I just spent an afternoon in hell changing my driver side low beam on my 2012 Outback. I'd rather replace the head gasket than mess with the headlights. I couldn't get the retainer clip back on, I think the fitting on the housing is broken. What a nightmare! Replacing the Fog lights wasn't half as bad.

Thanks for this. A tip, for first times especially: As you take the old bulb out practice the methods you'll be using to put in the new one. Unscrew and screw back the cover without taking it fully our. Unplug and plug in the power. Most important clip and unclip the harness repeatedly. Same with indexing the bulb. You'll be doing this blind with the new bulb and it helps to get a feel for it.

Was freaking out running around town trying to find a place I could do it the same day and I only would get that I’d need to take it in to a shop. Great video! I changed my headlight bulbs yesterday on my 2013 Outback. As you demonstrated, removing tires is not necessary. The driver side was more difficult and I found it helpful to remove the battery to gain better access through the engine compartment for some of the steps, but going through the wheel well was still necessary.

I'm still wearing the gloves and sitting on the ground as I type this. You're instructions are not only perfect in my amateur eyes, but gripping and humorous. Thanks! This very much helped me change my lightbulb. I did do a couple things through the hood with a flat-head screwdriver: I turned the cover and pried if off part way, and undid the metal clasp holding the bulb. But just using my hand through the wheel well wasn't too hard. Next time I'll buy the highest-price bulb they have at the auto-parts store, hoping it will last longer. The whole ordeal did make me more reluctant to purchase a Subaru again.

I did not remove the battery, though I'm not convinced the job would have been easier had I removed it. Replacing the low-beam bulbs on a 2014 Outback is like enduring the *Gom Jabbar* trial from the book/film Dune. After prying back the wheel well cover and stuffing one hand into the tiny compartment to remove the access cap from the rear of the light assembly, you've got no space to see what you're doing - it's all by touch and feel. The driver's side bulb is even more difficult to access.
I don't mean to discourage Subaru owners from performing the service themselves, but I found out why the dealership was charging John 400 bucks for the replacement... its a goddamn pain in the ass. I was cussing out Subaru engineers throughout the process.
A terrific video, it sure helped out a lot. If I were to rely exclusively on the Owner's Manual, I probably would have given up half way through the operation.
I am becoming less and less a fan of Subaru for reasons just like this. Now I gotta get up under it to repair a dislodged heat shield. I have to say that I miss my 2007 Toyota Rav4.

@@FixitBongbong I was a fan of the original movie - which I thought was well done given the immature special effect technology at the time. The director focused on artistic set/scene creation; hiring some fancy French clothing designer (JP Gaultier, I think) to outfit the wardrobe. I saw the latest film last night, and I've gotta say it's surpassed my expectations. Really well done. Big fan of Zendaya. I'd stuff my hand into any Subaru access compartment, or Gom Jabbar, to share a romantic encounter with her. Glad I could give you a laugh... you sure helped me out. Great video, thanks for the levity. After owning Hondas for many years, this Subaru is definitely not terribly user friendly. Just changed the spark plugs, too, but that's a whole other fiasco. I seated one headlight just a tiny smidge off and the focus was WAY off - definitely pay attention when he tells you to be careful about that. And I don't know about anyone else, but the clips were the WORST! Two of them shattered, they were very challenging removing and replacing. Thanks again for the video, it saved me probably $150 at the dealer!

Thanks for the video, this really helped. I've done this twice now. I found two additional things to help. 1) open up the hood of the car and have someone hold a flash light. There is room for them to slip their hand in behind the air filter, I passed the flash light to them up through the wheel well and pointed it for them. 2) park the car heading down a slight incline. this helps the bulb stay in place while your trying to get that clip on.

Thank you so much for this. Just completed changing the bulbs on ours from your video. My car has two slightly different headlight housings. The right side was a different cap than you have here. It was black with three lock keys. But the bulb's spring clip was the same. My left headlight had the same cap, but a different spring clip - it was two attachment points. A top and a bottom. Had to undo both. Top clip pushed in and down. Bottom clip pushed in and up to release.

Great video Bongbong, Thank you! Having done this a few times, Removing the front "bumper" (plastic cover) (20 pin fasteners) and the headlight assemblies (8 bolts or pins each) is quite easy, probably 20 minutes will open everything up for EASY Access. So if you're not as flexible/capable or just having trouble trying to reach from underneath, this will save you considerable frustration and in many cases time. Great video, just the same!!!

A $100 bucks at the dealership? Try $400!! For a 1 hour task. Thank you for posting this. I have a 2013 Outback and there were actually 5 plastic rivets that needed to be removed to pull back the wheel well liner. There was a 5th one facing down (like the 1st one you pointed out in the video) closer to the front of the bumper that I needed pull out. Also those darn plastic rivets get very stubborn after 10 years, so I pulled off the front tire (Driver side) and also pulled the battery. Made it way easier. I had jackstands to hold up the front end, so I didn't risk death by having the jack fail when I was pulling on the rivets. Removal of the battery helped to twist off that cover. I tried twisting the cover with just the one hand inside the wheel well, but couldn't get enough leverage to twist it. With my left hand from the battery side and my right hand in the wheel well, it was a very simple task. So, to save yourself a ton of frustration, if you are doing this on the driver's side, take off the tire and remove the battery. It is totally worth it IMHO. I would also just buy 5 of that plastic rivets and just replace them instead of reusing them. I don't know how expensive they are, but they can't be more than a 2 bucks each? Will find out when I go to the dealership tomorrow. If they are less than $2, gonna buy 10 of them, because I am going to do the other side, and that will save me 10-20 minutes knowing that I can just rip out the plastic rivets on the other side instead of being careful in the hopes of reusing them. Not worth the aggravation trying to salvage them if they are cheap. Thanks for a great video!

For myself, I prefer to take the extra 15 minutes or so of time and remove the entire bumper from my '11 Outback.....then remove the headlight housing itself. Requires no fussing around with getting your hand/bulbs squeezed into small little spaces, as once you remove the headlight housing, you can access everything with great ease! The first time that I did it this way, it did take me a bit of effort to get the bumper back on & get it lined up properly (before clipping the bumper fasteners back into place). However, after doing it a couple of times (as premature aging/burnout of headlight bulbs in the Subie Outback is one of the vehicle's few small flaws), the entire process goes relatively quickly/easily now.
[Replaced the halogen bulbs with LEDs on the last bulb replacement. I'm hopeful that they will last much longer than the halogens. Ended up having to disconnect the DRL module though, as the DRLs went into constant high-beam mode with the LEDs installed.]

    • @pez7031
      @pez7031 Рік тому +2

That's another option certainly and glad it worked out for you. Still, at the end of the day, Suburu must have purposely designed replacement bulb service to get the car back to the dealer for the dealership service dollars. That and the fact that the car goes through bulbs quickly (more so than any of the 3 cars I have that are driven more). I've lived with this for almost 12 years and the next car I buy, I'm seriously going to pay attention to how easy/how difficult it is to perform simple maintenance like this.

    • @Sonormuseum

Video helped me a ton, though I couldn't see what I was doing through my own hand.
Mine actually had a double pronged spring that held the bulb in, which you have to push in, pinch both prongs together, then pull the spring out to free the bulb.
But otherwise everything was exactly the same.
