Is it a better job than widwifery by means of salary??

Nancy, I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but having a private practice has SO many expenses and liabilities, not to mention state taxes. The Most liberal states take up to 38% of your gross income!!! And that doesn't include your business license, unemployment and disability for each employee - you will need at least 1 to answer phones; greet patients/clients; send out new patient forms; fax your plans of care for physician signatures; cleaning up between patients; stocking supplies; PLUS BILLING.
As a private practice owner, I can tell you, your biller and book keeper will either make or break your business.
During CV, my staff preferred to get bonus pay from unemployment than to work. I had to wear all the hats and I wasn't going home before midnight.
The brick and mortar business overhead is shocking to someone without a business plan.
If you want to be an independent contractor and not have overhead, I highly advise all OTs to become certified specialists WITH experience in whatever you decide to promote because at the end if the day, you still represent Occupational therapy and we already struggle with losing referrals to PT and have low credibility because of AOTA failing to educate the health industry and not fighting the APTA for our scope of practice. So if you are giving your money to AOTA, PLEASE have them step up for us, we have been an official healthcare profession since 1917 and doctors STILL DON'T KNOW what we do or how to refer their patients to us.
Insurances are another stumbling block and getting credentials for in- or out-of network is like making a deal with the devil.
Anyway, I appreciate your enthusiasm for OT and I hope that more EXPERIENCED OTs WILL step out of the box and take our hard-earned clinical experience and expertise out to the community as entrepreneurs. New grads have GOT to learn their skills under the mentorship of experienced clinicians. That's why I only take level 2 students who sre transitioning from being OTAs to MOTs and OTDs at my clinic.
For entry-level grads, I highly recommend doing their clinical at the hardest places in their chosen field (like a national rehab center, burn and trauma rehab, etc).
As for your mentioning of hourly rates, that varies from state to state.
I hope that money is not the FIRST thing that motivates people who choose a career in healthcare, because these are vocational callings and can take a lot out of a person emotionally. For example, I was sure I wanted to be a pediatric OT, but through my preclinical assignments, I realized that my heart could not take it and I learned I was happiest working with another population with specific diagnoses.
I hope you'll receive this message in the spirit of respect for you and our profession.❤️

Entrepreneurship is always where the $$$ is. My sister has her own EI business. I feel that all these OT programs really need to push Entrepreneurship, grant you need experience. But OT opportunities n field would be so much better if most therapist would do their own thing.

Evaluations vary in complexity. My low level evaluations bill at $300, Moderate $400, High level complexity requires more medical history review more performance areas to assess, plan and treat $600. So when giving advice, you could research what the hospitals and clinics charge and NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF YOUR, SKILLS, TRAINING, LIABILITY. You also have business experiences and need to continue paying those bills and salaries, so you can’t expect to charge anywhere near the low wages that OTs earn as hourly or salaried employees. By the way, calculate the amount of time you spend researching, writing assessments, daily notes, appealing insurance denials, emails, contacting caregivers, teachers, and referring physicians.DON’T GIVE YOUR SKILLS AWAY ON INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK ETC FOR FREE. Establish your brand and take it seriously.

Yes….COTA’s can, I have worked for COTA that ran their own Business. I have known COTAs that make more money then some OTRs, I would of been a COTA if I knew this before becoming a OTR. Less responsibility and they make about $5.21-$7.21 less then OTRs depending on what state and setting they practice. Where I work COTAs do everything an OTR does except evaluations. Not sure what state you live in but do your research on how you can start your own business. COTA’s also can be a Director of rehabilitation or a Assistance Director of rehabilitation. I didn’t know that COTAs do just as much and sometimes more than OTRs. Most OTRs aren’t familiar with all the different things a COTA can do so don’t get discouraged.

Lol. I did that calculation nonsense when I was 25 ;). I think the max salary with benefits for an OT WITH benefits is about $120,1000 which stinks because you trade in your body for average pay (you'll see in time) Independent contracting is a shit deal. Add health insurance, time off, 401k, disability and life insurance, overtime... etc.. you man's less than a fool time job.
