  • After a cold yet sunny day along the plains, our final day of chasing Big Boy 4014 and the Race Across The Southwest Tour comes to an end here in the mile high city of Denver, Colorado. We meet the train at the very end of the KP mainline where the Big Boy crosses paths with an Eastbound RTD Heavy Rail train that is bound for Denver International Airport. The train takes the KP Wye and swings Northbound onto rails it originally graced in normal revenue service nearly 70 years ago. After crossing York Street, the train takes the C&S/D&RGW connection over to North Yard. The excitement can be both heard on the radio and seen on the faces of the crew as they take the first articulated locomotive over to North Yard since 1956! The switches are lined up and the steam train shoves off the Moffat Sub mainline, and on to North Yard Pig Track #2 to stay the night. The very following day, the Steam Crew would brave blizzard-like conditions along the Greeley Subdivision to get home to Cheyenne, Wyoming. This completes Union Pacific's sesquicentennial celebrations and activities. The experiences captured over the year will definitely be felt amongst railfans and public alike, for many years to come. Thank you, Union Pacific. Here's to many more adventures along the high iron with BIG BOY #4014. And thank YOU for watching! Rate. Comment. Subscribe. ENJOY!!! I saw the 4014 Big Boy in Claremore Oklahoma coming up the Wagoner Subdivision from Van Buren Arkansas. He stopped on Florence Avenue [FRA Crossing Number 428370P] at M.P 609.430. He was a sight to behold.

I've got to believe the engineer and crew must feel very privileged to be doing what they're doing.

I'm just in the shot 3:20 thru 3:35 and remember well after to taking a few photos how the 4014 seemed to tower over me when I brought the camera down. Indeed I often visited the Forney Museum that holds the 4005 since being a kid and did so that day just afterwards for fun and if the 4014 could be heard not even 10 min walk from there..😀

Great job, Nick... been following most of it's SW tour since they left Cheyenne.... am sure Ed and the crew are more than ready by now, for some "home time". Any definite word yet on when (if so) they will get to work on the 3985?? Thank you again... your faithful hard work on bringing years of UP, C&T, D&S, etc, etc. footage is Greatly Appreciated. I've been been subscribed since around 2013. : )

They said a few months ago that 3985 will not be returning to steam.

@@Airshotmodder.... Thanks for your reply, "Frosty" - but Who, exactly... said That? I know for a fact that while they were producing new parts for the 4014's boiler, etc.... they also were machining new stay-bolts etc, for the 3985 as well because they both utilize the same components and were doing so in preparation for the rebuild of the 3985's boiler.

There was a newsletter sent out via email to every member of the official UP steam club regarding the retirement of 3985 from service. Sad news, but who knows what could happen in the future...

Trains Magazine April 2020 edition says that UP Big Boy 4014 is going to make a trip to the Pacific Northwest. I've heard specific talk that it's going to pass through St. Louis, Missouri, heading out to California over Donner Pass, and then north to the Pacific Northwest before returning home to Cheyenne. 4014's trip will likely be the only UP steam trip this year. UP 844 is down for it's FRA 1472 15 year boiler rebuild, and UP 3985 has been retired again.
