I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw this about the DX 100. I bought one of these when I was 15 with help from my mother. I still have it, it looks great and works perfectly. A very paired down version of FM synthesis though.
Picking one up next week and cannot wait! 😁 Came on my radar for the iconic 'Lately Bass' house sound and other 80's basses but there are so many other awesome sounds in this thing! Did you tweak any of the patches yourself or are they all out of the box?
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. Not enough DX-100 content on UA-cam! Someone managed to get a Rhodes-like sound out of one on another video. Would be great to find out if others can too. 😊
Killer demos like this one are the type that I should not be watching. I’m enjoying the sound of the synthesizer very much, forgetting that it is an economical alternative to the DX7 and is not touch sensitive, noticing the strap pegs at both ends and wishing I could grab one to use as a keytar. It would be a give-and-take against the SH 101. Hehehehehehe!
I think it's just FM doing FM in that kind of crazy way that only FM can, but it's really hard to understand, let alone explain. One of the four operators probably has a strange ratio number so it creates harmonics in weird places that sound like distortion. Since each operator (which is kind of like an oscillator in a subtractive synth) has its own modulation envelope, you can make it sweep up or down at a different speed to the carrier(s). Some of the DX7 presets do it too. They sound amazing in demos, but are really hard to put into a song, because they make it sound out of key.
I've got a TX81z.... same thing in rack mount. - One of my old favs! (As in... don't sell this, it's worth many thousands of dollars if it works properly. :D )

@@NicolasMelis So that's just a pattern then... (?) (I meant the pattern/melody) I definitely played that. I know it well. -- ..Wait, NO... You're playing that!?
I bought this new in the mid-80s. Good value at the time, and when played by a full-size keyboard I could use velocity etc. The noisy bass sounds are as evident now as then, but who cares, really? My MODX, of course, has all the DX100 can do and vastly more for less money (DX100 in 1985: £349, equivalent to £970 in 2022; MODX6: £809 in 2022). That's the march of technology, and the capitalist exploitation of grossly underpaid Chinese workers.
@@NicolasMelis Not exactly, no. It has an FM-X engine which can read original 6-op FM patches after being converted using Yamaha's online processor. All of the DX100 goodness plus a gigantic amount more.

Have fun with it! I ve tweaked them a bit yes :)

Thank you 🙏 its a great little synth, dont know if it can compare to the sh101 though, maybe only for keytar playing 😁
DX100 has a Sample and Hold or random wave or lfo. That first patch sounds like it.

Do you need speakers for the DX100?
Yes

Oh thats great! I think also a plugin called dexed has the dx7 sounds
DX7 is different. This has only 4 ops but extra waveforms in the ops.
The noisy basslines are what people actually really really dig of this synth. You just can’t get that 12bit grittiness from modern FM synths
