Project "Undercover" 2003 Ford Crown Vic LX SPORT, can it be the Ultimate Sleeper???

- So as you may know I was in a Car Accident at the beginning of May and my Crown Vic was totaled.
After Months of looking I found the perfect car to make into a Sleeper! a 2003 Ford Crown Vic LX SPORT. I talk about the Mods that we are going to do and discuss how rare this car actually is.. It's one of 342 made with this color/trim option in 2003. @DavidVizard and myself plan on seeing if we can hurt some feelings along the way with Project: UNDERCOVER but we have our work cut out for us!

Hi Andy! Nice ride and nice shirt! As a recent CAW retiree, I have to point out that ALL Crown Vics and Grand Marquis from 1986 onwards were built at the St.Thomas plant. It was the Lincoln Town Car that joined them in St.Thomas when the Wixom, MI plant closed. Alas, the end of the Crown Vic was also the end of the St.Thomas plant in late 2011 after a few 2012's were built.
Thanks for setting me straight.. I have huge respect for my Brothers and Sisters to the north! Bob White was an amazing leader.. Stay tuned as we go on the journey of making the Vic into the ultimate sleeper
Andy
@UnityMotorSportsGarage the feeling is mutual, Andy! I am really looking forward to seeing this become an awesome sleeper! I'd love to see lots of horses with a quiet exhaust. I've always liked those cars and you may inspire me to find one and build something similar!
Yep many of my family members worked there
Congratulations Andy,
I have the exact same car but with 270k on it. My Marti report shows mines is one of 47. Transmission lasted to 255k miles with the aid of the J-mod and a Blue Oval Chips tune. You have an early build 03 as you have the front seat map pockets, they deleted those after January of 2003. I did following to mines so far:
1. Mercury Marauder air box and mass air flow sensor.
2. 04 and up air intake tube
3. P71 rear sway bar with polyurethane bushings.
4. Custom tune by Blue Oval Chips (no longer in business) they specialized in panther tunes and allowed the use of a MM mass air sensor.
5. J-mod for the valve body
6. P71 driveshaft as your stock shaft will have vibration concerns above 105 mph on a track.
I selected a Crown Victoria LX Sport because I wanted the P71 performance with comfort. I once managed a police fleet of 2500 cars with about half of the fleet being CV and other half Chargers. The CV were so reliable and durable, compared to the problematic Chargers.
I was planning on eventually doing a Coyote 6R80 swap, but no one has a plug and play setup for the Panther chassis. So I am glad that you are doing a 2V build, but I want to keep near stock driviability as these cars are great highway cruisers. A 6R80 would be beneficial with the steep first gear and low rpm drop between gears. US Shift has a transmission controller for 6R80 which are now plentiful. Good luck with the build as I will be watching.
I would love to find one of them . ford family sense 1924 my great grandfather had a big shop and was one of the first ford dealers in maine all of his sons and their sons were all mechanics . the shop closed in 1969 after my uncle died . when i was a young kid i started fixing anything with an engine on it and that was how i made a living i am almost 70 how and still love it . l guess it is in my gene's . today's tech just blows my away and do my best to keep up . your project on this car is going to be great .
So happy to see you back in a Vic Andy! One thing I'd like to mention about your car that you didn't in the video is, the 03 Crown Vic was the first year that Ford put the rack and pinion in the front end! Ford had already upgraded the rear end of the car in 98 to a nice 4 link with wats link. So your car is just new enough to get the best suspension and just old enough to not have electronic throttle.
DV has talked about driving road course with his mustang, you should put swaybars and shocks in the Vic and go with him! Crown Vics make great track cars even if they're a little heavy!
I am looking forward to this series. Glad you found another car after the wreck.
That is a nice sled, in great shape. And you got it at a good price! Looking forward to the modifications...
I guess a junkyard 7.3L Godzilla swap might be too much for the budget?
Ford Performance low profile intakes are now available to allow stock or close to stock hood clearance. Some other stuff also has to be changed, but that torque!
Love the channel, you build it exactly how you want.
The transmission is holding that car back as well. Swapping it for a 6r would help drastically. Sweet Ride! I had an 03 in that same color. Ended up ditching it cause all the paint started to peel off of the hood, roof and trunk. Loved that car though.
I remember the first time I saw the console shifter in the crown Vic years ago and was confused. Had to go see what kind it was. Definitely love that feature more than column shift.
I agree it makes the car feel completely different!
Thanks for watching
Andy
Oh ya she's a beaut👍I had a 97 LX that I put 270k on and besides the usual replacement of common wear items, I only had an alternator go bad at 210K. The guy I sold it to drove it for years til he slid off the road in winter and had to get rid of it. Best car I ever had
Thanks for watching! Same here.. Best Car I ever had as well
Andy
So glad you got another Panther I was waiting the this project glad it's back
I have an 06 Marquis
The suspense disign
Is amazing
I have 275s up from with 315 s on the back and the fit
Want put bars coilovers
Drive train is stock single exhaust had it 12 years
Great cars
Andy, I have an '04 as my daily driver. Black P71. Final year of throttle cable. 130K Love it! Have fun!
Ur a lucky guy to hang out with DV Andy
i own a 2011 crown vic LX myself,so im excited to see this!
That’s a unicorn for $5000! Never see that condition in the northeast.
Thanks I searched for a while before I found this one!
Andy
I have a 2000 P-71 4.6 liter car , and can't wait to put long tube headers , a larger throttle body, exhaust, then race fuel, NOS or nitro methane added fuel mixtures , carburetored , looking forward to your show to help with ideas 💡 of what is possible!!
This is definitely going to be a fun project! Thanks for watching
Andy
Always enjoy your videos with him.😊
Awesome vic. I prefer the p71 because it weighs significantly less without all the extra stuff like electronics and insulation, which I didn't want anyways. I also like the upgraded suspension and extra coolers in the p71. Its a 09 with 3.27 posi rear end, stock it logged 8.2 0-60. I performed all the usual maintenance and some upgrades: NGK platinums, Accel super coils, swapped the factory 200 amp alternator for a 155 amp alternator (the 155a has less mass and has a larger pulley by half an inch), tires, and intake plenum mod. Now my 0-60 is 7.6 and significatinly improved throttle response and drivability. My next mods are removing the rear cats, cat back exhaust (stock p71 mufflers weigh 68lbs each), custom cai, EMP water pump (requires less hp to turn while increasing water flow), change the steel police control arms for aluminum control arms and Watts link arms(saves around 45-55lbs), 5.0 stroker kit, trickflow heads, and T56 swap. Im considering a supercharger as well. These cars are ridiculously easy and fun to work on. The only down side is the price gouging. I bought my car for $8500 after negotiating it down from 12k. Granted it has low idle hours and has 79k miles, but its crazy how much the low mileage cars go for now.
The P71 weighs more but ok
If you're planning on going into the short block, be sure to bump up the compression with those heads.
I have a 03 Crown Victoria LX Sport. I gave the wheels to my son and put on 2015 Mustang GT wheels. They look like they were made for the car!
Oh don't worry my TFS heads are the 38cc versions. I should be slightly over 10.5 once it's all done
Thanks for watching
Andy
That's a sweet ride! I have the 2004 LX Sport bought it used, 13k miles in 2006 and almost 20 years later only has 120k on her. She's a Chestnut Brown Metallic with a tan interior... Sad to say but the paint started releasing from the primer so now I'm stripping her down to metal and the new PPG Chestnut Brown Metallic will go on this September, at the latest :)
Thanks! I love the LX Sport cars.. it's amazing how different the buckets and console make it feel like a different car
Andy
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage Oh Yeah! And its so dang comfortable for me at 6"4' 240! I didn't buy her for the speed :) But the look and comfort!
I love the Crown Vic. I got a 2000 new as a Deputy Sheriff and drove it 234000 miles.
Andy good for you it's a great looking car.
Thanks, I love this car.. I can't wait for it to hit Beast mode 💪
Andy
I own (2) CVS. Both '05. Silver Frost Metallic. I bought one, brand new. It is a sunroof option car. 190,000 miles.
My state police maintenance buddies say the crown vis were awesome. They also say the chargers that replaced them have been faster and less maintenance.
How was your vacation and I am glad to see you are doing well everywhere and everything.
I've had A Lincoln town car. 2002 grand Marquis and a Ford explorer. Kinda love my 4.6 motor
The 4.6 will grow on you over time! The Mini Cammer
Andy
What a good looking car!
Thanks! Thanks for watching
Andy
Nice Car! I'm on board for this...
Have you guys gone over camshafts for 2Vs? Maybe I missed it? LSA, PtV etc...
I have thought of doing this also, with that exact car being the ultimate starting point. I wanted to do a 6R80 swap though. That deep 1st would help all that mass...
Yeah I have talked about it in Live Chats but that subject will make for a good Video in the near future
Andy
@@UnityMotorSportsGarageI have a 2007 Lx premium sport it’s a FFV and fun to drive. I’ve enjoyed saving over $2.00per gallon running e85 versus non ethanol
LX Sport, nice!
I would really love to see more done with this car!
Thanks for watching! Don't worry more to come...
Andy
Went to a car show recently. Guy had a Mercury Marauder with an o3/04 terminator motor with a supercharger! 725 hp! With a t56 six speed manual!
That is super cool!
Andy
So, I had a buddy that had a 2 valve that ran Real Street--he had pistons and rods, stock crank, street self contained blower, 5 speed. He put the Trick Flow heads on it and it was a monster. I think it ran 8's without being straddled with class weight. Tim Matherly look him up. I would do a turbo to keep it quiet, jeez this thing would go 9's easy lol...
Wait, did I hear that right?!? An 11.22 second 1/8th mile? I think I can run an 11 second 1/8th mile! Wow!
Interesting series, I'm going to look for the rest of them.
I wish you well and I hope you are doing well. Great evening to you and tell David I said hello.
are you going to go for weight reduction in the future? not trying to be mean but swapping David for Andy would improve your times .lol love ya Andy. looking forward to following this project.
funny thing, my wife was a 2003 Crown vic daily driver. My daily driver is a 1990 LTD Crown Vic wagon. The frame is almost identical. The big difference is the 2003 has the big aluminum K member. My frame is incredibly similar to a 1979 LTD. You keep a good design.
station wagon? If so, station wagons have to meet extra safety items, like crush proof roof, etc. My Brother 'stole' and 'jumped' my 1974 Mercury Colony Park off the gravel pits, landed on roof, and only windshield busted, the roof did not collapse, good thing ... Station wagons always have the best brakes and stuff.
What a great vidja 🤙🏼
Thanks Dylan
Andy
Love my 99
I have always wanted one with a 5 speed and Lincoln 5.4 Dohc
that looks to be in very nice shape
David looks good in your video I was worried he might be under the weather PS any updates on the 318 build for st Jude’s
I will come to USA for business trip in future. The first thing I do once coming is to lease a "crown Vic"
I love the project
Thanks Kevin
Andy
I see your wearing a Local 5285 shirt. I am Local 959. Fayetteville,Nc. I had thought about the Trick Flow top end for my Vic. But they are 4 grand now. And the ADTR supercharger kit is 7 grand. You figure after taxes and shipping I'd be around 12 grand. And that's still a stock bottom end. That's when I decided to swap my P71. I wouldn't swap that Lx Sport. That is a great car. Lol.
That is awesome! So you work at the tire plant?
Andy
Kenny Brown blower ?
It would be a lot easier check out the motor week test of the Kenny brown panther
That is an option and we may get there.. if we do it will have to be in the stg 2 build as when I put the TFS heads on the compression ratio will be too high for a roots style blower
Thanks for watching
Andy
Yes make a sleeper car, look OEM outside and Sick power enside
I would avoid the word "Breakdown" while discussing the build sheet! BTW, I wouldn't change anything on it. It would be my daily driver just as is....🛒
Eventually with those upgrades your are going to find the limits on that automatic. Any thought to converting to a five or speed manual? Then yo could regain lower highway revs with deeper overdrive.
Nice car! Can you give tips and tricks for porting 2V PI heads for us tighter budget viewers?
Ben Alameda has a nice video on porting the factory intake / throttle body,,, (one of the 2 or both)wich had an airflow flaw from the factory.
I know im not being specific about wich part it was. Cant remember,,,
Yet it produced
20 REAR wheel HP and Torque.
Id share the link if i knew how.
Thanks! I've watched that video... He is really good
Andy
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage Good Guy , sharing good knowledge, just like Yourself and Mr Vizard.
Always appreciate your videos.
Thank you.
@ptwccrider thanks for the kind words!! I'm glad you enjoy the content
Andy
I took a look online to see if I could find one for sale (West of Interstate 35)… nothing available that wasn’t butchered, modified or worn out.
$5K for that LX? That's a deal that's so smoking I'm coughing and my eyes are watering! I'm happy you got it though Andy!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
A 4.10 gear, headers, and a tune to work with it could do wonders!
First thought when I saw this video pop up was its getting compression, cams and TFS heads lol.
the roush supercharger is the only way to go on these
Those Roush superchargers make for some great torque
Andy
Andy I got two of them 4.3 out of a 9 93 Lincoln Mark 8 ones in the car running and ones in the garage complete are you interested in them
Mark send me an email @ tunnelram393w@gmail.com!
Thanks
Andy
I'm a Coyote guy, but thanks for your videos.
Thanks for watching! I love the Coyotes as well...
Andy
Nice deal 😎
.3/10 of a second for you two. Will be there at the fall time
Wow that car is gorgeous. That is my favorite Vic as well. But I have a 03' P71 from Miami. Cause it's a P71, I am doing a Ls3/6L80. I am also going to buy a Civilian model like that one and just make her new again.
P71's are a special ride! You are going to have a screamer once done!
Andy
Did u see the Ardun OHV converted flathead that makes 723hp? The vid was in my feed today.
Your second run without David you left the A/C on I just realized. I have a 2010 CVPI I recently bought and the # spark plug (previously fix with an insert) came out. I have a line on a pair of complete Mustang GT PI heads.....any idea if the cams would be the same or different from a police interceptor motor? I am new to the modular motor scene. Thanks
My 4.6 95 grand Marquis with 220,000 miles is faster than that. Check your catalytic converters, muffler, fuel filter, and air filter. Something is slowing it down
Same for my ‘95 LX. They also are 400Lbs lighter and this might be big part of the equation ;)
I'd say skip the NOS add procharger or turbo and just jump into the 9's
I used to run 11.0 with a 3.42 rear end, in the Quarter mile
10.99? You’ll be faster than that!
We shall see! It will be fun finding out lol
Thanks for watching Jeff
Andy
I cut the floor and trunk pans it was a bear to cut up
Frame hase 4 inches of flev
Off the body 70 Chevelle 2 ft
Check out the crash test
Concrete stops at firewall
So glad you didn't say VIN number. Lol
Interested in buying been looking for a clean vic where are you located ?
I'm near Charlotte NC.

Hey man, I know you are friends with Mr. Vizard, I was curious if I could get the cam specs for the 347 SBF build him and Mervyn did for Mototrend! I will purchase the cam through him if necessary! It was a solid roller Comp Cam, any info would be appreciated!
What mileage you have on the car, ? I was planning to buy one. Really confused how long does the engine lasts ?
The only missing is a tach tho.
Don't worry it will have a Tach! Thanks for watching

I've got a pristine 2011 LX Sport, ice blue metallic with oyster leather, and exterior chrome treatments. I am having fun 'upgrading' it. I would like to get a "Marty Report". Could you reply with some info in that, please. Thanks a million.

Polish it, and leave it alone. You want to go fast, get a Mustang. This car is a cruiser, and bitchen just the way it sits.
Replace the plastic intake manifold immediately.
The 02 and up had the upgraded manifold with the aluminum crossover
if you yank that boat anchor of a mod motor out of it, stuff a healthy 351w-460 or at least a LS in it, then yea it might run good enough to be a sleeper. yea those mod motors can be made to run but its usually a exercise in futility and you better have deep pockets.
Nah, The 2V will help with the sleeper status... Because nobody expects them to run!
Andy
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage you better have deep pockets to raise any eyebrows. I get what you are tryin to do but its already been tried, gave up on or achieved until the motor popped. good luck
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage Amen brother, the mighty 2v can perform.. Satan always looking to ruin a Ford with a yucky ls..lol i just put 38cc heads n MHS stage 3 n/a TFS cams on my 09 P71.. Just need to tune it now, oh, n a 3200 stall converter that i bought already is on it's way..
You don't need deep pockets to make a 2V live and run hard... You just need to know where to spend the right money... Btw We've been 8's in the 1/4 with a 2V on Nitrous and it wasn't an expensive build
Andy
That will wake it up! I have 38cc heads as well.. You should check out my Trickflow head vid...

I would never buy any police interceptor, it’s just a stupid gamble if you ask me. You don’t know the hell that car has already been through.
I'm working on something VERY similar. I have a Marquis that my son crashed (still drivable but, ugly) and I have a 2011 Vic that was a K-9 unit with a blown motor.
I'm taking the interior from the Marquis and putting it in the K-9 and then my 6.0 LS with a 4L80... I know... It's not a Ford... But I intend to keep it quiet...
I call it my "Racing Couch"
Quiet makes for a Deadly sleeper! It should be a runner with a 6.0
