He's frantically sawing at the wheel to make corner. Overtaking was hard for everyone there. The only reason i feel that Lando ended up so high is that he started on the Hard tire and just outlasted everyone that was on the medium. Lewis started on the medium which wasn't a particularly good race tire and went to the hard. I think he deserved a 6 for the weekend. He was there or there abouts until they did the engine change. I suspect if he starts up where he qualified, he'd have been either on the podium or just barely behind George. He has been the better driver for race pace for quite a while now.

@@Joshw93 I disagree, that 5 was horrendous. Mercedes was the 4th fastest car on racepace, McLaren 1st, Ferrari 2nd, Redbull 3rd and Mercedes 4th. Yes Lewis did not have a good race at all, but there are a few reasons for that. 1st he started from the pitlane, 2nd he had that "experimental" setup. The new setup was harsh on the tires causing excessive thermal degrading, which means the tires getting slower due to increase in internal core temperature. This means a tyre can have plenty of rubber left on it, but the lap times still drop off over time, this was even reported by Lando's engineer. Lewis had drive in a certain way to keep this effect in check and he even complained to Bono about it. 3rd They put him on the mediums which was a worse tire than hards and we can see how well it worked for Lando since he was able to overtake many cars and he went long which was the better strategy. Also what Matt and Tommy said he should have beaten formula B either way, Lando spent almost half the race behind the 2 Williams and he had the fastest car. Lewis had the 4th fastest car, with a shady setup, started from the pitlane and tbh both the Williams were fairly quick in Baku (especially since they now have 2 competent drivers). Anyway rant over, Lewis deserved a 7 in my opinion. He didn't do any thing exceptional I agree but it wasn't a bad performance, it was a pretty decent recovery drive.

If this experimental setup had worked for lewis and he finished really high up everyone would be saying he's a genius so its fair to lean the other way considering the end result.

SUGGESTION for IMPROVEMENT: I think this would be more interesting from a ratings perspective if you "Force Rank" the drivers. In this system, you would give out Qty 2 of each rating. Example you would be required to give out: (2) 1s, (2) 2s, (2) 3s, (2) 4s ... etc. (20 9's, (2) 10's
    Reason:
Statistically speaking, "Half of all drivers are below average in any given race." which means 1/2 of all drivers should receive a 5 or lower and 1/2 a 6 or higher. A force rank system compares all the drivers to each other and places them in order of best drives to least good drives.
Your current distributions are WAY too top heavy; awarding only (5) drivers (25%) a 5 or lower, awarding 25% of the field an 8, nearly another 25% of the field a 9 leaving your distributions skewed in a way that just can't be correct. What you are effectively saying with the current distribution is that over 60% of the field was "superior", 25%, was average and 15% had a poor drive.
    Observation:
    1) I think that there is a predisposition to ranking forgettable drives as a 5.
    2) You are also ranking drivers high that don't finish races. No drive should be considered amazing when a driver doesn't finish. The basis of racing is to cross the finish line. If you drive in 1st place the entire race with a crap car but crash on the last lap... that is a bad race, even if it isn't your fault. As a driver you are in the wrong place at the wrong time and you get paid millions to not be there.
    Proposed approach:
Take the team ranking for a driver (Example: 5th place for the team in this example) The car driver combo would be expected to finish 10th & 11th. If a driver finishes 10th the BEST score they should get is a 5. That is an average drive for that car. If they finish above, they should be rewarded but still force ranked.
Just my 2 cents. Love the show, like what you're doing, but your rankings make no sense to me. They are producing statistically improbable outcomes week after week.

Talk about not watching the race the amount of correction Lewis had to do on that car, almost any other driver would have been in the wall. Lando went up 11 places in the fastest car and gets and 8, Lewis went up 10 places and gets a 5. Yr bias is showing. Perez and Sainz didn't score any points, were not smart enough to avoid the incident and got an 8. SMH

Nah don’t bin off driver ratings! When I miss the race (which is quite often these days) it’s actually one of the best bits of informative content out there! Race reviews can only be so long and tend to focus on the most talked about points, similar to the F1 highlights. Having a driver by driver breakdown of the race provides a really clear picture of what happened, so I’m eternally grateful for these! Please don’t stop!

Nine for Alonso is ridiculous. The fact that he got any points was pure luck. He was actually slower than Stroll in Q1 and would have been eliminated in that session if not for Norris' "yellow flag" issue. Even Alonso couldn't explain his improvement in Q2, so again it was pure luck. Then he received a lucky grid place bump due to Hamilton starting from the pit lane. In the race, he was gifted two places due to the Sainz-Perez crash, Yet, he finished 8 seconds behind a struggling Verstappen and finished 49 seconds behind a driver who started 8 places behind him. It was a case where Alonso looked good because he was the driver that benefited the most from the combined misfortune of Norris, Hamilton, Perez and Sainz. In my opinion, his actual drive was pretty mediocre, more like a six.

I find it difficult to use the comparison between start and finish positions as an absolute metric when Sainz and Perez crashed out. Yeah, it's the nature of motorsport, but Bearman starting 10th finishing 10th could be argued that that doesn't happen without the Sainz/Perez incident; it's relative. Bearman has a bright future, but I think additional perspective is necessary.
E.g. using that reasoning for Bottas but not Bearman.

That 5 for Lewis was horrendous. No hate to you guys I absolutely love your content but I just felt like I had to point this out.

Then he slows down parez making piastris win easier. Not saying lando won ocser that racebut he did help. He then pushes Russell in to verstappens race. Gaps both with two seconds and then beats max on track with no safety car help. He does get two free positions but I don't see what he can have done better. Jesus I sound like a Norris fan
