Google Pixel XL vs Nexus 6P: Does the Nexus hold its own?

    The Nexus 6P was the darling of Android fans in 2015. In 2016, the Pixel XL seeks to take its place - but at a much higher price. Does the 6P still have the value and feature set to give Google's brand-new phone a run for its money? Well, in short: yes.
    NOTE: At around 5:20, the video says the Pixel XL costs $780. That's incorrect - it's $770. Sorry about that!

    My Nexus 6P is almost a year old and it's still buttery smooth. I'm going to wait for the 2nd gen Pixel phones.

      Shellyman 1.0 Same I'm still in love with my 6P, I'll also wait on second generation plus I can't use a phone with a screen size smaller then 5.7 now so I hope the next generation pixel XL has a 5.7-5.9 version

      Shellyman 1.0 Completely agree. I'm keeping my Nexus 6P for another year and I'll see what the second gen Pixels have to offer. The current Pixel is a better phone in terms of specs, but it's not that much better that it justifies the price difference.

      For the price, I think it is overpriced. But thanks to the $325 promotion from T-Mobile, I bought a regular Pixel, which came out to be $375 after tax. I love it and have no regrets.

    • @peace4myheart
      @peace4myheart 7 років тому

      I have been a T-mobile customer for 6 years. I just thought why not make use of the promotion so the 2 years "contract" isn't a big deal to me. As for the first time pixel purchaser, isn't anyone buying one now a first time buyer bc it just came out. If I have a choice, then I would wait for the second iteration to come out as the problems with the first one will be resolved or better implemented. Never buy the first gen of anything if you can help it, that's my one rule. However, I have been using a cheap phone for 3 months due to unfortunate circumstances with my daily driver and it is so freaking slow that I want to smash it, so I thought I indulged myself a little. =P

      Cheetos Ortiz Is tmobile paying half monthly?

    • @peace4myheart
      @peace4myheart 7 років тому

      I wish. They spread it over 2 years, to encourage you to stick with them, like the old days with 2 years contract and a subsidized phone. This time, they give you $13.55 credit each month for 2 years toward your bill. If you leave them before the 2 years, you just don't get the rest of the money.

      Heck, even my Nexus 5 runs perfectly fine. The only reason to upgrade that I could see is no Android 7, which could be easily fixed with the help of XDA, and no fingerprint scanner which, let's be honest, isn't a really a dealbreaker.

    • @donperrignon
      @donperrignon 7 років тому +3

      Corrina Blake Yeah, in the morning, I'm shaving watching UA-cam. No headphones for obvious reasons. I have Bluetooth headphones for cooking and the gym. My wife and I use speaker phone for our family a lot together, comes in handy. We'll sit in the bed and watch UA-cam together, again useful. Conference call in the office with others, sound projects up. Having speakers facing the direction you look at the screen makes sense. I can't go back. Any other setup is just silly to me. Considering the last two Google phones had them makes this crazy to me (Nexus 6 user, wife had 6p)

      S7: Priced higher
      V20: Again pricing and performance both
      1+3: That is close to 6P, but 6P is ahead in Camera performance and software department.

    I have a 6P, an upgrade would have been a no brainer if the XL had just been $100 cheaper, and had dual front speakers. The XL is a premium device, and I wouldn't expect it to have budget pricing, but the 6P was also a premium device, yet much more reasonably priced.

    So many reviewers tend to ignore the fact that Google is putting a lot more emphasis on marketing the Pixel phones than before. That's why the price point is much higher. I'm really surprised so many people have looked over this. To me, the Pixel is missing 3 features that would make it a truly incredible phone. A better IP rating, forward facing speakers, and OIS.

    Ive had 3 Nexus 6P devices, the Pixel XL is a major upgrade to me. Not just because the camera is better in spades, but the performance. Yes the performance is a decent leap ahead. I notice this the most in photo editing, video editing and of course there is no comparison when using Daydream VR which I enjoy using several times a week. I'm taking all my vacations pics with the 360 VR camera app by Google, so cool and my friends love it because they feel like they are there on vacation with me. I really liked my Nexus 6P, but I love my Pixel XL. They got so much right with this device. I would not hesitate in getting one. Oh the price, well the price isn't a concern for me, I'm fortunate in that regard, however, the fact that Verizon has this for $10 a month, is price really that much of a concern. (I understand it would be if Verizon is not your thing, but still other carriers are beginning to offer great deals including TMobile).

    I agree with everything you said in this video and I would recommend keeping the 6P if you already have one. With that being said I have to point out that the Pixel introduces a level of fluidity software wise that I have never seen on any Nexus. It appears that Google finally prioritized having the hardware work in harmony with the software and that my friend is a beautiful thing. I do not have the Pixel by the way I just played with it at a store I own a OnePlus 3!

      Sure, it still works after dunking it in water, but if anything happens, then you are out of luck when it comes to warranty. I am still going to be careful with my phone, regardless if it is water resistant or not. Anyway, I heard the Pixel had some problem with the speaker after the water dunking test.

I am still using my old Nexus 6 as my daily driver and, understanding the differences, it is a great and snappy phone and running Android 7.0, I think I am going to wait for the second Pixel generation because of the lack of important things for me (where I live ratings from may to December, so...) and hoping a miracle, that the frontal stereo speakers and the 6" screen come back

    I've had my Nexus 6P for about 14 months and I am extremely happy with it. It's still as fast, responsive and smooth as the first time I used it, which is pretty much unheard of. Usually a phone's performance deteriorates as apps and other software are installed. I plan to keep my 6P for as long as I can and even if I need to replace it someday, I'll probably get another 6P. It's that good.

    I recently picked up a Nexus 6p 32GB for $300, and was very pleased with the results. I have not been on the bleeding edge as far as being the first on the block with just released devices. This comes from a previous job testing new phones and computers during development and prior to release. IMHO it is always better to wait for Version 2.0. The Pixel definitely got my attention, but I was put off by the price tag. I never paid more than $400 for a new unlocked phone and have had 3 versions of the Nexus phones and been fairly happy with all of them. I can easily live with the 6P for a year or two, excellent phone with great features. In 1 or 2 years time, the Pixel phones will be perfect I am sure, and I will be waiting to purchase one.

    What reviews rarely touch on is the weight of the phone, how that conveys a sense of quality, build and form factor to a device.
    My first smartphone, iPhone 3GS was almost perfect in its weight & size. it was not only comfortable but had enough weight that it felt solid and very high end. I would just throw it it my pocket, the complete opposite of akward.
    My next Phone, the BlackBerry Curve felt light and cheap. Plasticity.
    After that the Nexus 5 was a nice return to a proper size and weight ratio, but not until I got my current Nexus 6P have I felt like I got a great phone like the iPhone 3GS. The Nexus 6P is a little too big, but I'm not complaining because when gaming it feels like a tablet, and when talking on it it feels like a phone. It's struck a great balance.

    I have had a brand-new Google Pixel (Sailfish model, not Marlin, or XL) for three months now. I rooted it, unlocked the GSM, OEM, _and_ bootloader, and installed a beta build of Lineage OS 17 (based on Android 10), and TWRP installed. It is an absolute beast of a device, even in 2019, and I can't wait for the full official build of LOS17 to drop, as there are a couple bugs that need to be worked out before it can release officially. The Google camera app is still there, AI and all, though I _very_ rarely use it. I'm not photogenic in the least, and I'd rather not burn anyone's retinas with a perfectly-detailed picture of my face. Plus, my photography skills are nill, and I have no use for saving any picture files but my memes.

  • @DavidChooses

    As someone else mentioned below, the UNLIMITED cloud storage is another feature of the Pixel. That's a huge plus. It's not the same as what people can get already from google. This isn't unlimited with a little lower quality. Or video at 1080P. This is all you shoot with the Pixel at full resolution AND 4K video if you want. That's a huge plus. I can't imagine how much data that's going to take up with all the people who use start using. When people get unlimited of anything you always have people who go overboard and use way more than they would if they paid for certain amounts. But, it's a perk Google included.

    I like to think of some older nexus devices as being generic models of the corresponding manufacturers flagships.
    The Nexus One was basically the 2009 HTC Desire.
    The Galaxy Nexus was an early variant of the S3.
    The Nexus 4 was a round Optimus G
    Even the Huawei Nova closely resembles the Nexus 6p.
    Google have controversially taken design inspiration from the competition, which IMO is both a dick move and damn smart.
    I mean shit, I bought one.
    The Pixel also makes me appreciate how far smartphones have come, especially so when I look back at the last collaboration between HTC and Google on a mobile device (the Nexus One) that thing had a 480x800 3.7 inch screen, a 1ghz processor and 512MB RAM. Justified by what was then a reasonable price... £179

    Nexus 6P is definitely a better deal if you don't need that camera, or the assistant, for a fraction of the Pixel XL price you get a well rounder device that does his job still perfectly fine, on top of that you still have a whole year of updates, or more, more than enough time to see if the 2017 Pixel phones will be up to par with their price.

  • @ThatLaloBoy
    @ThatLaloBoy 7 років тому

    I've used both and there is no question that the Pixel's camera is miles ahead of it. Quick shutter speed, amazing HDR quality, great low light performance, and that creepily good video stabilization make this worth the premium. But the 6P is still good if budget is a main concern, though available financing makes the price easier to swallow.

    Pixel XL is a MORE than worthy upgrade!!! The masssive battery life (6p with nougat is down to about 1.5 hr SOT)....the amazing and fast camera, and the buttery smooth performance (6p is awesome....XL is WAY better). I upgraded from 6p to XL and it is more an worthy! I'm really fearing that these reviews are going to do to the Pixel phone what they did to the Pixel C. I got scared off of buying the Pixel C at release because of all the reviews saying its nice but not great. I finally decided to pull the trigger and see for myself and it turns out, its the best tablet on the market....hands down!!! The Pixel XL is as good as it gets people. Stop these reviewers that want phones to be fashion accessories from stopping your interest.
