Conquer the Heights: Challenging Hike in Thailand
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- Khao Iko (Ego Mountain) is the highest mountain in Phetchaburi Province, Thailand. Recently a basic trail to the top with ropes and ladders for assistance has been created. It is the vision of a Monk who lives at the beautiful and mysterious Wat Puang Malai Temple which nestles in the imposing shadow of the mountain.
In this video I hike to the top via this newly laid out trail and show you exactly what is involved. Khao Iko is just off of the main road from Bangkok to Hua Hin and can be done in about 4 or 5 hours return. The trail begins and ends at the Wat Puang Malai and your car can be parked within the Tempme grounds for free.

That drone footage at the end was absolutely stunning. Thank you 👍🏻
My pleasure Andrew. Cheers
Wow Karl- you totally are fit to have made the climb & come back in one piece:)
Actually Marietta I certainly felt it on the way down and was so touched by the Monk giving us cold drinks when we reached the bottom. Thanks
Nice one Karl, cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks tkilla
Nice one Karl
Thank you dridekker
Great video! Holding your cameras creates quite a challenge.
Yes it does Rick. The thing is I don’t like to use chest or head mounts, I prefer to frame the shot as much as possible but that sometimes equivalent to making your life harder than need be. Cheers
Wow, now thats what i call a challenging hike, well done to the both of you Karl. Getting down i would imagine to be just or even more challenging !!!
Thanks Cliff. Yes, I really suffered on the way down, thought it would never end tbh.
Bravo mate, challenging one man's thoughts of going erect in Thailand! "ropes optional"😂 Theirs no holding you're channel back! just needing a wing suit suitable for age in your size to avoid these time consuming arduous journey down, work on human drone footage while yr still young is my best advice🤣👍👍
A wing suit…now there’s an idea 😂
stunning drone footage, thanks Karl for taking us there
My pleasure Peter. Cheers
thanks for taking us along.
My pleasure Pete. Cheers
Wow, that rock looks sharp. Another armchair climb for myself completed. Those views are immense. Well worth the climb.
Great video.
The opening music……Come Undone by DD?
Hello Karl. You know I am a big fan of you. But may be your profile pic with this strong background color makes possibly new subscribers think you are more interested in nuds than nature. Just an idea. All the best for you+your channel!
Go on then, just for you lol
@@karlsthailand ... Thank you my hero. When I reach the tempel I will bring to energy drinks and greed them and tell them "from Karl" ;)
mental or what lol xxx
brilliant karl xxx
On google maps are only five recessions to be found about that mountain... looks like only very few made it up there. Kudos. Very nice pictures
... I'm going to give my best and try to reach that peak with Tilak and enjoy that stunning view up there
@_Alfa.Bravo_ I can guarantee that it will be a solid test of any relationship. Have fun!
@@karlsthailand ... she loves temples, so I am glad there is one on top. Amor vincit omnia
Absolutely incredible mate Thanks you for The incredible views
My pleasure Nigel. Cheers
I thought climbing Khao No was challenging but this one....well done Karl!👍
Khao No is great, exciting, great views, relatively easy route up and not too long. This one is definitely more of a challenge. Thanks
Absolutely fantastic scenery my friend
Many thanks. It was a bit misty but you are right. Cheers
Wow what a 🧗♀️, Odin recommended your site, Even Mountain Goat 🐐 Nann didn’t climb up with you guys. Respect
Cheers, that was a tough one in the heat
Well done boys, but ugh what a climb. The rocks looked really sharp. You probably feel quite satisfied after such a climb
The rocks are extremely sharp Anders, I hate the stuff tbh. Actually getting down was tougher for me on this one lol. Cheers
Wow, awesome again, that was definitely more like mountaineering, than hiking
It certainly felt that way Paul. For some reason Brian thought it was going to be an easy one lol….until he saw it! Cheers
Only 50 metres to go Karl😂😂😂 absolutely stunning drone views Karl.
Shout out to the person who lugged up the aluminium ladder found @ 09.30.... a beautiful unsung comrade ❤
@@radleysmith7528 Shout out to the Thai Sherpa dragged all the water up to the very top.
Yeah lol. Only 50m indeed! Cheers
For sure Radley, so much voluntary love and sweat lies behind these places.
Indeed, water is heavy stuff
I have put this video forward to the Oscar Nominations Committee...No reply as yet. Perhaps if we suggest Yul Brynner plays Karl. What do you think? Perhaps a few More trips to the gym might help. I don't think Tom Cruise could hack it. We'd need a body dual.😅
Yup Brynner? Ex King of Thailand ? I’m honoured lol. Cheers
Unreal. Absolute YT gold, this is.. Karl, you are a legend
Thank you so much for that
Mercy! That trail was straight up. Thanks for sharing.
It was one steep trail for sure. My pleasure. Cheers
Excellent video Karl. Rather you than me, up the effing hill! And you are older than me... Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do Tony. If it makes you feel better I suffered coming down from this one. The descent seemed to go on forever. Bless that monk who gave us the cold drinks when we got back down
Hi mate lucky you have a wing man with you , that is some climb . The view and drone footage fantastic, you do make great videos mate 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much. Yes, I usually prefer to have a friend along even if it’s not always possible
Wow, mighty impressive Karl !
Many thanks! Cheers
Looks like a proper agricultural climb mate. Well done in that heat and with one hand (other filming)!
Heading back from Peru today….had some serious trekking there too, think you’d love it.
All the best for 2024, Neil
Sounds great Neil. Who knows, if interest in my chaneel grows enough I might rename it Karl's Planet lol. Peru looked amazing from your pictures Neil. Cheers
Impressive stuff lads! Is there a reason you wear black, Karl? White or yellow would cool you down a lot more.
I just like black, I guess it covers the dirt pretty well too. It's become a bit of a uniform for me though hasn't it lol
Karl, when they say 50 meters, they meant 50 meters elevation 😂. Great video!
Yes, often it works that way but even on that principle they still called it short lol. Cheers
Great video, I sub to both your channels. Do you think it would be safe enough to do this hike solo? don't think my wife would be up for a climb like this.
At weekends you would almost certainly have other people hiking it too, midweek and it could be a bit lonely. I'd check my previous videos for a hike more appealing to others tbh. Cheers
I've long since stopped asking people for directions or distances there Karl. I don't think they like to admit they don't know. so just give you any old nonsense! I've been on all sorts of wild goose chases lol...That was a nice tough one, more like rock climbing than hiking. Great work Karl.
It’s a hiking thing Mark rather than a general directions thing. I think it’s that they always like to encourage you so they always tell you it’s not far but I think most Westerners would rather hear the truth when they ask. It’s the same with Chinese culture where they won’t tell you if they are not happy with something and you have to wait until later to find out yourself. Cheers
Excellent video Karl - keeping fit it seems
I try Ian, cheers mate, hope you are well
Hard climb well it's snowing here in arkansas USA wish I was with you or maybe not lol
I suffered on the way down Jason and I've certainly had easier adventures lol. Enjoy Arkansas, cheers
Love the drone stuff mate, I am taking tips ready for Umpang 😂
It’s one place on my list for future Karl’s Thailand visits. It’s been about 7 years since my last visit. Wear camouflage and go stealth, remember if you ask the answer will be no lol. Can’t wait to see your footage Nick
That you both made it up that long of a vertical is a great accomplishment. I hope that you were able to massage those sore muscles afterwards!
We camped out that night on a beach, no massage I'm afraid but we did have a couple of beers. Then we did another, easier hike the next day (video coming up soon). Cheers
cheers to you and brian on this latest monumental accomplishment. your comment about the old structure makes me wonder why there is no plaque or sign describing history of early climbers. maybe because it is not a national park? i would be willing to contribute financial resources to get a marker up there. but in no way would the offer mean you’d have to return to the top to display it.
Donald. There are so many places like this in Thailand. I think the Thai/ Buddhist outlook is that helping to make these monuments is an act of บุญ (merit), the rewards of which come when the person is reborn. Plus they probably have no idea who created it or participated presumably a long time ago. I’d be happy to return there some day
Wow ! Is it OK to camp up there overnight ya think ?
I should imagine it would be no problem at all. I'm not sure if anyone 'owns' the mountain as such but the trail has been developed by the Temple below and my experience has always been that they are very happy to let people enjoy these places.
what a climb! in vegas we call that a scramble. that's a class 4. class 5 is rock climbing. nice work.
Yes, it's definitely a scramble in places. Cheers Vince
Think we ready for another live qanda
You could be right. Perhaps when I reach 10,000 subs which hopefully won't be long now
Wow! Amazing that Karl 👏
Thanks so much
I like your video and linked it in a drone video about Khao Iko, I made last year.
BUT I don't like the remark about Thai people. It makes YOU look “small”.
Thanks for the link. I can’t recall any derogatory comments about “Thai People” unless you mean when I commented that in my experience they if you ask them how far to go they have a habit of saying “not far” to encourage you that I personally find annoying? Is that what you are referring to?
@@karlsthailand go to 1:22 and listen
This hike is exactly what I would like to do often as a training alternative to a Stairmaster, or Stair climber routine in a typical gym. Talk about Zone 2 cardio, VO2 max, and lactate tolerance! This is superb. I am not sure I would disturb the water bottles in the shrine however, because the spirits that reside in the abode may be upset, unless another form of offering was given, or permission was granted by them. What are your feelings on the spirits that you encounter on your treks? It seems so far that they welcome you. Cheers mate.
Thanks Marc. I never actually took any of the water but in all honesty I wouldn’t have hesitated if I had needed to. I do understand the principle of them being offered as Buddhist gifts but feel sure that nobody would take offence if the offerings were used by others in a serious situation. It’s a tough hike up and for me going down was even harder. Cheers
Amazing climb Karl and Brian! I want to know, how did those ladders get so high up the summit? Did somebody hump those up there or dropped off by helicopter? Karl, very beautiful drone footage -- incredible views. Congrats, you're just shy of the 10K subs. Cheers!
Thanks Gator. Yes, as with most of these routes a lot of hard and usually voluntary works goes on in the background. The Monk in the video at the end wants to develop and promote this hike to hardy tourists. Yes, getting close to 10,000 subs now. Whodda thunk it? Lol. Cheers
Wonderfull
Thank you! Cheers!
900m in Thai climate is not to be sniffed at! That’s 3x the height of Khao Nor or like ascending Helvellyn in the Peaks straight up!!! Thanks for the vid can’t wait to try it when fit again.
I tell you what David, I really felt it on the way down. Because of the terrain you can't relax for a second so no going into auto-pilot mode. As I said in the video I had often viewed Khao Iko with awe and once even enquired about a route up a few years ago only to be told there wasn't one (which was a common response at the time)
@@karlsthailand it’s a super find and will now be my go to hike from BKK. Yes the descent must be far more dangerous and like you say no real reprieve when on the move… brutal! But a better option than Khao Wong Prachan in Lopburi which is always littered and the forest trail is horribly burnt with a lack of oxygen. Legendary stuff mate!
Awesome Karl, i took a 5 day motorcycle trip last week around Kaeng Krachan stayed on the river and mooched around the National park. Absolutely loved the area and province! Was only going for 2 nights and stayed 5 lol. Awesome video again! That was one steep climb!!
Cheers Mark. Yes, it's a great area to explore and most places a re relatively tourist free too!
was def tourist free lol 🙂@@karlsthailand
New channel name “ Karl’s brutal Thailand “
Lol. I like it but the only problem with that is that it would leave people disappointed when I put out a non-brutal video . Cheers
Then those episodes would be called “ killing you softly”
Quality climb Karl I think me and Anthony got off lightly haha
It was very close to our first destination on our trip and I never suggested it because I knew it would end the trip before it had even begun lol. Cheers
@@karlsthailand haha maybe Anthony planning another trip if your available
Entertaining as always Karl , kudos to you
Thanks so much pb
