the interesting thing is how you can watch these as an impartial 3rd party and immediately start digging into what the underlying issue is, but if you yourself are in the middle of a similar situation, you have to "See the dance" or separate yourself from it first, then start digging, and it's so much more difficult because our limbic system is so powerful.

Just from this short video, that didn't look like effective counseling. The therapist didn't show understanding for the womans concerns about inapropriate repsonsibility. If the therapist acknowledged that, the lady wouldnt have kept giving more examples. she just tries to stop her talking about it

She isn't trying to stop her, but I can see why you think this. She is trying to slow down the complaints so that the couple will identify the pattern or cycle of arguments. In Emotionally Focused Therapy, the idea at this stage of the therapy process is that couples start to view each other as the enemy because of all of these arguments they get into. However, the real enemy of the couple is the pattern. We cannot identify one person who started it or one person in the wrong because it has been going on for so long, even though this may be what the couple wants to identify on the surface level. The couple needs to unite against the pattern so they can resolve their issues. So, this is why the therapist is attempting to identify the pattern. (Note: I'm a student studying EFT, not yet a counselor.)
