  • **Sorry for the poor audio at beginning - totally forgot to remove the gopro from the mount first**
    So I had a saying before I turned 35. "35s by 35."
Well... fast forward 14 months and the perfect storm occurred. In my last video we had a misadventure on a 1-1 trail where a downed tree yanked the valve stems out of a friends wheels (two to be exact).
Well... she's been wanting some 35s for a while, so we worked out a deal. And another friend recently went up to 37s on bead locks and it's one of those things you just instantly love and know you have to do.
so here I sit. "37s by 37" and I swore I'd never do it. 37s will be the final destination for this jeep though, as there is no feesable way to put this on anything larger without absolutely trashing the driveline, axles, etc. 37s is pushing it on a Dana 44, but none of us have "skinny pedal disorder."
Needless to say, I knew you can self mount bead locks. And you can self balance bead locks with internal balance media of your choosing.
This video is me mounting my 37 inch Cooper STT Pro tires on KMC Machete XD229 bead locks. I learned a lot in the process, and took my first tire from 2 hours to just under 40 minutes by the time I mounted the 5th/spare tire.
I did have to dismount the ring and pour in 2 more ounces of match grade bbs to balance these out, and also ironically playing with tire pressure the jeep absolutely loves 35 PSI with 12.5 ounces of balance media in them (but wouldn't balance at 25 PSI at all). I can run the entire speed range and make wide corners with no issue (the tires re-balance immediately).
Enjoy the video of self mounting 37s on bead locks! You really can do it! Be patient, make sure you center the ring correctly, and torque everything to spec!
I'll wheel these this summer and post a follow-up at some point.
Stay tuned. If you like what you see here, hit that subscribe button as I have a lot of weekend getaways planned this summer, and we're gonna try really hard to make the jeep trips more into a vlog style than dashcam style.

I found that 25 psi, was perfect. 37x12.50x15 Rockers, on 15x8 ( NOT headlocks ) with 8oz’s of airsoft bb’s , I’ve been running them for almost 7 years, @ 70 miles round trip daily, and wheeling them, at least two or three times a month, 04 Tj 4.0L sport, with 4:88’s, OX LOCKERS, Rubicon 44’s, with 33 spline Alloy axels. Love the videos.

When I installed mine I bought the gallon of tire lube at Advanced Auto Parts.
And I used it like it was free. The more the better. On the tire beads. On the wheel itself. I even put some on my junk just to be safe (not really). I also used some small pieces of 2x4 on the ground and laid the tire/wheel assembly on it. I found when hitting the bead on while on top of the bucket the bucket moves and dissipates the force of your dead blow. So having the tire on the ground lets all of the dead blows force go into the bead pushing it onto the lip of the beadlock. Then once the ring was on I tossed the assembly onto the bucket to let the bottom bead slip down into the rear bead of the wheel to make a seal so when it comes time to air up it pops that bead on easily. I also slapped some more lube on the rear part of the barrel just before airing up so that when pressure started to build the bead would slide over the bead easily.

I purchased a 2017 JKU Rubicon preowned. It already has a lift on it and running the Cooper 37's like yours on ATX bead lock wheels. I've never had bead lock wheels on a vehicle before (or owned a jeep for that matter). My question is driving them on the roads. I use the jeep to drive around town, as well as driving out of state on trips. Is this ok? Do the bead locks require any regular maintenance? Thanks for any help.

bead lock wheels on the highway is a sticky situation. there are DOT approved versions, but most are not. not because they were denied, rather they were not tested and approved. with the amount of look alike bead locks out there, most highway patrol don't know how to distinguish them while you are driving highway speeds, and it's a waste of time to pull over every vehicle with a lock ring to see if it's decorative or not. you will need to air down to 0 and check your ring bolt torque a few times a year, but i never saw mine back off at all.

It was so close to being perfect. Problem is the large volume of them can't pack tight enough. I switched to dynabead and they balance 99% of the time. 1% I have to hit a hard bump to force them to move and then they are good.

so i have a JLUR now that came dealer modified with 2 inch mopar lift and 35s, i did one of the tougher trails in northern colorado and hit the bottom just a couple times, mostly because i was pulling my offroad trailer up with me. ultimately two of the tires took more than 8 ounces to balance. so i'd have had to put in almost a pound of weight to get one corrected with beads. beadlocks are known to be difficult to balance.

Nice tires and rims. Love to know what gear ratio your running and how the tire size affected your power. Have a 93 YJ with 33 10.50 15. Had to regear it. I run 20 psi in the front and 25 in rear. Anymore, the front floats real bad and gives me a hard ride. Have a lunch box in the rear, that is why the higher pressure there. Tires are rated for over 12000 lbs at 50 psi. A little math gave me a safe lower end tire pressure of 14 to 17 psi with 2 people, dog and some basic tools. My Jeep tipped the scales at 4000 lbs with 2 people and a Bantam TC-3 trailer. So the Jeep and 2 people weighs in at about 3500 Lbs. I am sure yours is a little heavier.

    • @JustinKingOffroad
      @JustinKingOffroad  5 років тому

I did change to 4.88 because looking at rpm charts for this jeep that puts it back to stock at 70 mph (about 2,500 rpm). Granted there is extra weight, you can take off from a stoplight by just letting the clutch out. You feel it, but I can cruise 80 mph no problem. The stt pro are loud at that speed though.

I had to trim the bevel portion of my Patagonia MTs. They would not fit at all...I don't care how much lube was on it. Beat the hell out of it with a dead blow, used clamps the whole nine yards. The bead should be almost straight down in my opinion for lip of tire to drop around the beadlock rim. I too was iffy about trimming the rubber, but there was no other way.

check out "Hutchenson Rock Monsters" beadlock. 2 piece rim (plus an internal "wheel"), so you just put the rim thru 1 side and the other part of the rim thru the other side, (the internal wheel goes inside the tire, locks both edges/rims) bolt together and your done. That place and i think 1 other makes DOT compliant beadlocks. If it is good enough for 1st responders and military then I would say it is at least worth looking at?!
with that said, I think as long as you don't cause an accident, then no one cares about your beadlocks rims on the highway
