Russ Kunkel (drums) and Leland Sklar (bass) - two-fifths of Quarto Valley Records (QVR) recording artist The Immediate Family - are the featured guests in this three-part video series on DrumChannel.com, hosted by Don Lombardi (CEO of DrumChannel.com and founder of Drum Workshop Inc.).
Lombardi states, “Join Russ Kunkel and Lee Sklar as they discuss their roles as the heartbeat of The Immediate Family band. The interview is a great lesson on feel, pocket, groove, musicality and their life experiences. It was an honor to host this interview with these two legends, and I know you will enjoy it as much as I do."
Episode summary:
Part 1:
An in-depth discussion on pocket, which also brings up a profound moment for Lee Sklar about body motion when playing. They discuss their experiences in the studio and on the road. Lee tells a story of when he was with Toto and how important it is for the bass player to be there on the downbeat of every song.
Part 2:
They discuss the importance of playing in a band and learning to write a chart. You will also hear from the legendary band members of The Immediate Family about what they look for in a drummer. They discuss the importance of playing "time" together, whether pushing or pulling back, and the importance of breathing. Also, how important it is for the bass and drummer to lock in together.
Part 3:
An interesting conversation about playing electric bass versus upright bass. Lee talks about a new book he has out that has been years in the making. A unique "fingering system" that is definitely not what you would expect. As we say on Drum Channel, we want you to learn and have fun.

Russ explains it perfectly!! When in Nashville recording a master demo we surprisingly found out for our percussionist we were getting the outstanding Craig Kramph..I was a bit nervous as the guitar player who has never played with that caliber of talent, but he said “just play and it will all come out at the end”..I’ll never forget it!!

Great interview Don! I really like what Russ brought up about space, I believe a direct result of true musical pocket. Not only drums, this applies to all musical instruments. This really can't be taught it has to develop over time. Hard to put a definition to this kind of performance on a musical instrument, it just happens in that moment. It is a beautiful creation!
@Sklar Yes I've also see you use your hand or your fingers when you're not even playing the bass! It happens for an exemple when you hear a nice rosy path (lick)

For decades these guys have definitely been part of the "scene". It's suprising that a guy like Russ Kunkle has made a nice living. With all do respect never got the appeal? His chops, feel and basic drumming ability lack versatility. Kind of a one trick pony. Not many colors in his crayon box. When I listen to some of the other kats: Porcaro, Vega, Gadd, etc...just seems like they bring so much more to the table. No hate, just my two cents.
His work on lyle Lovett’s “Bears” explains it: he plays to fit the song, bamboo splashes on the rim of the Tom with a great accent pattern. He never overplays, and the fills match the music. None of us know what he’s like in the studio…but all those top producers and engineers must be seeing something you don’t. And don’t underestimate the power of being “grateful”, as he emphasizes here.
Lots of drummers can play what he plays….but can they write it ? Do they cooperate in the studio with humility?
There’s LOTS more to being a great (and wanted) drummer than hitting the skins
