And that, my friends, is a Bo Diddley beat. Ironically, Bo Diddley's version doesn't use a Bo Diddley beat.
It's basically a bragging song that uses a lot of voodoo type imagery (even the title/chorus is a word play, i.e. Who do you love/Hoodoo you love). Bo Diddley himself said this about the lyrics:
"I'm telling this chick ... how bad I am, so she can go tell the cat she's hanging with, 'this dude is something else.' That's what it kinda meant, cat ridin' rattlesnakes and kissin' boa constrictors and stuff."
George Thorogood and The Delaware Destroyers are one of many, many bands that have covered this classic. The Doors, The Band with Ronnie Hawkins, Bo Didley, and a bunch more. But Ol' Lonesome George has one of the best versions around. His guitar riffs are killer.
Bo didn't "cover" it. He wrote it.
Quicksilver Messenger Service does a good version too!
George is like cracking a cold beer. It's simple and enjoyable.
Simple go play the lick an tell me it's easy
Excellent analogy. Yeehaw!
Best description ever of a musician!!!
See? Jeff Jones gets it!
@Jeff Jones, George is like a cold beer and a sore dick............you can't beat either of them!! 😁
This kind of thing is called a Talking Blues, where there's storytelling that's rhythmic, a sung or shouted chorus, and of course crazy blues solos eVERYWHERE!
love it, just love it. That riff is "the Bo Diddeley beat" or... "Shave and a haircut.... two bucks" George covered the Bo Diddeley version but this song has been done by lots of folk
I’ve always heard it as
‘Shave and a haircut….two bits’
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 that sounds better. My error.
George combined the style of Bo Diddley's self-titled song "Bob Diddley" with Bo's "Who Do You Love".
Bo Diddley's signature style is really defined in "Bo Diddley"... sort of like "Johnny B, Goode" is Chuck Berry's signature style that so many people have emulated.
George combined the two, and gave it a bit more of an edge, but really did a great homage to Bo with this one.
Notice one line in the lyrics even says "Got the goodtime music, and the Bo Diddley beat". George added that line...
'MOVE IT ON OVER' is a Hank Williams tune covered by Thorogood that you should check out.
Oh yeah. Originally recorded by Hank Sr. in 1947! Thorogood brought it back, rocked it up. His version is great.
That Infamous Bo Diddley beat. You don't hear it a whole lot nowadays but it shows up in a lot of songs over the years and once you're used to it, you can easily spot It. Yeah! If I remember right, Willie and the Hand Jive has a Bo Diddley beat. Another really creative use of it is in the Elvis Presley song, Marie is the name of His Latest Flame. But I hear it today every once in a while.
One of the coolest concerts I ever went to. Was right before smoking in theaters was banned. People passing around bottles of shine, among other things. Think we only bought a couple beers, but we were not able to drive home thanks to the Brother's & Sisters sharing the love they snuck in. Was as blast!!
House lights went down ….little lanterns fired up….heheh….ahhhh the good old days.
There are so many covers of this song and most are excellent,
The "Bo Didley" beat can be found on lots of early rock songs.
Always loved the slide in Georges songs. Sounds so cool. Great reaction
Lonesome George Thorogood…
He & his Band The Destroyer’s toured all 50 US states in 50 days. A lot of it by Taxi Cab.
The Destroyers and a band named the Nighthawks were playing shows in Georgetown Wash DC at venues across the street from each other & at midnight, while both bands played Elmore James' "Madison Blues" in the same key, George and the Nighthawks Singer left the clubs their Bands were performing in, met in the middle of M Street, exchanged guitar patch cords and went on to play with the opposite band in the other club.
Saw them while I was in the Navy back in the 80s. Seeing them live it sounds exactly like the recordings and everyone was a dance in their craziest dance was a great time. Thank you for that memory
I was in the Navy in 80s too . where were you stationed , what ship ? If you don't mind my asking
George Thorogood also does a song titled, "Willie And The Hand Jive". A fun song that Lex will probably enjoy (she can do the Hand Jive to it, too).
It's another awesome song that has the Bo Diddly beat like in "Who Do You Love".
George’s version of Hand Jive is the best!
It’s a Bo Didley song about a love triangle. Who do love ? Him or me?
Then he describes himself as having dark magic.
His live version is particularly exceptional
Thorogoods big influence was a dude named John Hammond, Hammond is an incredible guitarist. He also took cues from John Lee Hooker.
The Bo Diddley beat is so classic, Bo Diddley was the MAN and this is a really good cover.
I knew a couple of guys who were kind of just like this. They lived reckless. Tried everything, risked everything and the girls flocked to them. They loved the bad boys until the whole thing crashed and burned. Somehow they landed on their feet most of the time. This song has a definite bad boys vibe. Oh, and if you are liking that guitar sequence try listening the iconic Bo Didley. One of the true legends of early rock and roll. That was his signature riff. I enjoy your reactions. Your honesty is refreshing.
Love the positive vibes you both produce on your channel! I've been puttin' together a SOLID list of songs for your reactions, and now I get to scratch this jam off my list. Once again, impressed!
I don't have the imagination to ever think of describing a song as an "impromptu picnic"
Lex is so cool!
If you pay attention to the melody, it sounds just like the song from 1958 "Willie and the Hand Jive"
Thorogood is AWESOME on guitar and his rough edgy voice is PERFECT for the material he sings and plays...AND...he has the best sax player I've ever heard. Sure other Sax players have turned out some great stuff, but this guy just does it over and over and over. BLUE HIGHWAY is an excellent song with a sweet Sax solo.
One of my favorite bands back in high school...talk about rocking...
George is one of a kind and he wanted it that way.
This song gives me the same vibes as Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild."
This counts as a Bo Diddley cover. Originally from 1957. Hand Jive is a Bo Diddley song also.
This song's beat was the birth of rock.
"Impromptu Picnic" will be the title of Lex's first album.
Brad & Lex, his "Move It On Over" and "Nobody But Me" are next for you!! The lyrics mention the Bo Diddley beat. A lot of artists copied the Bo Diddley beat!
Gear jammer, I drink alone
Move It On Over...a redo of a Hank Williams song...
@@craigplatel813 they did "I drink alone". Bout a month ago...
@@kennyfleck8630 I'll have to go find it
Willie and the Hand Jive by Johnny Otis, which also employed Bo Didley's beat. I was lucky enough to see Bo Didley on a concert in the UK with Little Richard, the Rolling Stones and one half of the Everly Brothers! Years later I lived for some years in LA when Johnny Otis had a radio programme. Way back in the 50's he had produced loads of records and he knew everybody.
Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley had a song writing competition to see who was The Man. 'I'm A Man' was based on 'Hootchie Kootchie Man' & got a response with 'Mannish Boy'
Speaking of hand jive, George has a song called Willie And The Hand Jive that you should check out & see how it compares to the one you know from Grease.
I Saw BO DiDDLEY in the "70's" ,GREAT SHOW !!
Biker rock music. Blues rock, rockabilly influenced. This was a Bo Diddley cover 🎶 This song comes out a lot on TV.
Wife here...This is just a badass Manly song!!..Great cover of the original!!
The Doors do a live cover of this. It’s really good too!
Agreed. As a Doors fan, It's good in their own way, but I still prefer Georgie. ✌
Saw him play in my state Delaware in the 80s!!
Lonesome George!! What a great show. His tone made Link Wray sound like Steely Dan!!! You're gonna love Rory Gallagher and John Lee Hooker.
You are only the second person I know who knows who Link Wray is. Had a friend in college who absolutely loved Link Wray.
@@denystull355 shame he still isn't in the Rock n Roll Hall of fame. He invented the power chord 😆
@Kenny Duthie huge influence on my music!!!
I don't know if anybody has said this yet, but George Thorogood's style goes back to the 1950s, and he tells you who invented it when he says ...the Bo Diddley beat..." Way back in 1956 a black blues singer and guitar player hit the charts as "Bo Diddley" with a song titled "Bo Diddley." That's where that "chunka, chunka, chunk...chuck-chunk.." beat and guitar licks came from. How Bo didn't become a superstar way back then I will never know. He influenced everybody who played rock n' roll, but Thorogood was the best at playing it that way years later.
George Thorogood covered Hand Jive too. It’s got the same beat.
Best reaction yet! I love SCREAMING GUITARS!
The rhythm of the music is known as the Bo Diddley beat. This was a Bo Diddley song & Thorogood was a huge fan. He even mentions the Bo Diddley beat in the lyrics of this song. Bo Diddley was a bad, bad man.
They call that the Bo Diddly beat.Hand Jive also uses that beat.Right on Lex.
That Di Di Di ,Dah Dah beat is called The Bo Didley Beat. RIP to Bo Didley.
yes george has a song called hand jive
Another George Thorogood Bo Diddley covers. Epic slide work.
Miss Luan is another great George Throughgood and the Delaware Destroyers song .
This is awesome driving music !
There's a couple of cool amvs out there that pair this with Supernatural footage.
Bo Diddley rockabilly, blues influence.
Can’t wait to see Lex shreddin’ some of George’s riffs. Brings back memories as a child riding with my Dad. Maybe start off with something a bit easier first like Green Day or something along those lines. Not a guitar player, but I learned how to play a Godsmack(even though I’m not really a fan anymore)song and it was fairly easy once I got the finger placement down. Get good at playing easy stuff first, then ease your way slowly into the more complicated stuff. Three chord progression is the way to go at first.
The Doors, on the album "Absolutely Live" do a great version of this song
you know guys....George was set to be a pro baseball player..he was that good but got into music instead and didnt play pro ball....but he was offered endless jobs in the game but played guitar and sang instead.
ahhhhh my fav thorogood song... i think he does hand jive too
If this sounds familiar, it's because "I Want Candy" was inspired by Bo Diddley and contains the infamous Bo Diddley beat.
He gives tribute to the original by adding "And that Bo Diddley" beat to these lyrics.
Drinking outta the bottle with no glasses, yeah you got it.
I love your takes on songs.
every time I hear Thorogood, I wanna get to the fridge and grab a dozen beer. Rock on you 2 Rockin' Rollers
Beautiful Creatures - "Going Off"
Thank you for sharing this with me
George is Pure Rock N Roll and one of my Favorites!!! As he mentions in the Song Bo Diddley, you should check him out, one of the First Rock n Rollers!
Jesus, Lex. You have such a wonderful way of describing things. Please don't ever change.
The Bo Diddley beat for sure! Bo Diddley did this song in the late 50s. ♥
The great thing about Bo Diddly and why he’s a founder of Rock n Roll is that ‘Bo Diddley riff’. In my opinion he’s the first guy that showed everyone what you could really do with the guitar. In that way he influenced everybody around and after him.
Saw him in 1985 open for Eric Clapton...... talk about a great show....
THAT is the Bo Diddley beat.
With some Elmore James mixed in there.
"Doin' that crazy hand jive!"
This song from Bo Diddley is often covered. I love the 1969 version from the Band Juicy Lucy, but this one is also great.
Also this is a fine example of the “Bo Diddley “ beat!
"Hand jive" is another George Thorogood song. I'm impressed that Lex would recognize that. It's a good one!
This is the Bo Didley beat, typical of manty of Bo's songs covered by many people including Buddy Holly (Bo Didley), Quicksilver Messanger Service (Hey Mona) and The Rolling Stones (Not Fade Away). Why not check out te original artist, especially later live performances where the audio quality is better.
Faith-George Michael, Shes The One-Bruce Springsteen, Desire-U2, Cuban Slide-Pretenders, Magic Bus-The Who to name a few more of the dozens of songs with the Bo Diddley beat
Stones covered Mona in 1964 as well!
@@flyingburritobro68 And, remarkably well! As well as their cover of "Not Fade Away".
You guys are awesome!!
That's an old Bo Diddley song. then it was done by The Doors. Then G. Thorogood.
Me & My friend play tht Hand-Jive song as a practice tune-up 🔥
This is my favorite GT song by far. It's that Bo Diddly beat. Also he does a version of Willie and the Hand Jive.
Bob segar live bullet recorded in Detroit Michigan. When bands were live and real music was pkayed
Lots of rock and roll bands have used this Bo Diddley beat, cause it’s AWESOME!
The band and Ronnie Hawkins did this on the last waltz ,it was fire
Now you have to hear the doors do it
Morrison kills it🔥
The Doors do an absolute KILLER cover of this, well worth checking out!
Born on February 24, 1950 (age 72), in
Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.
Check out Ingwei Malmsteen Heaven Tonight(1st name might be misspelled sorry) but this song is why I started playing guitar and now many other instruments. The singer used to be my x best friends idol the singers name is Joe Lynn Turner whom at the time had incredible vocals
Yes willy and the hand jive is a song from around the same time as who do you love. It also has the bo diddly beat. Levon helm from the Band does an excellant laid back live vetsion
If I had to pick a favorite Thorogood song this would be it.
That's a Bo Diddley beat. Imagine having a "beat" named after you. Bo Diddley has one. Peace. (check out Willie And The Hand Jive by Johnny Otis)
The Rift is the Bo Diddley beat
Bo Diddly Beat; that's what drives the song. George T did a re-make of Bo Diddly's original tune. 👍👍👍
Linda Tillery did a nice song with the Bo Diddley beat "Willie and the Hand Jive" with Eric Bibb and Taj Mahal.
LUCKY BRAD!!!
Much love from Québec, Canada!
Can't go wrong with George
Bo Diddly" riff personified. Been covered many times, classic rock!
Try this one, it is George with Albert Collins and the song is Madison Blues
🎶For what I’ll call Rich female vocals Brad, this Norwegian band: ua-cam.com/video/CWWj8nIvAfc/v-deo.html p.s. I don’t know if they still are, but at one time they were Norway’s national band.
The Foundations" Build me up Buttercup" if you listen to it once, then you can't stop!
Almost a tribute song to Bo Diddley and Howlin Wolf... He even mentions Bo Diddley in the lyrics.
