Walter Mitty [WM] has five intense daydreams spread over and during a shopping trip downtown with his wife. The dreams are detailed, vivid, fanciful reveries --- while he is fully awake --- that occupy his mind almost completely; Thurber packs in and fleshes up his WM as the main actor in the dreams: WM is a war hero in two war-zone dreams, a heroic villain in a courtroom drama dream, a maverick surgeon in a hospital operating room dream, and a defiant hero-to-be-shot-before-a-firing-squad dream.
WM's obsession-compulsion with so much dreaming is, if we go into the story carefully, neither humorous nor funny; indeed, the story is one of the saddest of Thurber's tales.
