  • Is the Billet Compressor Wheel vs the Cast Compressor Wheel Worth It. The Billet Compressor Wheel is Usually Over 100 Dollars More than the Cast Compressor wheel, Which Leads You to the Question, is the Billet Compressor Wheel Worth It or is Your Money Best Spent Somewhere Else? I Made This Video To Help You Make an Educated Decision.
Learn which is better billet compressor wheel or cast compressor wheel. Use this video to make an educated decision on which compressor wheel is best for you.
Some Billet Compressor Wheels Weigh Less than the Cast compressor Wheels and Some Billet Wheels Weigh More than the Cast Compressor Wheels. I Would not Make a Decision Based on the Weight Alone. I Would Chose Based on Usable Surface Area that the Blades Can Use the Capture More Air. In this Video I also Demonstrate an Example of a Billet Compressor Wheel that I Didnt Think Was Worth It. The Main Advantage Of Billet Compressor Wheels vs Cast is:
Lighter Weight (some cases it is heavier)
    More Room for Air Flow
More Durability (Cast Wheels can Have Air Pockets Creating Weak Spots, But Billet Wheels are machined for Solid aluminum)

Austin, I agree with you on the improved strength and flow characteristics of billet compressor wheels. After assembling the modified HE351 housing you proved me I installed the billet compressor I bought with it from you. I noticed about 5 psi of boost as compared to the stock cast compressor. Castings that are not fully polished on the blades of the compressor are much more irregular in dimension. Billet CNC, compressors are symmetrical and and consistent in thickness. To me this is a more effective higher performing option. As a side bar I’m using the 351 as the “small “ hp compressor on a twin setup paired with an S475 on my 03 5.9 Cummins with great results. I wanted to thank you, and let you know I’m referring my friends to you. Keep up the great work . Jim

I know you have probably been asked this a thousand times, but are all t3 t4 journal turbos the same. I am looking to upgrade my GT3582 with a 360 degree thrust washer.
Im pretty sure I have blowed both the compressor bearing and the exhaust bearings. I will try using a 5/8 heater hose first just to make sure im correct.
Thank you for your time and look forward to hearing from you soon, stay safe out there!!!!!
Keep the info coming!! GREAT JOB

Hey Austin, if you have 2 wheels with the same diameter and one of them has less blade count, which one would flow more at low pressure ratio ie. 20 psi and below

I'd say in the case of the 20G. The billet is better. I run your 7 blade billet 20G wheel with the 9 blade td05H turbine in a t3 configuration on my Evo 9 and it makes 540whp at 29 psi on ethanol (and I'll be turning it up even more soon this summer) :) with the slimmer nose, higher blades, and extended tips. I bet the Cast 20G won't get near that.

Does anyone know if a standard turbo will be better off with a billet wheel or is it really only when you start pushing the HP? Is there any advantage to swapping this into a stock oem setup?

If you had a cast wheel with extended tip design and the weight is similar...would results be similar with a 1000hp + set up?
Would it be just a durable?
In a 82mm turbo - comparing the Bw s482 to Gtx4508r or the BW s476 to the gtx 4202r?

Also in competition...i get a lower minimum weight 100# if i run a cast wheel turbo. 100# is great. But not if it isn't as good a turbo for track times.

23g less in the case of HX40, it should be noted the turbo filling up something earlier, right?

Billet extended tip is better for obvious reasons...More area to grab more air..and usually lighter than the cast counterpart....

1 reason why billet is ALOT better than cast that you did not mention is... Billet CNCd wheels are drawn up in CAD and use complex computer fluid dynamics modelling. And the design can be easily changed to alter the compressor characteristics, tested, redesigned, then remade better until a very efficient design is achieved. Making them actually have better aero performance. A cast wheel on the other hand is a rather lengthy process in designing and producing the cast, and making adjustments to perfect the aero is not as simply as it is with a billet wheel.
A case in point would be the Garrett GT vs GTX series of turbos. The wheels are interchangeable but the GTX is a newer better aero design than the older tech GT. And they perform differently accordingly.

And now the GTX2 which is a redesigned and improved version of the original GTX.

Um, are you aware that Computer Aided Design (CAD) has been widely used in the automotive sector since the late 70s? By the 90s, the components such as a compressor or turbine wheel were entirely designed and flow/thermo tested with computer software. So your ~30 year old TD05-16G cast impeller was, in fact, designed and modeled for fluid dynamics the same way as your nowadays billet CNCd 16G impeller upgrade.
I'm not arguing with you, I'm just saying that your first statement doesn't really make a point. It is true, however, if you're comparing an impeller completely drawn up and calculated by hand, say in the 40s for when they used them on WW2 airplanes.
Otherwise you can also get a better performing cast impeller with additional touching up and finishes.

@@Kryndon64 at last someone that talks from an engineering point of view. The truth is that a cast wheel can potentially be as good as a billet one. A serious comparison can only be done when applied into a specific turbine housing.
