Excellent beginner explanation of value or tone to create 3d effect. Using complimentary color to darken vs. Paynes gray is much more pleasing. My biggest challenge is preserving highlights if not drawn in or using masking fluid.
This was straight and to the point. Wonderful work!! I love how you explained the color wheel also. I am still spanking new at this so I am soaking up all the knowledge I can absorb. (no puns intended initially)
I thought everything was lost with me talking about watercolor. I found this tutorial and now, eventhough I made a few mistakes, I feel proud of my results.
This is a great little project and a nice tutorial. I followed along and made a decent attempt - I would suggest that perhaps in future videos you could explain where exactly you are adding the paint in the 2nd and 3rd layers (and where you aren't) and why, as that was where my attempt fell apart a bit. I wasn't entirely sure where the light vs. shadow should fall on something that had its own internal light source. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and I hope you plan to share more tutorials.
Love this idea and design! So pretty! 🤩 And the great advice about darkening the colours. But the placement of the shadows confused me as it looks like the light is coming from several different directions?? 🤔
I love it!! The fact that you used your color wheel….great reminder on how to darken your colors. I’ve missed our chats. Hope all is well with you and your four legged painting companion❤️🐾🐾❤️. I would love to see more tutorials like this….some detailed, others more quick and easy. Perhaps something that could be painted and used as a small picture or maybe used to paint on a card. You do a lot of underpainting in some of your objects, maybe something using that, or like you did with your Christmas lights. ( Which I plan to paint and use as a small picture to put around during the holidays.). Thank you so much for this great tutorial (from a great teacher!!). Please keep in touch! Nell.
I can’t wait to try this! ❤️ Mallory Jane, would you be able to start adding which brushes & paints you use in the description box? I’m a newbie, so I need a bit of help in knowing which products I need. Having it in the description box would make it easier to reference. Thank you!
Yes, I can start doing that! Here is the bursh & paints I used for this tutorial: Paint Palette: Derwent Inktense www.amazon.com/Derwent-Inktense-Paint-Pan-Palette/dp/B084Q5TMST/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3Y03G6V9C8X9&keywords=derwent%2Binktense&qid=1700766669&sprefix=derwent%2Caps%2C88&sr=8-4&th=1 Brush: Princeton Aqua Elite, Round, Size 8 www.amazon.com/Princeton-Artist-Brush-Synthetic-Watercolor/dp/B07PPT8YM5/ref=sr_1_1_pp?crid=1YRPX0SZ2T118&keywords=princeton+aqua+elite+watercolor+brushes&qid=1700766755&sprefix=princeton+%2Caps%2C90&sr=8-1
Thank you Jane.....I like Lauren 4 comments below got lost on where to add the 2nd and 3rd layers on these bulbs....could you please explain in more detail how you get the best results... many thanks...Sue
Wonderful tutorial, Mallery, thank you. I'm new to watercolor and learned so much in these short 20 minutes. I can't wait to give these bright cheery bulbs a go. Have a wonderful Christmas. 🎄
I hate that I have to turn it down so that I can't hear her. I have problems with my ears, and I absolutely can't handle her or anyone growl their voice when they talk. I don't know how to put closed caption on it. I just hope that I'm not missing important information. Please try to understand. Thanks!
I love this! I'm new at water colors....mainly greeting cards and this layering technique is exactly what I've been needing...like the depth it produces.
This is great. I just signed up for your online classes and find your instructions so easy to follow with great explanations. I learned something within the first few minutes of your watercolor 101 class, that I had wondered about. I am a newbie but enjoy your work so much.
I just watched this again and wondered if you have to leave hard edges. Would it not look right if you blended out every layer? I just have such an aversion to the hard edges. In my mind, it seems like it would be better to soften all the edges.
Thank you for explaining the layering of deepening shades and using the opposite color on the color wheel. I need to practice patience in letting things dry!
Love watching how fast you paint! Really like these lights that look so real! Looking at your video again and going to paint the same thing..just love this 😅
Absolutely fabulous! So many want a click or admirerers of work..ty for not gate-keeping but giving teaching and providing a thorough how-to. Am your new follower❣️
Oh thank you for doing this video!!👍👍it’s my first time attempting to paint family Xmas cards .i usually make my cards but thought I would make them extra special this year, love these lights they just pop out of the paper!💕💕🥰🥰❤️❤️🐶🐶🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
That was a whole lot of fun watching you paint these ornaments. I feel very comfortable in how you teach. I wish I saw this before Christmas!! But I'll practice and do them next year. Thank you for sharing with us. Can't wait to learn more from you, Mallery!!

Thank you for the step-by-step instructions I will try for sure I am new to your channel and I love what you do it's clean well explained watercolor tutorial 👌
A great lesson in complimentary shadows! I've been trying compliments as underpaintings with some success but your process seems fool-proof.. and a holiday card taboot ❣️🦙
Thank you so much! It definitely takes some practice getting the mixes right plus there’s so many blues and oranges to mix together (same with all the other colors) it can create slightly different results. I’m glad you’re trying it out and having success!
Thank you for this tutorial! I was looking for a design for a Christmas card and this is perfect.

This tutorial is exactly what needed to see today. Thank you Mallory Jane. I always love your uploads ❤
🥰🥰🥰
😮wow it amazing, I like this idea
Thank you! 😊
I might suggest making the caps and wires tree green, as most light sets do have green wires. Really nice bulbs though!!

Yes! Thank you ☺️

Thank you for this amazing advice! I never knew to add the complimentary color to darken.
You're so welcome! It’s something I use ALL the time ☺️
Thank you for a fabulous tutorial. I’m new to watercolours and any art. Please could you tell me which dryer you are using?
Welcome to watercoloring! I’m using a heat gun, I purchased mine off Amazon ☺️
@@MalleryJane Thank you

Thanks. Enjoyed watching it. Beautiful and l will try it too. ❤
Great tutorial! Thank you! I'm not as confident as you are at leaving those white highlights so I'll use a wee bit of masking fluid!! lol
Looking forward to trying this technique. Thanks for the tutorial.
I find hard edges to be difficult, too. I think they look fine when other artists do them, but when I do them, I feel like my painting looks fake.
Hard edges are tricky! I will make a future video specifically on this topic.
I just watched this again and wondered if you have to leave hard edges. Would it not look right if you blended out every layer? I just have such an aversion to the hard edges. In my mind, it seems like it would be better to soften all the edges.
Thanks for the fun video…I am new to your channel but look forward to exploring it more!!
Thank you for this great video. Wishing you a wonderful day!
What kind/brand of dryer are you using? I'm currently using a hair dryer but want to find something a little more gentle on my paintings.
Great at teaching building up color with contrasting colors! Cute little exercise that gets in my art fix for the day.
I have to tell myself to just trust the process and then I’m like oh! This is working and it’s fun❤❤❤ thank you!
Nicely done. And thanks for that info. I didn't know that you add the complimentary to make it darker.
Very nice work. Do you prefer the Derwent Inktense paint over traditional watercolor? If so, why?
Thanks Mallory! What a fun tutorial. Turned out beautifully! 😊
Thanks so much! 😊
@malleryjane Where have you been for so so long? You are the best artist on here cutting it all down for starters to understand. 🎉
I was ok until you srarted mixing colors! Total confusion!
Thank you for explaining the layering of deepening shades and using the opposite color on the color wheel. I need to practice patience in letting things dry!
This tutorial is very useful to start my watercolour painting
I love your style of painting. I can't wait to try this tutorial.

What are watercolor paint names you used to make the color wheel?
❤
Excellent lesson on understanding how to use the color wheel as a tool.
Thank you for teaching!!!🎉
