Synth Stuff Ep. 43 - Yamaha DX100

  • When two DX7's love each other very much, they may decide to have the stork deliver a baby DX100. This was released a couple years after the DX7 as a budget model but quickly gained a sort of cult following, especially in the dance and Detroit house genres. If you thought the DX7's DAC was noisy, just listen to this. I actually like the fuzzy, gritty sound of the cheap converter and wish the Reface DX gave you the option to emulate this. These don't show up as often as they used to, but check it out if you want some gritty FM goodness in your studio. The DX27 is allegedly identical but in a larger package. Also, lots of video game music in this episode!

      Here's another good demo, even if there is a ton of delay/reverb to bring out the sound the producer wanted: ua-cam.com/video/EDrZfmZuebs/v-deo.html

    God I saw this in a shop window and I realised I should’ve looked into getting it 😂 it seems a cool little synth including key elements of its predecessor the Yamaha DX7, maybe even the Yamaha DX7 II. I do love the orchestra patch, since it’s such a great sound and reminds me of the SYN-ORCH patch on the DX7 used by Queen for ‘Who Wants To Live Forever’ for Highlander. That being a great film included with fantastic music!

    My first synth was a Yamaha dx. Have a eurorack a deepmind and several other analog synths. I love them but I find usually find it easier to get the tones I want with FM. Everyone else FM is hard to program. Not so much when you grew up playing with it.

    no alegedly about it!! dx27 is indeed the full size version, the internals are identical as are the functions and obviously for that reason far nicer to play but also obviously not as portable (weighs they same as dx7 as all metal chassis and key bed of the dx7 is used) the dx27 is really the one to buy as they are better built,nicer to play and usually can be found in better condition through the fact that they arn't as portable, plus the really important one is that they are usually cheaper which makes them a true under the radar bargain :)

      Running the LFO into the “modulator” operator output level works something like a filter sweep. A low modulator output level sounds like a low pass filter cutting out the harmonics - the fundamental tone of the carrier operator dominates - and a high modulator output level brings out more harmonics.

I record a lot of commercially licensed music and some music for retail sale at times. I play a lot of instruments and I do have a Yamaha Reface DX but it's not same as the DX100 (the algorithms look a bit different). A friend loaned me his DX100 in the late 90's to fiddle with. Messed around with it until I figured out how to program patches on it (a big adjustment when you're used to subtractive analogue synthesis!), then wrote a short article on it for an electronic music 'zine he was making at the time.
    If memory serves (it's been over 20 years!) this had 4 operators, whereas the DX7 had 6?

    • @isher9035
      @isher9035 4 роки тому +1

      Yes, it was a 4OP. If memory serves, the DX100 was very similar to the DX11/TX81Z. May be wrong about that. The big difference between different Yamaha FM synths, whether 4OP or 6OP is the output DAC. The DX7IIFD had a better output DAC than the original DX7, another example.

      My memory's a bit hazy, but didn't Yamaha at one point in the late 90's come out with an 8-operator synth that could make formants? I recall reading about something like that in Electronic Musician. Woulda been a real nightmare to program patches for I bet!
