It's so crazy seeing this video. I started painting again after 20 years and started with watercolor. Every single time I paint, I ALWAYS want to detail it with pencil crayons. I actually resist the urge because I thought I wasn't supposed to.
Great! Awoke today wanting to use Aquarell & salt, am now drying & thought can we use Polychromos with Aquarell, after watching your video decided to trythis method! Thanks for your example it’s helped me give it a go!
I'd love to see more pencils over watercolour artistic examples of a wide range of subjects, if that's possible. I know that hobbyists use this combo a lot, I'm not talking about that though.

MUCH respect to Bob Ross. 20 yr. Army veteran who dedicated the rest of his life making happy accidents. He was also a babysitter. He didn't know it, but he looked after me quite a bit. I was mesmerized by the ease he put together a creation that could be enjoyed by others. In tribute to the late great Bob Ross I give most all of my work to my work to my neighbors , for a smile(I do not always like what I paint and sometimes I just sit and paint to see what happens) . Signed by me on the back with ,as always, I would give Mr. Ross a tip of the hat for being my#1(pseudo) mentor. I think that is what Bob would have appreciated. I wanted to be like Bob, but I am a sailor, born in the Caribbean so I joined the Navy instead of Army. Do you have a favorite teacher, professor speaker, or mime(eew) that you remember fondly? Well aside from my freshman English teacher Mr. Boring(yep for real) who taught the entire school how to properly use the addictive SWEET, I do not. In my perfect world Bob Ross will always have the center stage easel. To this day I have never ventured into acrylics or oil. I did, however with my daughter, paint along with his black and white gesso episode. Going over a black gesso primed canvas with white to greyscale we had an adventure in value. She totally out painted dad.
Wow ! I’ve missed your wonderful techniques lately but a fantastic one to get back to it with! I’ve been amazing cloud photos taken from my own yard so good time with the right technique to attempt some huge clouds of many colours & values. Thanks so much.
This is so timely for me. The past couple of weeks I've been trying polychromos over either tube or F-C watercolor pencils. I also want to try polychromos over F-C pastel pencils. I'm trying to think more creatively and using whatever it takes to get the results I want to get. Thank you for the inspiration and gorgeous result - as always!
Awesome! I literally mixed colored pencils with A watercolor piece I am working on last night for the first time ever! Oh my goodness, I can’t believe I’ve waited this long to try it! I remember trying out a white prisma color as a highlight when I first started using watercolors but didn’t quite like it back then and now, I think it will be mine I think it will be my new thing!! A nice creamy pencil mixes so well with watercolor, it’s phenomenal! I highly encourage anyone who hasn’t tried it yet to do so. It will not disappoint! Thank you for doing this video Steve, you always have so much great knowledge to share with all of us!😻😻😻
Watercolor, color pencils and ink paintings are one of my favorite techniques. It was nice to see you work in this style, Mr. Mitchel thank you. Pretty cool vid clip inserts, liked that.
I'm starting to work on a really big illustration due for January and this just gave me all the ideas I needed for how I'm going to handle the sky, thank you so much Steve!
You know that this is my preferred mixed media or pastels over wc. I enjoyed your example very much. I use the Caran ‘De ache water brush the one that is pointy and fibrous to hold odorless mineral spirits to blend because that is the only brand of self contained water brush and it just self cleans and takes out that bit of gritty look on cp paper. If I use pastels in areas I just use clear pastel primer with a cheap sponge brush. There is just no end to the beautiful art that can be done with so many different media. Thanks Steve for sharing ideas. I love cloud scapes.
@@percygilliam5706es and I use clear primer which is not just for pastels. However, I sorta went down a watercolour rabbit hole and haven't had my pencils out for weeks. Time to dust them off!
Loved seeing a snap shot of Bob Ross in this one Steve, lol. Lately, I’ve been doing mixed media with watercolor and prismacolor colored pencils and enjoying the results. You’re right about other artists here on UA-cam doing this. Ceecee has been doing some beautiful work lately with this technique. Thank you for sharing your techniques. Interesting. I also use colored pencils for my recent paintings, but for the initial sketch. Instead of using other regular pencils, I prefer the watercolor pencils to sketch out a landscape just to provide a ‘skeleton’ to the painting.
