE EMBOSSED DESIGNS ON OTHER THINGS BESIDES TOWELS, TERRY ETC. FABRICS
I use a medium weight tear away but a cut away works very well too and is needed for denser designs. Yes, you can use embossed embroidery designs on just about any napped fabric. If the fabric stretches, I'd recommend a cut away stabilizer. =)
Hi, have you used bobbin fill for the back?
Bobbin Fill is a Janome embroidery bobbin thread that is thinner in weight. I do use bobbin thread for the backs of all my embroidery--just don't use the Janome brand since I don't have Janome machines. =)
Love the video. Can you tell me what font those were done in, Love it. and did you place the circle around it?
Mary Meyers The embroidery designs from from my site at: www.sewinspiredbybonnie.com . Just click on Designs and then Alphabets. It’s the Elegant Embossed Alphabet. The circle is part of the embroidery design. =)
Is it important to have the bobbin thread and the top thread the same when you are embossing?
Not unless you want the back to match the front but otherwise, "no", it's not necessary.
Hello I love your video I want to embroider a light house on my towel but I don't have embroider machine 😑
You will need an embroidery machine for sure! =)
please how do you remove burn mark from towels and on the magnetic hoop its hard to keep the heavy towel in place .
I never hoop my towels when embroidering as the towels are too thick to hoop well and to avoid hoop burn. However, since you've already got hoop burn Embroidery Geek has written an article covering many fabrics and methods to remove hoop burn here: www.machineembroiderygeek.com/hoop-burn-how-to-remove-it-and-avoid-it/ You might try a little spritz of water and letting it dry. A little bit of ice and letting dry. Or brushing it with another towel. Just avoid over brushing/scrubbing.
What size bath towels do you use
Carrie Toll I’ve used all different sizes of towels. Everything from a wash cloth to a bath sheet. You’ll just want to use an eye appealing design that’s appropriate for the size towel you’re using.
How do I find the "basting stitch" on the Brother PE800? I only see "frames" as options.
You don't have a dedicated "basting stitch" on your machine but you can use the straight stitch from your frames as a basting stitch. Just pull in the straight stitch square frame and resize it slightly larger than your design. It will put itself in the last position within the segments of your design, so you'd need to skip colors to stitch it first and then go back to the beginning to start your design.
is the basting stich done with embroidery machine or your sewing machine
Connie Strom it’s done on the embroidery machine.
Sew Inspired by Bonnie How do you make a basting stick with an embroider machine?
Bonnie if you wash the towels does'nt that take away the newness of the towels?
I've found that one washing doesn't take away the newness and far outweighs the disappointing appears of shrinkage that happens after washing if the embroidery is done prior. However, this oftentimes is a personal preference. =)
Hi bonnie
what size of needle do you use
michelle gagne I use my standard 75/11 embroidery needle. 😊
I have a question: Why wouldn't you use a WSS on the back of the towels? I would be concerned that the backing stabilizer would be very scratchy on a facecloth and when drying one's body with a towel.
Tear away softens over time. I don't use water soluble on the backs of towels because once it's gone you have nothing to continue to stabilize the stitches. If there's nothing to stabilize the stitches, then the stitches have a tendency to curl when washed. It's a personal preference. =)
I need to figure out how to enlarge font size. I did my name Connie and it is 3 inches by .8. can you help me
Connie Strom you should be able to do that in software depending on the font’s satin stitch width and such.
Enjoyed the video. How did you add the taupe/brown horizontal lines that are going across the towel. Is that stitching? Does the instructions come with the embossed alphabet that you sell? Thank you for your time. Linda Wenzel
Thank you! The towels came that way with the lines already on them. I just matched the color of thread I used to the lines already on there. I got the towels from Target. =)
HOW DO YOU GET THE BASTING STITCH?
Most machines have a built in basting stitch. If not, then you can create a basting stitch in a lot of various software. =)
Did you pre wash your towels?
If I'm concerned about any shrinkage I do. =)
Sew Inspired by Bonnie I did prewash towels they are 100% cotton thanks
@@mikefrazier6213 I think this debate will never go away but, personally, I don't like surprises after my embroidery is finished. =)
