John D. Rockefeller reached the wealth of kings without using a sword or ruling a nation. He was a private citizen who through his own conviction and ruthlessness created an empire we'll never see again. How did he build it?

Rockefeller's wealth makes Bill Gates's wealth look like the bank account of a women's studies major.

You win the Internet for this week.
Before the invasion of Iraq, the oil drilled there was used to fuel one of the largest militaries in the world. Which was controlled by a dictatorship and was, at multiple occations, used to invade other countries and conduct genocide. It is now drilled by private companies, compeeting in the free market, and the tax revenue is used to fund its democratically elected government.

Well played.

"Generally, the wealthiest people in history were conquerors and kings..."
Dude, J.D. Rockefeller WAS a conqueror.
Wait a minute....
Hold on...
A conqueror of other oil companies
Shifting capital assets to dominate the capital assets of others in order to gain real estate, then converting the dismantled power structure of the vanquished factions into pieces of ones own power structure. No it was EXACTLY THE SAME THING... Just by different means.
@Supadupa Swaggascoopa Given that the majority of territorial conquests were intrapolitical, such as tribes within the same nation or empire taking over smaller tribes, or Nobles taking down other nobles, usually with in the same kingdom... Given that corporate takeovers were indeed taking lands from communities on just as large as scale as most cases of kingdoms outright conquering other kingdoms. Given people's communities and livelihoods being upended definitely had a huge fucking impact on their identity, perhaps a much larger impact than keeping the same nationality but having a change of government did. Your appeal to the little guy on these grounds rings VERY FUCKING HOLLOW; especially, when you consider that corporations taking over lands got to perform MANY OF THE SAME ATROCITIES as occupying armies would only they could do it to "their own countrymen" and not be accused of war crimes and still often manage to work a few rapes into the process. "Oh no one's forcing you to sell. They're just discontinuing all local utilites and shuttering every local business that's necessary to actually sustain life in your area." Hey in the case of a foreign conquest, after they're raping and pillaging you at least got a shot rebuilding an reorganizing your community most of the time. In corporate takeover your whole fucking county can get spread to the 4 winds and the subsequent poverty and suicide rates make a good old fashoined sacking and enslaving look downright merciful by comparison. Don't fucking kid yourself. What companies do to communities on a semi-regular basis actually ticks overs half the boxes on the U.N. definition of things that are considered genocide. And if you honestly don't grasp that corporations are fundamentally reshaping nations and cultures, basically causing people to rewrite their identities on fundamental levels, then you *really don't understand a DAMNED THING about what's been going on right in plain fucking sight since the dawn of civilization.*
Nah! Just go ahead and stew in your moral superiority if you want.
I feel it is worth noting the companies that can say they were a part of Standard Oil at the time of breakup: Exxon-Mobil, Pennzoil, Chevron, Texaco, a very large portion of BP, Marathon Petroleum, and sections of Shell and Unilever. Yep, it was that damn big.

I hope you eventually also cover the breakup of AT&T, as the story of the Bell System is oddly similar, and in my opinion, just as interesting. Not just being the only other company breakup of the size and scope of Standard Oil, but also because of its technological innovations that people are still debating if they could've still occurred without Ma Bell.

Don't think Rockefeller minded, as it was said in the video, that made him even richer than before
Rockefeller: Hello, 88% of the market share?
Roosevelt: Monopoly machine broke.
Rockefeller: Understandable, I'll divide in 90 companies.
this system is also known as vertical integration where one company for example a car company controls all production, like making every part themselves, and reassembling every part themselves. it is the opposite of outsourcing where instead a car company owning part production and assembling, they would but the parts and assemble them, or make the parts and sell it to be assembled.
Rockefeller Foundation financed my college in its founding years, the50s.
I study inthe middle of friggin' nowhere in Brazil!
That means that Rockefeller left his foundation so rich that they even funded a school of medicine in a city that had
So basically he was a legitimate business man who became too rich for the public and government's liking so they decided to make the Sherman Anti-Trust fund Act to bring him down. It broke up his company into 90 smaller ones but that only served to make him more rich. *slow clap*
Everyone wins????
yeah, because we all now know. Investment marketing is the most efficient way to get rich. Why own one company, have all the stress of running it and potential fail. When you can own a fuck ton of stocks from many different companies, never have to worry to much since you can just sell the stock when needed?
Logan Boyette right 😏
Learn a bit about what makes monopolies a drain on our economy.
you just summed up the problem with capitalism... thanks.
one persone just doing what is smart... what hes supposed to do... basically collapsing the system to a point where the state has no other option but to break him down to ensure a democracy does not turn into an oligarchy.... btw. obviously that plan failed. otherwise you would not have to be a billionaire to run for president.
Mansa musa's wealth is heavily disputed, whilst some might cite him as the richest person to ever live, it is probable that his wealth is somewhat overestimated. Augustus's wealth comes mainly from the fact that he technically personally owned Egypt. but to cite Egypt's entire economy at the time as his personal wealth is not reasonable imho. Crassus I think has a better claim to being the richest Roman ever, a his wealth was owned by him directly. Also Jakob Fugger deserves a mention, as he may also have been richer then Rockefeller.
What about Pablo Escobar?
Pablo Escobar was only worth around $30,000,000,000 (USD)
only lol
Nico Bruin
Mansa Musa, not even close.
Mansa Musa was not heavily disputed. He had the most pure kind of money that couldn't me faked. He had gold which is the original currency and he had so much of it that he tanked the entire italian economy when he went their to spend it. he rode with hundreds of horses that carried his gold and a militia from various countries to protect him.

Getting people to lose their jobs and live in poverty while at the same time keeping them slightly comfortable with your "philanthropic" donations is kind of a monopoly on it's own.

My Great-Grandfather was raised by the Rockefellers. His father was a carriage driver for the Rockefellers, and lived on their land. (For better context, my Great-Grandfather was the youngest of three, and their mother had died of TB.)
One day they came home to find their house had burnt down. The two older boys were able to help their dad work and stay in whatever temporary housing they had, I'm not sure where.
But my Great-Grandfather was too young and had no where to go. So John D. Rockefeller's wife, Laura, took my Great-Grandfather in and cared for him. He was raised alongside John D. Rockefeller Jr for several years, apparently the two were like brothers. No one is exactly sure what happened afterwards, those details were lost to time.
My Grandma has told me this story many times, it's very cool to me. I'm surprised about the amount of history my mother's side of the family has in Ohio, we've been here since the early 1800's and haven't really left. Meanwhile my dad's side just kinda plopped here one day.

Actually from what i remember that 300 B number did not come from inflation adjustment but rather by calculating how much a person today would worth if that person has the same percentage of wealth as Johm D has compared by the US GDP at the time. If i’m not mistaken John D’s wealth was around 1.5 percent ish of the US GDP, which leads to this number. I read on forbes that inflation adjusted his wealth would be in 30-40 B range, definitely less than that 300 mark.

The Rockerfeller's are one of the most evil families ever to have exist.
This Family effectively enslaved YOU, ME and everyone on the planet to their family's "Banking system" . Instead of your Government i.e. the US government creating money and issuing it out to the people, a Private Bank was given the "sole right" to print the Country's money... these "Banks" issue a dollar to you or me and expect $1.10 back for every one dollar note that we use. This effectively keeps everyone enslaved to these people or "indebted" to them FOREVER!!
These banks such as the Federal Reserve Bank is run by the Rockerfeller's, the Rothschild's, the Morgan's and several others.

so..."this company has great prices and service, lets only use them". "oh no, now they are a 'monopoly', lets break up this company that's done so great we love buying from them" wait, what?
jerlstif "this company has become awful but we can't buy from anyone else. Oops!"
A monopoly no longer has competition and can raise their prices to crippling levels in it's industry. This is EXTREMELY detrimental to the general public especially in an industry involving oil. A resource that the modern world couldn't exist without.
I thought that J.P. Morgan had more money.
zh11147 I guess I thought that because Morgan literally bailed out the entire US.
Dakota M Maybe, but I definitely think that even though Morgan didn't have as much money as Rockefeller, Morgan had the potential to be richer than Rockefeller due to his ties to the banks. He was the "bankers banker" as to say. The US even needed Morgan's help which is crazy to think about. Morgan also headed a major trust filled with many other main economical figures aka his interlocking directories. He even became rich enough to buy Carnegie's steel business.
He was basically the Medici of the gilded age
ARULEVICH Morgan was the least wealthy of the robber barons. He was quite paradoxically, the most powerful though.
Time for some hot steamy plums of knowledge…
There Will Be Blood the film was actually based on Rockefeller, I think they since have tried to cover this up but it was the first thing mentioned when researching the film until recently.
"Let the good work go on. We must ever remember we are refining oil for the poor man and he must have it cheap and good." -John D Rockefeller
But still Carny>Rocky
4:24 these arrows are making my brain hurt
The funny thing is the Sherman Anti-trust act actually (for a while) gave more power to guys like Rockefeller. A trust is specifically a group that controls multiple "companies" to create non-competition. The problem is it wasn't so obvious what is and what isn't considered a trust since you can argue anything that isn't exactly 100% of the market isn't one. The great thing about Sherman is it didn't say this only applied for large corporations, so they went after other groups the were creating non-competition... like worker's unions. Since unions were pretty much non-competition organizations (at least in the corporation's eyes) they went after and, they being less experienced in legal matters like such, were easily beaten in court by Rockefeller.
What's the lisp about? You okay?
"It was just busyness"
That's a really weak cop out , as is "he was donating 6% of his income" , that was the era in the US when taxes were at their lowest , so it doesn't exactly makes him a generous person.
He was a capitalist like many others:
Built success thanks to a positive idea and then exploited all wealth and power coming he accumulated to accumulate more wealth and power.
You may say "but it's good for the economy". Is it? Monopolies and Oligopolies when run for profit are extremely toxic , there's a reason why laws were enacted against them and why once broken the collective value of the 90 resulting companies doubled.
Koroistro Yeah I was wondering why he kept trying to paint him as some kind of saint with those phrases. Basically saying ignore everything else because he donated.
Yo i just realized that knowledgehub has the most noticeable lisp i ever heard in my life
