  • These banks showcase the true capability of the DX7. No more spending hours going through banks to find the right sound. The DX7 is a truly remarkable synth which can rival modern VL synths. The realism of many of the sounds comes from the 6 operators of the DX7 responding differently to velocity levels, so the sound is dynamic as an acoustic instrument. The patches go far beyond the "canned" samples sound of the ROMplers of the period. more If these patches came out in the 80's they my have changed history.
    The sounds can be found at www.offthematr...
    The video effects were created with Pinnacle Studio 24

    This honestly shows how the DX7 was really never used to it's fullest potential, I really wish Yamaha would re-release the Yamaha DX7 and not as a reface, but as a MIDI 2.0 compliant DX7

At times i felt jealous of the Korg's realism but when I think of how I was able to program my own sounds and the amazing Electric Piano sound was brilliant on the V50. FINALLY someone who knows how to program the DX7 and maximize its capabilities. The factory patches are so underwhelming. Excellent. I have a SuperMAX+ modchip which adds even more functionality to my DX7, and it's a astounding. I can make convincing "analog" pads by stacking and detuning voices. It also can do delay by retriggering voices. Those are only some of the features it adds.

    As to the famous "FOUR DAYS" claim. I know one of the original programmers has claimed exactly that (I think in an interview in Keyboard Mag, and maybe somewhere else). I'm sure there was some high-profile phase of the project that was four days. But I suspect a huge amount of the work was done in earlier phases as well. This could include 1) using patches from previous generations of Yamaha FM instruments as starting points, 2) pre-developing patches either on such previous-gen hardware or more likely on test mules and pre-production synths, 3) the engineering team's "test crash dummy" patches that the hardware was literally designed around.

    • @anttihuovilainen1653
      @anttihuovilainen1653 Рік тому +2

      I recall an interview where they said the original GOAL was to make the patches in just 4 days, but they ended up spending some weeks in Japan to actually create all of them.

    • @lqr824
      @lqr824 Рік тому +2

      @@anttihuovilainen1653 Oh hey, I recognize your name! The Finnish synth software mafia! 😀 Anyway I was a synth fan in the latter 1980s and started studying Japanese so I could potentially join Korg Roland or Yamaha. I ended up working in Japan starting Jan 1992, but in a Unix computer company (Omron/Data General). My experience in tech business in Japan in 1991 might not reflect highly on Japan tech business in 1982/1983. That was a LOOONG decade of progress for Japan and technology. But, in my experience, there's no way a company like Yamaha would bet the company on a four day business trip. A synth is only as good as its presets. (At least the DX7 was, with its FM/PM synthesis.) The funny thing was that after a few years in Japan, I moved to Switzerland and learned good German as well as Japanese and made my own very powerful synth software. Then when Korg opened a development group in Berlin I applied but they didn't even care to respond personally. Oh well, I'm sure they found better people than someone who spoke German and Japanese and changed their entire life around trying to join a Japanese synth company. Oh well! What are you doing, are you in academia now or in industy?

    If I was a software developer for Yamaha, I’d allow users to record a sound, then perform an FFT analysis and set the FM engine accordingly. Ie. Replicate any other synth, not with samples, but the actual operators/envelopes etc. hard job, but that’s the beauty of computers! Instead they give us “smart morph” - urgh! Nice improvements! I’m an amateur FM sound designer myself.

    • @offthematrix5310
      @offthematrix5310  10 місяців тому +1

      I thought of the possibility of doing that but it would be extremely difficult to develop software that could accurately analyze a complex sound to reproduce in FM. It would likely need many more operators than the 6 of the DX7.

    • @serhiymarchenko8361
      @serhiymarchenko8361 8 місяців тому +1

      This task should be doable for a waveform snapshot (single cycle), but become very complicated if you want to recreate spectrum changes over time. Probably the idea would be to make a few of those snapshots (attack, decay, sustain etc.) and software could analyze and find possible matches between them to recreate timbral
      changes (operator EGs).
      For FS1R there is software that analyzes .wav file and generates FSEQ (formant sequence), but that is a bit different compared to multi-operator FM sound generation.

    A little taken aback by comparing the Rhodes with the famous DX7 electric piano, I love them both but for very different reasons (the DX7 one made me close my eyes).
    Great, great inspiring patches.
    Those slowly developing ones are impressive, they really convey emotion (props to the player too) and there's much in those icey/metal high areas to accentuate with equalized reverbs - or not.

  • @stephenc3060
    @stephenc3060 8 місяців тому +2

    Okay, I (pretty much always) have to go against the crowd on this one. I couldn't agree with more with the observations that these patches demonstrate next-level skill, artistry, and painstaking attention to detail -- that feels to me at least, IDK, underutilized maybe? I'm an old guitarist and FX/amp tech and I'll argue up and down that a well designed electric guitar rig is the most broadly expressive instrument ever. (Spend an afternoon listening to the Edge's right hand).
    Before the DX, a technician could program a sequencer, and train a roadie to replace them live. But here's a true performance instrument, one that needs a skilled musician to get the real-time nuance of a live performance with other musicians.
    I guess what I'm trying to say is that in the last 20 years, the keyboards have gone off the charts with realism. I've seen pianos with 12 samples per key that calculate the harmonics of other keys interacting. Unreal how real they sound. Sadly, the DX will never get close. Why try? The best pure musicians push their instrument to get it to do things no other instrument, or instrumentalist can. With rare exceptions (Tom Morello emulating DJ scratching), it's not by working to make it sound like something that already exists.
    Sorry. Again, you've really done something amazing and I'm not trying to dismiss your work. Just an old man shaking his fist at the clouds.

    • @offthematrix5310
      @offthematrix5310  8 місяців тому +2

      Very often I'm not happy with samples of instruments. Because often they sound thin and they don't respond in timbre to velocity and BC. So FM still has some advantages over sampling. I just made a video about layer FM with piano samples that explains more. Actually, I'm working on a sample library too.

  • @CaptJackAubreyOfTheRoyalNavy

    You kinda have a part of what was the poibilities in th 80's with FM in the Synclavier, problem was the computer's was not fast enough in the 80's to make real physical modelling. The other idea was to use several FM Synths, Have a computer analyze eg. a Piano sound and split the different part of the sounds into something the 6 operator FM generator can do and combine it into the TX816. That way the Synth itself didn't need a Super Computer to produce the sound on the fly. It was kinda the birth of one of the possible ways of doing Physical modelling

    • @EvilDragon666

      No, best DX7 emulation is Plogue's OPS7. Better than Dexed, (still has issues with envelopes and certain algorithms), better than Arturia's (takes too much CPU), better than HALion7 (which is close but not as close as OPS7, it's closer to the clean sound of FS1R without formant stuff than DX7, and yes that's with all three "emulation modes" tried out).

      @X22GJP Рік тому +2

      Same - nothing there leapt out and inspired me, but instead is just the sound of an era - much like the D50 you mention and things like the M1. You could say the same about the analogue sound as well - each has its place in history and each comes and goes. Right now, for me, the sweet spot is the Korg Minilogue XD with its 3rd digital oscillator. That thing can sound old and new, FM-like or analogue, quite incredible for its price.

      No these patches won't. But there's 4 operator versions of most of the patches at the site. Some of the patches actually sound better on the DX11. I made a view of the different FM synths with demos of the sounds.

    Hi, I just bought the set and like it very much; even if I only use ten of the patches it's less than a dollar a patch, so it's well worth it. One question, though, the oboe in this video doesn't appear to be included...?

      Isn’t the Volca FM more compatible to the DX7 than the Opsix?
      As for the Opsix.. the patches have to be DX7 version 1.
      I’m no expert but I think some DX7 compound waveforms can be substituted by using the waveforms in Opsix directly (saw, square) thus simplifying the Algorithms.
      (From the Opsix manual:
      Note that as the opsix and DX7 use different parameter configurations, the conversion will not be perfect, and some sounds might end up quite different from the way they sounded on the DX7.)

    • @tehedx
      @tehedx Рік тому +2

      The best thing to do is to use Dexed and see how they were built, then remake these on the Opsix. The parameters react much more intense on the Opsix. Operator volume has to be about the half, the feedback setting as well. It will still sound different, but with some tweaking here and there you can get pretty close. And if it's not close enough, just add some fx and unison sugar ;)

      I don’t think the OpSix is DX7 compatible.
      But yeah, Volca and Kronos/Nautilus can be. There is a “jumper” that Nautilus connects, that you have to clear, when you load a DX7 sysex patch, though. Their algorithm patch panel (screen / submenu) has a filter block which “shorts across” several operators unless you remove the little patch cord to it.

      @@offthematrix5310 Nice sounds, me likey! As to the "four days" story I wrote a longer comment on my view, from a decade of being an engineer in Japan and a decade of writing audio software. In short, 1) it is a well-known claim from an interview, but 2) I'd guess that quite a bit of work was done outside the "four day" window. I'm sure there was some stage of the project that was four days, and am not saying anyone's lying, but I'm guessing there was a LOT of prep done in earlier stages.

      No, not fully. The DX9 only has 4 operators, as well as other limitations. The DX7 has 6 operators (in the simplest term, think of each operator as a sound source. 6 layered together will sound fuller and almost certainly better than just 4 layered together).
