  • After deliberation I went the thrifty route and bought the JINWEN. It is going to work fine for me, even with minor design deficiencies. Here's my review.
    Oh, and a few folks asked where we got it: www.amazon.com...

    Thank you for your quick review, I was just looking at ordering one of these tool post kits for my new Harbor Freight lathe.
    The 1/4" Tool holder is actually a 1/4" to 3/8" tool holder which is why with a 1/4" bar in there you have to turn those set screws in so far.

    The right sized cutoff tool or parting tool for that toolholder is either a P1 which is 1/16 wide,or the P1N which is .040 wide and both are 1/2 tall. I have the old A2Z version of this toolpost but the P1N is what I bought from A2Z when I ordered mine.

    Thanks! Mine just came yesterday. Seems like it will do fine on soft metals and plastics.

    will a 1/2" tool bit work in the tool holder and be on center?

    • @JimmiePorterAtStuartArts
      @JimmiePorterAtStuartArts  6 років тому

      weldercamaro 1/2" cutters will fit in the holder, however i have only 1/4" and. 3/8" cutters. If you look at the video you will see the height locknut isn't fully engaged with the 3/8" cutter. I think I'd be able to adjust to center for a 1/2" tool, but the lock nut wouldn't fit unless I replace the all thread with a longer piece.

      thank you for the reply. lms says there qctp works for lathes with a 5/8" spindle center to top of compound distance. i was wondering what the thickness of the tool holders is under the 1/4" tool ? it looks like 11/64.

      weldercamaro I'd love to know that myself...unfortunately we are away from home for a few weeks. I'll try to remember to look when we're back home.

    are you going to use this tool post in the unimat or the Chinese lathe? would that fit well with the unimat?

    • @JimmiePorterAtStuartArts
      @JimmiePorterAtStuartArts  7 років тому

      yosacfc: Thats a really great question - I hadn't thought of that. I'm going to check when I get in tomorrow. I'll get back to you!

    I would be interested in hearing what you will use the Unimat for now that you have a 7X mini lathe.

    • @JimmiePorterAtStuartArts
      @JimmiePorterAtStuartArts  7 років тому

      Hans Schmidt: Wow what a great question! My mental model is that the Unimat is used for things "cigarette" sized and smaller, and the Chinese lathe for larger items. But the Chinese lathe can probably do small stuff well, now that I've tuned it up. The real answer may be I'll keep the Unimat for sentimental reasons - it belonged to my father-in-law and I simply LOVE it. Can a man be emotionally attached to a tool?

    • @JimmiePorterAtStuartArts

      Hans Schmidt: A buddy did suggest that I keep the Unimat set up with a three-jaw Chuck and the Chinese with a four-jaw. I haven't found the need for a four-jaw yet though, but it's a good idea I think. Your question has weighed heavily upon me!

      Heh.heh. I was in no way suggesting that you consider getting rid of the Unimat! And yes...we do form warm feelings for certain tools. My question was more curiosity in terms of "What can a Unimat do better as a lathe (setting aside the milling column for the moment) than a 7X lathe?" As Dave M and others have shown, the 7X lathe fitted with an ER collet chuck can do very precise work on very small pieces if the compound is properly fettled. Perhaps the question would be more relevant for those that have yet to purchase a small lathe...especially as the Unimats have become rather expensive on the used market. That being the case....they are apparently still valued by many people, notwithstanding that other alternatives are available.

      Hans Schmidt it was a worthy question!

      Unimats were well made for starters and more robust size for size with no skimping in the build to produce cheapest they can.

    Hi - have you had any issues with it rotating after locking the tool in place? I'm not a machinist but trying to create mostly 3D printed lathe (if possible) and have one of these mounted on a PLA plastic platform. I embeded a nut in the plastic and I can tighten it down no problem but it still seems to want to spin on that bolt unless I tighten it down so much I can't even rotate the handle. I'm trying to figure out if this is essentially a "that's what happens when you mount metal on plastic" problem or if this something that can happen with this tool post.

      Henry Berg I've had no issues with rotation but I don't do any heavy machining. Some plastics do have "lubricity" though...
