    For a no-oil nonstick alternative, take a yellow onion and slide it up an down on the hot grill. Diners use this method when cooking with stainless steel pans, same works for grills!

    Weber kettle grills are the premier charcoal grills but it's nice to see someone using a less expensive grill. A square little grill. It has less cooking area but heck, it gets the job done. I'd like to see someone grill on one of those silver ones. Don't recall the name, smokey joe?😸

    Actually, it's easier to have your charcoal already in the chimney when you start your fire. Also, do not put on the grill. Put it on the rack where you put the coals or put it on a concrete surface.

    I got a question, I had a oil rag that I used to wipe up used oil spills and check oil in the motor so I USED to lay it on top of the grill CLOSED but the vent may've been open when I layed ths oil rag on top of the grill so do you thi k that the grill will be toxified by the oil rag coming In contact with the vent therefore toxifying the future grilling food and if it is then how do inget rid of the oil that may be in the grill?

    • @StatUpBox
      @StatUpBox  9 років тому

      knightrider1545 what I would do is buy a grill degreaser ( which are specialized for grills,Do not use harsh chemicals or bleaching agents),also you can use soap and water to clean what you have to make sure is that you don't leave it wet, you have to completely dry it, so it wont create any rust and make sure you remove any soap with water. after that I would go ahead and do a test run , season the grill again with some oil when hot and use a single piece of meat to do a test. good luck

    What's the best and most safe way to start charcoal without a log like you had in the video?

    • @StatUpBox
      @StatUpBox  9 років тому +1

      +Larry Frazier if you don't have chimney starter and you are concerned that the ink from your local newspaper may contain petroleum based and not soy (vegetable extract ink), then the other option would be to use just regular paper towel with no print, not scented , if you want to go the extra mile there are green and organic alternatives to printing paper and paper towels. I would say cooking oil is still a lot safer than lighter fluid ( you can go with out using the oil, but don't be surprise if it becomes a mission) as a previous comment from
      MrCoffeekelly "two sheets of paper towels wadded up and dipped in vegetable oil works much better than newspapers to light the chimney" I would take that same base and place them in the middle of the grill, then place the charcoals on top of them then go ahead and light the paper towels up and with the grills lid control the air ventilation . That is how I use to do it before i had a chimney starter but for 10 dollars u can save your self a lot of future headaches , I learned the hard way. Good luck. If any one else want to comment and give advice is welcomed.

    Do you use briquettes or lumpwood charcoal? Which is better?

    • @StatUpBox
      @StatUpBox  8 років тому

      I personally like lumpwood charcoal, they last longer and i have even put them out with water , had them in a corner in my back yard, and re used them a week later and it rained two days as well that week, they turn on with out a glitch. But if you want the more charcoal taste I feel Briquettes give you more of that flavor, specially when doing chicken. lumpwood is sometimes cheaper than briquettes. So it depends on you, you want cheaper and re ussable lumpwood or more flavor briquettes. but Honestly what I do, I go to walmart buy the 5 dollar red bag of lumpwood and buy the 5 dollar black bag of briquettes, and use them as will. that would be a cheap way to try them out and not spent alot of money. and these are not small bags they are the big ones like 14 to 18 pounds. Lately I have been smoking meats so either of them will work well. I have also notice I get less flare ups with lumpwood (like burgers and stuff) good luck. Happy Grilling. At the end of the day these are all my opinions, I dont want the BBQ Masters of the inner webs to Roast me. LOL So I welcome all opinions. Hope others write theirs as well. :o)

    I am the world's expert on charcoal grilling. First lay a FLAT bed of briquettes (never make a pyramid). Second place a paper towel soaked in vegetable oil (never use fuel) on the whole top then light. Third put the seafood on the grill after the paper burns down, 5 minutes. Briquettes will burn slowly and will smoke the seafood or meat to perfection. Seafood will take 30 minutes and meat one hour.

    what if i dont have a charcol starter container is it fine if i just put some newspaper on the bottom where the charcol will be and light it up and place the charcol on top ever so slightly? (sorry I forgot to ask)
      How do you turn off the charcoal once you have finished cooking. Do you pour water or just let it burn out? Can it be reused, in case you pour water?

    • @StatUpBox
      @StatUpBox  6 років тому

      Let it burn out. Water can rust grill. What is good to do is clean grill meanwhile coals are hot grease is easier to remove. But if you have a place outside of the grill to dump coal .you can dump charcoal and wet with water,.

    when I grill chicken thighs etc, the fat hits the charcoals and they seem to go out ... Does this happen to you as well? You'd think if they are so hot, that wouldn't happen...Thanks for any advice

    • @StatUpBox
      @StatUpBox  6 років тому +1

      It's good to do 80/20 or the 60/40 method, charcoal on one side 60 or 80 percent and empty 20 or 40 percent maybe with a drip pan fatter meats,Because you can do a few minutes to get color on both sides on charcoal, then move to non charcoal side. Smaller grills with less charcoal the constant fat dripings can turn the small amount of charcoal off. Usually bigger grills have the options of changing distance from charcoal and it makes drippings fall in one or two charcoals instead of the whole thing. A pro tip trimming fat from chicken makes less drippings, if chicken is super cold or frozen may have excess water, is always good to dry meat as well. Trying a different charcoal brand won't hurt. Any more suggestions welcomed.

    how do you make a side to put your charcoal.

    • @StatUpBox
      @StatUpBox  8 років тому

      you need to get know your grill and how much charcoal it can handle I ussually go for 50% of its capacity for chicken and 3/4 of its capacity for any other meat or vegetable. once you have them on I move them with some metal tongs that I only use for charcoal or you can use any piece of stick. hope that answers your question.

    Please, pretty please, how far should the charcoal be from the grill??? I down sized the grill, only me 'n' my little old doggy. Turned the chimney upside down (there is no video or grill for a single person), so had to , put in charcoal (2 bricks with space between to set chimney on) put in paper, doused charcoal only with denatured alcohol, lit it up, got charcoal furry with ash, put on my filet (beef), about 1and1/2 to 2 inches above charcoal in hand held basket, as far down as I could. 45 min later still not cooked. Have switched charcoal and tried 3 different grills. No luck. What would you recommend? Had to nuke the meat, tough as leather. I live where you are not supposed to grill, I made a 6x10' patio with 12" pavers anyway, and wait till midnight. I'm over 65 yrs old, semi-disabled and with the few yrs I have left, I'd like to make something I like, on the rare occasion I have the money. Any help? :) (charcoal goes out) Chimney is same as yours. Tried to grill meat with a 1/16" of fat on one side only. Will check back to see if you have a suggestion, but doubt it since the comments are at least 1 yr ago. (as I mentioned, charcoal goes out, is the problem) Hope you can help and thank you for the video...

      @StatUpBox  7 років тому

      a good way to know how much charcoal you need is to actually count them, you can definitely start with 10 briquettes, and if you feel you need less or more you do that in 2 increments. with the chimney starter you dont need to add alcohol to the charcoal just by placing either leaves, twigs or paper under the chimney starter and lighting the paper on you should be good to go, specially if you are cooking a small amount they should turn on pretty quickly. what makes the cooking is not really the charcoal or the grill, but time. That is why i would recommend a thermometer, getting the meat to the right temperature is the goal, once you have color on both sides you want to place the meat on the non charcoal side until it gets to the correct temperature. then you want to let the meat rest for 5 to 15 minutes because not only will keep the meat's juices but also finish cooking, you can also wrap the meat in the resting process with aluminum paper to make sure the juices are not lost, and like that avoid the leather feel. remember that when the meat has alot of fat , flare ups are more common and can over char the meat, so the farther away from the charcoal is best when dealing with a real fatty meat, if you are unable to adjust the height, than flipping the meat in 1 minute increments and then placing on non charcoal side you should be good. I personally remove the fats from the meat, but that is a personal thing (to make healthier).

    why did you cook half the chicken over the charcoal and the other half not over it, which one cooks it better

    • @StatUpBox
      @StatUpBox  8 років тому +4

      +Samantha Sparks we start cooking it in the charcoal side and then finish cooking in the non charcoal side so it wont get burned , beacuse leaving the meat in the charcoal side for the entire process may burn the meat , and we also have the non charcoal side so when we have flare ups we can place the meat on that side to stop them.

    how many times can we use the charcoal

    • @StatUpBox
      @StatUpBox  6 років тому

      after is on, only one use, it can last depending on the charcoal up to 5-6 hours on , where you can cook many different things. but a whole bag can give you 3-4 times of cooking if not using a big grill.

    First tip, throw away that piece of junk grill and buy a weber! Second tip, set your chimney on a old grill grate up off concrete surface. Who wants newspaper ashes floating around in their grill??
    Also, a two sheets of paper towels wadded up and dipped in vegetable oil works much better than newspapers to light the chimney.

    • @StatUpBox
      @StatUpBox  9 років тому +2

      MrCoffeekelly thx for the tip. got this one as a gift, I have been thinking of upgrading to a webber , will try paper towels.

    • @MrCoffeekelly
      @MrCoffeekelly 9 років тому

      StatUpBox yeah the paper towels work so much better. Just take 2 sheets and twist them really tight together into a long strip and dip them in cooking oil. Then make it into a ring shape and set it under your chimney. It will burn good for 15 minutes with very little ash.
