The Japanese trailer made it look way better. Showed off more of the dynamic animation in the action shots which is mostly why I watch animated movies.
Dominic Monaghan has gotten a really gravelly voice since his role as Merry. You can hear it in recent interviews. So him coming back to do an orc voice would make sense.
It's so interesting how different this one is! I hope that they'll release this one in English because it seems to feature the different characters a little more equally. I don't have a problem with them asking the question of what Hera was doing while this conflict was happening over someone asking for her hand, but as a female myself I'd actually rather see the characters, male and female, acting as a team instead of it all falling on one person because girl power, or no one else is competent enough to do the thing but her. Good people coming together as a team to defeat darkness is one of the big reasons I love Tolkien in the first place.
This one is substantially better than the English one imo. It's not spoiling too much and focuses on everyone involved. While the English one gives the necessary background for the War, this one focuses more on what happens in the film overall, balancing characters involved through the whole thing. I am not ashamed to say that this film has got me excited, but I am cautiously optimistic.
The shot where she looks like she's wearing short shorts with the wall in the background, those are riding leggings or boot tops. The drawing makes them too tight in the knee-because- it's anime, they do stuff like that. If that was meant to be flesh the color would match her hands and no line up the centre. The green and gold things are shin guards.
It's not just anime pretty much a lot of general drawings tend to make clothing perfect to body that's why they look good but that's not always entirely on reality unless you made custom made outfit but she's royalty anyway so it's possible
That's why they should had her in a tunic with a belt like how they actually dressed. The shirts always covered the rear and even the chain mail was far enough down to cover the body. I hate the outfit, it doesn't fit with the world or style. Her other 2, perfectly fine. Anime got a little too carried away, this is the West not the East lol

Big agree. I'm rooting for this one to do well because there are so many great LOTR stories you can tell with animation. Animated Fall of Gondolin would be so epic for example. You could build up a huge cache of animated LOTR stories from the Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales and use it as a base to maybe build up to live action features at some point
I'm really angry about all those blind "girl boss" criticism which doesn't try to understand the background of the film making. Japanese studios like Ghibli has been producing strong likable female figures that differs them from the unlikable Mary Sue, even Hera's voice actor said her character is going to resemble the female protagonist in Valley of the Wind. I don't think that the story of Helm Hammerhand is going to be cut because of having a female lead. Eowyn's story doesn't cut out Theodens' too. It's just that we often see Theoden's narrative through Eowyn's lens (and Aragorn in The Two Towers) I suppose this is what happen to Hera and Helm too.
Helms story isnt what I am worried about personally, its Frealafs. I can already see Hera being the one to kill Wulf and save Rohan, wouldnt shock me if they made her queen aswell.
Lets say you want to make pizza from scratch. But instead of cooking the pizza in an oven, you put it in the freezer. Sure the ingredients are the same, but the pizza will be hard to eat wont taste good. Its the same with this, follow the recipe (story) or leave it be. A good story is good because of how its written, not how its made for "modern audiences"
There are probably a lot of fair critiques to be made about the trailer, and possibly the film at large, but I am still really excited to be getting a Middle Earth story with a female protagonist. I appreciate any story told from the perspective of an often overlooked female character; it can add an intriguing new dimension to the story. I hope her story, and the story of Helm Hammerhand that this is based off of, are done justice. The animation looks really cool, to me. The style definitely reminds me of the Castlevania series on Netflix, which I enjoyed very much-both visually and story-wise. I’m really happy to see more LOTR content. Call me complacent, but I welcome anything fresh and *new* to the Tolkien/Middle Earth Universe scene
I gotta say, I was really excited for this until I found out it's about Helm's strong courageous independent daughter and not Helm himself. I don't mind strong female characters but when it's appropriate to the story. Don't make a Batman movie that focuses on how courageous Alfred is. But I don't want to poison the well. I'll still see it and pass judgment afterwards.
from the Tolkien Curmudgeon: Nice breakdown, Nerd. This trailer seems better than the first one to me. I feel like there is a possibility I may like this film, but of course who knows. After watching both trailers I am disappointed with several aspects, however. I really don't like the form-fitting costume which makes Hera look almost like a character out of "Soul Caliber" or something. Oh well, I guess some concessions to the style of this kind of film are unavoidable. I also think that the low "frame rate" (or "in-between" frequency) , typical for a lot of Japanese animation, seems irritatingly noticeable, especially when juxtaposed, as it is here, with live-action from Jackson's films. But the thing I like least has got to be the lack of seamlessness in combining many CGI elements with drawn characters. This is especially disconcerting considering the artistic triumph in combining 2D and 3D elements of some recent Japanese animated films such as the visually stunning "Belle: The Dragon and The Freckled Princess".
Well, I don't know how much LOTR was a success in Japan back in the day (I do know that Karl Urban and Viggo Mortense went there to promote the movie). I believe it's SOMEHOW remembered, as there there is SOME merchandise around there. But I know that Japanese are usually not really engaged in western stuff (a children's anime has more tickets sold than an Avengers movie). So that's why I think the scenes from the movies are less from Rohan, more "iconic" LOTR moments, like Frodo putting in the ring by accident in the Prancing Pony, to be stronger in evoking that memory from fans. Also, from an anime perspective, it makes sense that the trailer shows more action cuts.
The creature in the end is most definitely voiced by Dom Monaghan. In the german dubbed version of the trailer you can clearly hear the same person speaking who dubbed Merry in LotR.
3:29 (spoiler warning for the story) Helm's sons don't both die at the Súthburg. His eldest son, Haleth, dies at Edoras, and likely the shots of him fighting there are before his death, and his death is the reason Héra and Háma aren't with him in the shots of them at Edoras
For those that use Eowyn to back up Hera being the lead, I have 2 objections. 1: The books never made Eowyn out to be more special than every other man in the army. All focus is on Theodin during that part. The traliers seem to imply that Hera will be more important than most other men. 2. Eowyn was never portrayed as being more powerful than the men. She only beat the Witch King because Merry made him vulnerable. Hera can talk to the Eagles, is the fastest rider in Rohan, and tells Wulf that you should be afraid of me. That doesn't mean a female character can't play a large role and not hog the spotlight at the same time. Shiek from Ocarina of Time and Tetra from The Wind Waker, (both Zelda games, as in, a game series made by a JAPANESE company), are prime examples of this.
So I'm not sure if we have even seen Frealaf in either trailer, which really makes me worried that Jackson has somehow managed to convince the Tolkien estate to let him cut Frealaf completely and make Hera the big hero of this story and make her queen at the end, and because she is a daughter they can use that for the second line of kings. I really, REALLY hope this isnt the case.
I bet Helm Hammerhand will be dead within 30 minutes. The most badass character with a story consistently topping charts as most desirable adaptation. In his place, a character that even Tolkien let remain nameless and story-less.
Also it looks like Helm will not be dying his awesome death alone. The nameless story-less character is shoved into his death scene. Tells her to go as he stays fighting. Usual trope.
That scene with Hera wearing leggings would’ve looked cooler if they were baggy parachute style pants tucked into those shin guards, perhaps even with concealed weapons in there. I wish they’d gone that route instead.
I’m worried for Frealaf in this movie as he is the one who rallies the scattered Rohirrim to relieve the siege and kills Wulf plus succeed Helm as King of Rohan. I haven’t seen him in both trailers.
Kenji Kamiyama is a great pick to direct this girlboss anime adaptation of a Tolkien story. However, I cannot ignore how its a film but the animation quality is just your typical big budget anime series level. Ive seen anime series trailers with better animation quality than this. I'm guessing its just gonna be on par with the animation studio's last anime series, Shenmue, in terms of animation polish.
Nooo, why people like u do this? Like, this looks like Netflix or the very cheap shōunen. It's like saying renaissance painting looks like 18th century painting, although I can't really say this I would be fair to compare it to good paintings, more like graffiti compared to a painting. This has nothing to do with Ghibli in any sense.
Remind? They were just pumping member berries like there's no tomorrow. Until we see the whole moving picture, my best guess will be they're totally going off the rails fan fiction style and will not be true to the source material, just fandom harvesting😢
I was much more critical of the English trailer, I am going to watch because I will enjoy aspects of the movie, but I'm still let down by the animation style and a few other things.
Look at that orcs left hand at the end of the trailer. There's a scar lookin thing? Could it possibly be Sauron? There's that one theory of how he made the one Ring.
If you guys remember, helm took his ring off and it seemed like he gave it to someone in the first trailer. Then it showed his son and another person who wasn’t his son. Many are assuming that person was freolaf…yes I butchered his name.
I always find it difficult to be immersed in an anime film when the VO is in English and not the native Japanese, so this trailer worked better for me, as weird as that is in the larger LOTR context where English is the more natural choice of language!
Nobody mentions that the white dress could mean that Hera escapes from her wedding? Btw, I would prefer the Aragorn's travels show made an anime like this than real action.
This doesn't look bad at all. It was really cool to see Saruman and I'm interested in who will be succeeding Sir Christopher Lee, both Japanese and English.
This seems unrelated but would be awesome to see Captain Rohan in multiversus since that WB studios. Would be a nice tie in for people and gamers. Like look a character from a lotr movie is in our game so play our game or watch the movie to see the character. Just a thought
The animation style in anime is not the best look for me, I believe it to be a cheap and easy way in and out without worrying a out challenges. For a great lore such as Tolkien's a new and hand drawn animation style should have been created specific to the lore alone.
@@plasticbag5508 You're the type of person who does not like people to say what they think of a art work, like they need to be artists to know how to judge a artwork. This type of toxicity creates cults around content creators as if they were gods. It's a opinion learn to go to bed knowing you're not the only person in the world.
Honestly, I am really looking forward to this film now. I was a little unsure at first, you can never be to careful with spinoffs after all, but this looks like it's shaping up to be something special. I really hope we get more movies like this, which just tell some more of the smaller myths of Tolkien's world. I really have been enjoying Rings of Power, but it's scale is it's biggest weakness. It's tackling hundreds, if not thousands of years worth of lore, while also having the Sisyphean task to make a digestible series. This story is a lot more personal, and I think that the changes in time scales will likely be as unnoticeable as the PJ movies' timescale changes were. Fingers crossed!
Yea, the tight outfit she wears is a red flag, it's too eastern anime, not western tolkien. That's just not how a shield maiden would have dressed, the outfit belongs in a different anime like Captain Harlock where they are pirates in space ships, not on a European horse Lord's daughter. It's Tolkien, i cannot give an inch because we've seen them take miles.
I suspect based on these trailers they are probably going to clip Fréaláf out and have Hera do the stuff he does in the book. That makes alot of narrative sense given that if you are going to greatly expand Helm’s daughter into an actual character, Fréaláf becomes kind of redundant.
so...remove or change a character that Tolkien itself wrote and who became the next King to replace him with an OG character ? Sounds like modern Hollywood for me.
Replacement girl boss story continues. Rey of the LOTR universe incoming. I find it funny they feminized the American version so much more than the Japanese. Keep being socially conditioned guys/they/them.
Both the English and Japanese trailers look awesome, though I think the English trailer did a better job capturing the core of the story: Freca asks Helm to let Wulf marry his daughter, she refuses, Freca challenges Helm to a fistfight, ending in his death. This leads to war. Though the Japanese trailer did include Helm in the winter, fighting a troll, and Saruman's appearance.
I like anime, it’s a great art form and there’s exceptional material around, but I’m not thrilled about anime style LOTR stories. To me personally it just feels awkward. I don’t think I’ll become a fan. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt though..
Wild idea, but the snow troll seems to have a beard - maybe this is a scene playing out in Helm's subconscious, and the snow troll is his dark side filled with rage?
While this trailer looks much better than the english one and seems to focus more on Helm and his sons, I fear this might just be a bait and switch for japanese viewers. I think the english trailer is more honest about who this story is really about. Which is neither Helm nor his sons nor his nephew and heir, but his nameless daughter instead.
your channel fills the house with middle earth lore. I thank you good sir.

Eöwyn beheaded a Fellbeast just before, to me that's pretty strong, as even her blade wasn't described as particularly magical or powerful
He's in the other one but he looks like wulf
@@jessmith7324 So he doesn’t have blonde hair? Great.
He’s been cast, so definitely not cut
Maybe they will have Fréaláf pull an Ar-Pharazon on her and usurp the throne and seize the Sceptre. 😂😆🤣
@@Enerdhil Would not shock me at all

💀 weird

I bet Helm Hammerhand will be dead within 30 minutes. The most badass character with a story consistently topping charts as most desirable adaptation. In his place, a character that even Tolkien let remain nameless and story-less.
Also it looks like Helm will not be dying his awesome death alone. The nameless story-less character is shoved into his death scene. Tells her to go as he stays fighting. Usual trope.
I will miss Christopher Lee!
That scene with Hera wearing leggings would’ve looked cooler if they were baggy parachute style pants tucked into those shin guards, perhaps even with concealed weapons in there. I wish they’d gone that route instead.
i love that saruman looks like christopher lee
Hey Matt! I'll see Dom in October and I'll have to ask him if he is the 'voice over.' Thanks for the heads' up!
Maybe he had to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Probably not, but it is possible he won't be able to tell you.
I love to see Samurai animation
I’m worried for Frealaf in this movie as he is the one who rallies the scattered Rohirrim to relieve the siege and kills Wulf plus succeed Helm as King of Rohan. I haven’t seen him in both trailers.
8:50 where did you find this artwork? That looks great.
I don’t know but I want to!
La graphic di Helm mi ricorda tanto l' iconografia di Odino 🩷
@nerdoftherings I'm surprised you didn't mention notice how similar she looks to Black Widow from her own movie
Oh yeah! I didn’t even make that connection, but you’re totally right!
Dominic is a man of many voices 😂
So much for the walls of helms deep have never been breached
Kenji Kamiyama is a great pick to direct this girlboss anime adaptation of a Tolkien story. However, I cannot ignore how its a film but the animation quality is just your typical big budget anime series level. Ive seen anime series trailers with better animation quality than this. I'm guessing its just gonna be on par with the animation studio's last anime series, Shenmue, in terms of animation polish.
Couldn't they use A.I. to smooth out the gap between frames? I don't think the clips in the trailer are all finished products.
Because Japan has voice acting down to godly levels, it adds so much more to the trailer and makes the movie seem straight out of Studio Ghibli.

How about Hèra flying on a Giant Eagle being similar to Nausicaä flying on Mehve?🤔
I think trying to mimic Miyazaki's success with strong female characters was always the way to go. Let's see if they can reach his level.🙏
Imagine getting Dom Monaghan to voice a character and not have it be Hans Jensen
Hera's outfit looks like anime Triss Merigold
❤Frieren > Galadriel
This is going to make watching Two Towers so much more mind blowing!
Also important question: SUB or DUB?
It's not a Japanese Anime. It's a US made (New Line Cinema/Warner Brothers Animation) animated film in the anime style.
@@jamescaldwell2357my question still stands
@@jamescaldwell2357 The studio behind it is Japanese.
@@jamescaldwell2357made in Japan by a Japanese studio so it is an anime.
Why choose if we can have both?
I always find it difficult to be immersed in an anime film when the VO is in English and not the native Japanese, so this trailer worked better for me, as weird as that is in the larger LOTR context where English is the more natural choice of language!
Dominic Monaghan is voicing wulf! Listen to it and you can hear it!
Wulf is voiced by Luke Pasqualino
I was actually joking about being a Japanese version if they released another
Definitly Great content incoming…
I can’t wait to watch this
Good times
Where can i watch thlis?
Nobody mentions that the white dress could mean that Hera escapes from her wedding?
Btw, I would prefer the Aragorn's travels show made an anime like this than real action.
where did they came up with the name Hera?
This doesn't look bad at all. It was really cool to see Saruman and I'm interested in who will be succeeding Sir Christopher Lee, both Japanese and English.
This seems unrelated but would be awesome to see Captain Rohan in multiversus since that WB studios. Would be a nice tie in for people and gamers. Like look a character from a lotr movie is in our game so play our game or watch the movie to see the character. Just a thought
"what does Mordor want with rings?....have you worn wigs?....Will you wear wigs?"
The Japanese trailer is so much better
does anyone know if they'll be showing jp version in the usa?
❤❤❤❤❤
The Japanese trailer is a lot better.
The audio seems really off in this video😅 is it just me?
The animation style in anime is not the best look for me, I believe it to be a cheap and easy way in and out without worrying a out challenges.
For a great lore such as Tolkien's a new and hand drawn animation style should have been created specific to the lore alone.
There will always be people saying it's "good". People say Vinland is good, it's crazy.
Go make yourself an animation studio and do it yourself
@@plasticbag5508 You're the type of person who does not like people to say what they think of a art work, like they need to be artists to know how to judge a artwork. So if u wanna say good things about it, and defend it, why don't u first do one too and show us you know what you talking about?

Love the map
Yea, the tight outfit she wears is a red flag, it's too eastern anime, not western tolkien. That's just not how a shield maiden would have dressed, the outfit belongs in a different anime like Captain Harlock where they are pirates in space ships, not on a European horse Lord's daughter. It's Tolkien, i cannot give an inch because we've seen them take miles.
Are you driving ?? 😂
I suspect based on these trailers they are probably going to clip Fréaláf out and have Hera do the stuff he does in the book. That makes alot of narrative sense given that if you are going to greatly expand Helm’s daughter into an actual character, Fréaláf becomes kind of redundant.
They’ve cast Fréaláf so that’s definitely not what’s happening
so...remove or change a character that Tolkien itself wrote and who became the next King to replace him with an OG character ? Sounds like modern Hollywood for me.
Meh, looks like a background movie while I sort magic cards. Hopefully it just comes to video quickly.
We need more the lord of the ring anime movie
I like anime, it’s a great art form and there’s exceptional material around, but I’m not thrilled about anime style LOTR stories. To me personally it just feels awkward. I don’t think I’ll become a fan. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt though..
When do we get an English version?
Yesterday's video is the English version
We already have one. It has different shots though.
