First Drive in the ITB M30B35 E28 | The Best Sounding BMW I've ever Built?! Initial Impressions

- Today we take the Individual Throttle body M30B35 Swapped E28 on its first real drive!! It's finally completed so let's take it for a rip and see what this thing is all about! Spoiler alert, this might just be the best sounding, most insane car I've built to date!!! The noises are intoxicating and the fun factor when driving is insane! I'd say this car is much more fun with this B35 than it's stock M20b27. And at the end we also take this car head to head with my 3.5 L E12 and see how it compares! The results are surprising!!
This is probably one of the coolest things I’ve seen done to an e28
Dude thank you man!
People used to dog me for years about my E34 535i. The M30 is the goat, there's a reason BMW ran the engine and races them for about 30 years. Reliable, sound great with headers, similar to and S38, easy to work on and can handle boost well. Glad someone's giving it some props for a change.
My 535i is no where near stock however anyone who's ridden in my car was very impressed, before half the mods at that.
Yes dude! M30s are special engines. Durable and good for many things!
I mean, they're similar because m88/s38s are basically an m30 block with different heads. They also sound similar to an m30 having itbs, and it's a fantastic sound (though in my experience the s38 is quieter, I prefer the rowdier sound of the m88).
Definitely a fan of the 2 angles. NOW WE NEED MOAR. FENDER, ROOF, EXHAUST ALL OF THE ANGLESS
WOAH WOAH I FINALLY UPGRADED TO 2 cameras, give me some time to get to 6
Your forward facing in-car camera setup is awesome 👍👍👍
Thanks!!
Thank you so much for posting this up! I'm building a standalone ECU M30 E28, and promised myself I wouldn't do ITBs until it was actually on the road. Awesome car dude!
My pleasure dude! Smart idea on your part! All at once was pretty hectic!
You just inspired me to build a car like this in Europe. Thank you buddy
Happy to help!
Engine sounds glorious 🎶
that’s why he’s the goat
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Man seeing your vids just encourages me to finish my E24 restoration with the m90,, got alot of tips too. cheers from 🇰🇪
Happy to hear that!!
I knew it was going to sound awesome. Congratz Josh. Enjoy it for a while, I know I would.
Thanks dude! Im gonna try!!
Awesome! Im busy with the same m30b35 conversion on my 520i. got the motor and mounts from a pre-facelift 7 series e32 they drop right in, will be mated to an overdrive E34 M5 gearbox with a 3.91 diff. RESPECT...Big love from South Africa🤟
Awesome man! Sounds sweeet. Good luck!!
Hey dude you probably don’t even realise that you’re doing it but it would be a good idea to keep your hands on the steering wheel, super dangerous with oncoming traffic as well. We need you and the cars in one piece 🙃
I know, im really bad about this. Habit of talking with my hands:(
Yep just one of those things. Are we going to see any content on your E46s any time soon? Any plans for the convertible? Loving the content and build uniqueness nonetheless, keep it up dude 👊
Stoked for u man. Such a cool build
Thanks man!!
No soundtrack quite like it Josh! So cool, well done 🎉
Agreee! Thanks man!
I have an m90 waiting to be paired up with some itbs. Same with e34 harness.
Sounds like a BLAST
why doesn't everyone do stuff like this. Great looking build, not a huge amount of mods, tasteful, subtle and that sweet B35 M30 sounds like the best possible version of itself. Makes me want to sell my E12 528 josh this is leaps and bounds above that in terms of enjoyment. would it be feasible to convert the 2.8 carb then chuck in ITBs or not worth the trouble on the smaller engine?
Thanks man!! But I don’t think its too small an engine, it would definitely sound awesome and be fun, but wouldn’t be all that comparable to a big ole 3.5
Sounds nuts! Nice work man
Thanks man!!
Sounds legit yo. Nice job and nice find!
Thanks man!!!
God bless M30 content. So so so slept on. Hopefully one day you boost an e34 m30 😈
Boosted m30 content is in my future! Cant say that itll be in an e34 though;)
@@m3nameisjosh464 God bless you could put it in a Prius I’ll watch regardless
@@bobsagit10 🤣🤣🤣🙌🏼🙌🏼
I’ve been watching and paying close attention because along the way I’ve managed to gather up 1 M90 & 2 M30b35’s. Pretty much up until now I’ve been struggling with deciding which engine to swap into my 1990 E30 325i, but after watching your unscientific head to head, I think it would be fair to say that if all things were equal (ITB’s & Mega ECU on M90) the M90 would take the checkered flag. As to your side by side comparison the biggest distinguishing factor probably comes down to the gearing between the rear differentials (are they both open diffs or is one an LSD, etc.) You swapped out an M20b25 for that M30 so (like me) you had to sacrifice a little bit of handling because of the added up front weight. That car was never gonna be a canyon carver any way, but when it’s done you’ll still end up with an extremely fun, and comfortable cross country grocery getter LOL😊👍🏾 P.S. Just throwing it out there because I gotta ask. Is there any chance of you putting a video together to share your Megasquirt Tune? ✌🏾
I would have to agree with you, a healthier, ITB and standalone m90 would rip by this e28. The e12 also had another person and a box of coilovers in trunk. E12 is a 3.07 lsd, e28 is a 3.25 open, so really not that far off, but a 4speed to a 5 speed, so its a bit hard to compare gearing. As for tune, im not educated enough on megasquirt to really cover a tune, I borrowed a laptop, uploaded and returned the laptop so don’t even have it😭
@@m3nameisjosh464 Back in the day BMW and Alpina both did a lot of mixing and matching with Diff ratios and 4 & 5 speed transmissions. When Alpina put the M30b35 into the E30 they used a 3:07 LSD with the 262 close ratio Dog Leg 5 speed that had the 1:1 5th gear. The 4 speed gearbox is actually the weakest of the bunch, but still decent if it’s not abused, but mates pretty good with a 3:07 as well. The other 262 5 speed overdrive gearbox is better suited for the 3:25 differential. The Euro model E24 came in both of the above flavors up until 1985 (I think.) IMHO you may want to use either the BMW, or Alpina recipes for the best results.✌🏾
Agreed on the spice of diff.. 3.07 or 3.15 from an e34 530 models
@@weifeng5958 e22 will be getting a completely reworked drivetrain in the future. 4 speed is knocking on heavens door. Same with the engine. As for the e28, im happy with the g260 and 3.25
Sounds awesome man. I have a 528e manual but the numbers are similar to your previous auto trans. Looking to m30 swap just like you. Awesome job!
If you decide to tackle that you know where to find the full tutorial. ;)
love the handycam view
Glad you enjoyed it, will do it more often
this sounds incredible dude! I really want to add ITBs to my M30. Hopefully i can do it eventually.
Worth it!
@@m3nameisjosh464 when I’m ready, can I pick your brain? I’m going to start by gathering parts. I’d like to do I stay myself, but little intimidating tbh. Also need a good tuner here locally (Ontario).
@@rahulbhogal1336 sure thing! Jak tunes remotely so you can hit him up too
Wow this is an epic build
Thank you!
Nice work - whata beast!
Thanks man!
If you still have the auto gearing in the rear, you ain't felt nothin yet! 3.25 or 3.45's... will make it gooo! I think you have 2.78 or so...
Do you havea bad center support bearing or tranny mount?
Do a e34 540 brake upgrade! No joke... crazy stopping power for the money. Put a e32 7 series master cylinder on, it would help also... Sounds great! Put some filters on though, that dirt will eat your cylinders.
Its a 5 speed 3.25! And keen ears, I think the ujoints on DS are bad, csb and giubo are new:(
Phenomenal result, what diff ratio are you running, greetings from Greece.
3.25!
I've got an issue with my e36 1994 316i idle valve..is it possible to fabricate...parts not available
Thank you for the content, love all the work. Just wanted to ask why you kept the stock cam?
Thanks! I didn’t want to disassemble the head and go through the work to replace cam, then I needed to do that anyway because the head was so warped, and it got so expensive I didn’t want to pay the extra $600 for minimal power increase
Sounds unreal!!
Agreed
Hie how are you , can I have a link where I can buy this ITB Kit for my M30 Please,,,
You should race it against your m3 powered cars be good one to see
Good idea!! Ill have to do a head to head of a few cars!
@@m3nameisjosh464 ya be sick to she how it compares to them
I’ve loved following this series. I want to do the same to my M30B35 swapped E30 - I’d be really interested to know how much power you made/lost compared to a stock M30B35
Hopefully i can hit a dyno. I doubt it lost power
Rebuilt the head on my M20 last year in my e30 and now I’m still getting some sort of knock and found metal in my oil filter. Thinking Rod/main bearings? Don’t know what else it could be, the brand new 272 cam looks fine.
What are your thoughts, rebuild the entire m20 or swap in an m30b35. This is the engine I think I ideally want in the e30 minus the ITB.
@@KeatonDee if your seeing metal in oil filter and knocking thats definitely pointing towards a spun bearing. Id say m30 swap is easier than a rebuild!
@@m3nameisjosh464 Okay, thanks for the info. Sucks as I spent a lot of money doing the head just to toss it away a year later. I think an m30 would be a sweet upgrade though. Thanks.
@@KeatonDee that is unfortunate :(
@@m3nameisjosh464 After looking at it deeper yesterday it still just seems like valve train noise so I’m going to change the oil a second time after driving it for an hour and see if I notice anything in the oil again.
The Itb, do they make it for 533i e28 too? How much power did you gain?
B34 and b35. If b32 intake ports are same as b34 then they will work. Unsure of power, never dynod
@@m3nameisjosh464 Thanks bro. Well I got two e28's 533i's manual transmission, selling one because I need cash and wanna Start trading Again with UA-camr ""Trading Decoded"" So keeping the most original one, I got M54b30 engine, but the 1983 is 3.2cc all original, I wanna keep it as original as possible but at the same time take the power from 180hp to 230hp. That's the plan, Without changing the engine, without going Crazy
sounds gooooood just needs a rowdy cam
Too late for that😅
Hello josh i love your videos :D and i have a question :can i replace the m50 main bearings under the car or i need remove the engine from the car ?
Main bearings means crank comes out, so i would personally not even attempt this under a car, youll drop a crankshaft on yourself
DUDE! Let’s F’n Go!! 👏 💯 🎉
1- that mega tune, ITB sound is Le Sex!
2- 14,300
3- I thought at 2:14 you were gonna shout out Jesse Giovanni 😭
4- I gotta ask.. after driving and getting the results and goal you got.. aren’t you the least bit curious what bigger injections / that shrick cam would have done? 😳
None the less!.. this series and build slaps !!! 👏
I expect delivery before thanksgiving 🙏
Blessings and keep doing what you do!
Bro my bad😭😭😭 i totally forgot to mention your relentlessness😭🤣. But honestly Im pretty confident a schrick wouldn’t have gotten me much further than where Im at, maybe some more go go up top but i dont think enough to justify all the extra cost!
This makes me scream i wish i can do the same withe mine but the fuc.... laws in germany -_-
Thank you for this rare episode of oldshool BMW Tuning
Im sorry you’re not able to do this in Germany:(((
naja da würde sich schon was machen lassen in die richtung auch mit TÜV
What's your exhaust setup? And is this a binuaral audio setup? Sounds loud from the inside
Schmiedman headers. Ireland axleback, custom catless midpipes. Not sure what binaural audio means; i have a mic setup and the induction noise is just THAT loud inside the car
yeah. glorious.
When you say it would make a difference for old cars on stand alone do you mean m52 as well or older than that
No, m52 is obd 2 it is pretty refined and can be tuned stock computer.
Is that stock exhaust ? It sounds great
Schmiedman headers, Ireland engineer axleback, non catted custom midpipes
Would you ever m54b30 swap an e30?
I’ve already m50 swapped an e30, dont care much for m54s, id do s52 first
sick
🙌🏼
Very nice! Ахуительно!!!
if you dont mind me asking, what was your budget for this rebuild excluding the ITBs? I have a non running b34 that I am thinking about tearing down but I dont want to get in over my head financially. @m3nameisjosh464
Hard to say based on me doing literally everything. Id say if you already have engine and are just refreshing/rebuilding it with no other mods like exhaust etc, like 3-4k. This entire build cost me 13k
Minus the cost of the car, coilovers, wheels, etc
@@m3nameisjosh464 Wow thats more than I expected! I am planning on doing the most work I possibly can by myself, so this is very inforamtive.
As much as I love bmws dohc inline 6s, I can't deny that the sohc engines sound better. And with those itbs its even better. Amazing work 🔥🔥🔥
I agree. M5x are awesome but really just don’t sound as good as these single cam engines. Itbs made this thing sound like a beast
@@m3nameisjosh464 its so sick. Now I'm curious what more compression and rpm would sound like.🤔
@@shifty1927 would sound insane I bet
90% of that is the ITB's, the M5x engines sound amazing with ITB's too.
one day i dream of owning an m30 e34. one day
Never heard an ITB M30 in person, but I have heard an S38. Your car sounds basically indescernible from that.
I need more s38 experience to compare hahah, i mean it makes sense, they are close relatives
I love your videos bro, but you have GOT to keep your hands on the wheel!
I know I know😭
You know we love to see the stachecam shirt🤧
YESSSIR!
@@m3nameisjosh464 I swear I wear it just about every other day and whenever I gotta go to the dealership I either wear your roadtrip hoodie or his shirt🤣 gotta let them know🫡
Awesome video Josh! m30b35 is an amazing motor. Seems even better than the S54 m3 motor as you said! Is it stock 5 speed manual and LSD rear diff? what rear gear ration are you running? again, awesome stuff.
Thanks man!! Stock G260 5 speed and a 3.25 open diff!
@m3nameisjosh464 awesome. i show some other bmw m30 guys and told them 5.5 sec 0 to 60 and they like its faster than an m5!
@@yellowjoe.2000 no way really?!! Hahah. Id say make it 6.5 to add a human error buffer
18:38 - Bro you aren't falling asleep at the wheel are you? lol - I noticed how tired you look in the rearview mirror. I miss my e28. I had an 86 535i with the plastic body kit bumpers, sport seats & 2 tone Black and Tan interior like the M5 could have, and it looked soooo good. I sold it and I kick myself in the ass for doing it every day!
Hahaha man I work a lot lately with all these cars. I am TIRED😭😭
Your new coolant reservoir shows you are serious as people rarely swap it out. When are E9 videos coming?
A must for a tidy bay. E9 series is way delayed as Im fighting through multiple projects that need completion first
Miata guys use an electric vacuum pump to retain their power brakes with ITB’s. Easy mod
Interesting, mine isn’t that bad to where id feel the need to add that but still cool!
Nailed it on tuners! They are arrogant, rude and unresponsive
Dealt with a few haha
Rolling 0-60 hehe
I prefer E36’s but this is my favorite build so far of yours.
Thank you man!
I have itbs on my m30b28 powered e24
Nice!!!
so itbs over a turbo ? dont know what i want yet
I mean turbo is 2x the power. Itbs are basically just a novelty for noise
An m30 with 3.07 or 3.15 is where its at... Had it on Red 5.
It’s can run on original ecu ?
No , stock ecu would have no idea how to run this
15:30 If you did ITBs with with a 535i, it would have hydro boost. That would help the brake situation.
True that, and help my clearance issues
Cant wait to see you eventually get to the holy grail of old school BMWs, the E24 (imo)
Ive had 4. 2 project series on this channel!
Sweet musik, and you new mic Setup is perfect 👌 can really hear the 6 cylinder beautiful sound. all the way to Denmark✌️
Thank you my friend!
Sweet build!
Think i want this noise as a ringtone or my alarm clock 😍great video josh i love this thing
Hahah thank you man!!
Sounds amazing. Don't let this be the finale, want to see some cosmetic mods.
Were not done yet! Rear euro bumper and wheels still!
You running a 3.07 diff in that Bad Boy?
3.07 in the e12, this e28 is 3.25 i think
Amazing finished product. Totally worth the headache
Agreed!
@@m3nameisjosh464 I’m going to be doing a B35 swap into my E12 528i soon. Your videos will help. Thanks
