It brings back nice memories when Nina Hagen was visiting NYC back in the 1990s and stopped by at the Anthology Film Archives on 2nd St/1st Ave and I took a photo with her and my friend Lisette who used to work there. I just love when she sings. It`s so expressive and full of emotions and drama that strike a chord in the deepest part of my soul. German sounds so beautiful with Nina`s voice. It helps me with learning it for sure.

    The Sailor
    Come into my boat
A storm is rising and night is falling
    Where are you going?
    All alone you're drifting off
Who's going to hold your hand
When it's pulling you down under
    Where are you going?
    The cold sea is shoreless.
    Come into my boat
The autumn wind keeps the sails taut.
Now you're standing there by the lantern
    With tears in your face
    Daylight falls aside
The autumn wind sweeps the street empty
Now you're standing there by the lantern
    Got tears in your face
Evening light chases the shadows away
Time's standing still and autumn's falling
    Come into my boat
    The longing becomes the steersman
    Come into my boat
    Wasn't I the best sailor?
Now you're standing there by the lantern
    Got tears in your face
You take your fire from the candle
Time's standing still and autumn's falling
They spoke only about your mother
    Only night is so merciless
In the end I stay alone
    Time's standing still
    And I am cold
    Cold...
    Cold...

"Now you're standing there by the lantern" (Jetzt stehst du da bei der Laterne) is a strong indicator for the topic of prostitution.
some say its about a broken relationship that drove her in to prostitution others that the person singing is in love with a prostitute und wants her to stay with him

"Harbor Hooker." Yes, that makes excellent sense. Some prostitutes operate at sea ports, and others specialize at truck stops in the USA.

Thank you very much for the translation, which is almost flawless! Only point I would criticise is the line "Der beste Seemann war doch ich!", which is not a question, but a strong argumentation. It forces the other person to remember back, and reflect at the time together. It's comparable to the question "Wasn't it a great time, when we were a couple?", but with a twist. Indicating that a sailor/captain is steering the boat, and the other person is the passenger. One is "sub", the other is "dom". I hope that you can follow my thoughts, English is not my native language 😉

    • @soerenseegert8466
      @soerenseegert8466 3 роки тому +3

For understanding the line “you take your fire from the candle” you may want to take into consideration that there is this superstition among sailors never to to take fire from a candle because it is believed that whenever someone does that a sailor dies.

I thought no one could EVER top the original; one of my absolute favorites by Rammstein, but phew, Nina made this song her own and I am mesmerized by every exaggerated facial expression she so thoughtfully uses to add a deeper meaning to the poetry that she sings in this mind-blowing rendition, and it would be a sin not to, but a given to go off on how absolutely incredible this woman is and how I could sing her praises over her vocal range and how she's made her voice her
b!tch and has proven time and time again why she is queen.
Love you, Nina. I hope your impact on the music scene, the impact you've had on today's young women and little girls brings you some feeling of reward and peace. ♡

    Come into my boat
    a storm is coming
    and it's getting dark
Where do you want to go
    so all alone
    you drift away
    Who will hold your hand
    when it pulls you down
Where do you want to go
    so endless
    the cold sea
    Come into my boat
    the autumn wind keeps
    the sails taut
Now you stand there by the lantern
    with tears on your face
the daylight falls on the side
the autumn wind sweeps the street empty
Now you stand there by the lantern
    with tears on your face
the evening light chases away the shadows
time stands still and it becomes autumn
    Come into my boat
    the longing becomes
    the helmsman
    Come into my boat
    the best seaman
    was me after all
Now you stand there by the lantern
    with tears on your face
you take the fire from the candle
time stands still and it becomes autumn
They only spoke of your mother
so merciless is only the night
in the end, I remain alone
    time stands still
    and I am cold
    cold...
    cold..

Nina Hagen is a Legend in Germany. Traditionally educated in eastern Germany, but more closely related to western punk rock. Great voice above all, and a message to it (concerning totalitarianism). You should never forget, she did all that also in a time where it could spell oblivion to take a stand against the regime .yet, she staid true to herself. I really admire her, wholeheartedly. As a west German. And not the only one. Ask the others. As to the original text: there are a lot of references to traditional German mythology, if you intend to delve into this and feel fit to do so. If you're not, well, things aren't always as easy as they may seem.
