    So glad to see people of color interested in the Psych field! Was just reading an article about how we need more POC, men, and different sexual orientations since the field is so narrow currently.

      I looked into doing a psyd but decided against it because I LOVE research (like a weirdo). 😂 but it’s a great program for those who want to do more clinical work. The psyd program at NSU I heard is great! It honestly just depends. The PhD programs are SUPER competitive tho and chances of getting in are much slimmer. But I heard they a lot of them offer scholarships. I don’t know much about the psyd route because of my research interests.

      I’ve just gone through the process myself and accepted my offer to a clinical psychology PhD programme.
      The most important factor, in my opinion, is to have a general area of research in mind with some good research questions. From there, identify the researchers in the field working on your topic of choice. Read their work. Look at their universities.
      Start reaching out to these faculty members early on, prior to the start of the application cycle, and try to build a relationship with them. This is vital. No mentor/advisor, no offer, generally speaking.
      Meanwhile, I found it useful to get some ancillary experience in the same field. For example, if you have an interest in long term and severe mental illness, try and work as a BTech or Case Manager and deal with that population.
      Finally, if you get an interview, I found the unstructured time more important than the planned events, such as the interviews themselves. Interview Day gave me a chance to sit down with my potential mentor and speak at length. In an ideal world, your potential mentor will interview you.
      It is my honest opinion that a passion for the subject, combined with thoughtful immersion and decent domain knowledge, is a better asset for you than just interview prep, per se.
      Good luck!

      I am an undergraduate student from India myself and believe me, in the past 3 days I have easily typed around 100 mails and sent them to different US/UK/CANADIAN universities which have PhD/PsyD clinical psychology. Trust me, since I've a 3 year BA (Honours) degree, it's much much difficult for people like me because I've to ask if my DEGREE in itself (forget about the grades) is acceptable. I think your best bet is to just Google the best Universities and take a leap of faith. Close your eyes and just send them all emails to find the perfect one for you. Be ready to face a lot of rejection though. In the 100 emails I sent, I received positive replied only from 10. And that felt disheartening but then again, your chances might be much better because you've the 4 year undergraduate degree

      Taren, I think three of the most important factors include cost, reputation, and whether the school is APA accredited. The APA accreditation will ensure that you can compete for APA accredited internships, and will increase your marketability for jobs. The VA for example, will only accept psychologists from an APA school

    Hi I want to be a clinical psychologist but I don't know which I should go for PhD or a PsyD. I do know I want to be able to help people within counseling kind (sort of interacting with them) like a therapist so what kind of doctorate degree would you say that works best for?

    • @RenaesCorner
      @RenaesCorner  5 років тому +2

      Yes, so I would say it depends on your long term goals.
      Both the PhD and the PsyD programs have practice components where you interact with clients and provide therapy and interventions. Where the two programs differ on is how much practice experience you’ll get and how much research experience you’ll get as well.
      I would also look into counseling psychology PhD programs too. They allow you to interact with clients.

      Hi! Well first congrats on doing your Masters!! I guess for phd requirements you could look on the school's websites and find the clinical psychology application requirements. I would also advise contacting the program because there are little differences between each program. I can tell you that getting a PhD is hard, but i am also really enjoying my time in my program. I have a great cohort and an amazing advisor/mentor. I know sometimes it seems all rosy for programs, but the way to find out really about the program is by talking to graduate students in the specific program. I hope this helps!

      @@RenaesCorner Hello, thank you so much for the advice. It does really help. Yes I have been looking into the requirements, and it says a minimum of 70% in the last two year's of study (in my case that would be my Master's program scores), a good GRE score, Ielts score and a thesis (which I would be doing in this year as a part of my masters program). My question here is, what kind of thesis brings an interest to the PhD admissions/professors?
      I went through some universities as well. Some are APA accredited and some aren't. Those that are have clinical psychology in PhD. My question is is PhD from a non APA accredited university accepted if it's not in clinical? And what is it's a clinical PhD from a non APA accredited university?
      One more thing I noticed is in the clinical psychology PhD program, there are many subtopics. Like under an abc professor there's an xyz topic . But every topic is under clinical only. On what basis do students generally choose these topics? (I got a bit confused seeing so many topics and would like some suggestions as to how to choose from these topics and how much does that effect our job after PhD)
      What is the job scope after my PhD in case I take up clinical psychology in PhD?
      I would really appreciate if I could get honest answers for these. (Since I know no one in my family or distant people as a psychologist who are in USA or Canada.)
      (I know a few psychologists but they are all settled/educated in India.)

    • @RenaesCorner
      @RenaesCorner  3 роки тому +1

      Hi so I dont know all the answers to your questions to be honest. I am still just a student and everyone's experiences with clinical psychology are different.
      I think in terms of your thesis, you want to do something that is rigorous and research oriented. I do not know exactly what professors are looking for because I entered my phd with just a bachelors degree. Applying to a phd is different where, you are not applying to the program, rather to the professor. So I assume that your thesis or research interests would have to be similar to the professor’s interests/research. But again, I am not sure.
      I would only apply to a clinical psychology program if it is APA accredited. I have no idea what happens within non-APA accredited programs. The only way that you can become a LICENSED clinical psychologist, is to attend a APA accredited program.
      I am not sure what you mean about the topics could you clarify?
      I have no idea what the job prospects are as a clinical psychologist tbh. My decision to go into this field was focused on helping people - sorry. I dont know. I mean, it seems like psychologists are in demand. It just depends I guess.
      I know that it seems very blurry and ambiguous, however, that’s honestly how the field is. Like each of the steps, you only know what the next step is vaguely. Sorry that’s not more helpful.
      I also think you could talk to other professors and graduate students for these answers too. I mean, I am only one person and one experience - everyone’s experiences and opinions will be different to be honest.

      @crazyone2112 3 роки тому

      Hi, thanks a lot for being honest. I really do appreciate this. Thanks for clarifying some of my doubts because it does make sense.
      The topics I was talking about is, I noticed that genre is something like a particular disorder or just a particular therapy or a certain section of age group. Like the clinical trials are present but it seems we have to decide in which aspect we need to do. Coz according to ghat we choose under a professor that is working on any one of these topics. Even I'm not really sure about how this works. This is what google actually told about.

      Hi! I was also in that spot in high school. I just knew that I was going to be a lawyer, and then one day I took a psych class and everything shifted for me. I say all that to say, it's truly a personal choice and you have to do what feels right. For me, law felt like what I wanted, but psychology felt like everything that I was most passionate about. Also, remember that you can try out each of the studies and see what fits. Like take some political science/law classes and some psychology classes and see what fits for you. AND remember that there is a whole field that combines both law and psychology in forensics and there are psychologists who focus primarily on the law and how people interact with it.

      Hello! Yes you can. But you don’t need a doctorate to open your own clinic.

      @@RenaesCorner Really? I thought you need to have a doctorate because yiu need to become a doctor first in order to become a clinical psychologist.

      @RenaesCorner  4 роки тому +3

      To be a clinical psychologist, yes you need the doctorate. But if you just want to open your own clinic to do therapy, you can do that with a masters degree in mental health counseling or social work.

      I’m not sure about in other countries or in other degree programs. I know most US clinical psychology PhD programs having some funding available to students through teaching or research.

    • @sarkar_ma
      @sarkar_ma 5 років тому

      You get paid for anything that has to do with research. In India, if you qualify the NET Entrance exam then your chances of getting funded from the government increases. However, if you get good marks in that exam then you'll receive the title of Junior Research Fellow and will get additional grant. Yay for you!

    Can a person with a double major go into clinical psychology? I am already done with my psych major with a 3.9 and I am finishing my education major by student teaching for 2 semesters. I will graduate in 2 semesters. Can a person with an education major go into clinical psychology and become a child clinical psychologist?

    • @RenaesCorner
      @RenaesCorner  5 років тому +2

      Yes, I think that there are people who have degrees in different subjects and still go into clinical psychology programs. It just depends on the school and that you meet all their course requirements. You'll just have to do a good job in your personal statement about why you decided to do education and how it will translate into clinical psychology.

      Renae's Corner suggesting professional advice doesnt constitute trolling. If I was pursuing a career, why would I ask you the student, I would prefer solid answers and recommendations by professionals in field already. Im not saying this to criticize, I liked your video as a video, not a resource. Peace and Blessings

      Interesting. I’m glad you watched the video. And I’m sure that I am not the only resource people are utilizing when searching for answers about clinical psychology. However, I am a resource that people can use if they choose.
      I only asked if you were trolling because you made the same comment several times. Be blessed. 💕

    When your physical body is acting abnormal you would consult with your doctor. The same way when your automobile is acting up you would consult with a mechanic. Why do you do that? Because they have been educated and experienced to diagnostic your problems with your physical body and your automobile. We have been studying and practicing on human anatomy for hundreds of years because our body is tangible therefore, now we are able to recognize what is bothering our body parts then we came up with medicines. Regarding automobile we put those parts together therefore, we can easily diagnostic any problem in our car. Then we came up with "Psychologist" which it has to do with our "Soul", and our "Behavior" although no one has any knowledge about the creation of our innermost "Soul" and no one has seen it nor touched it because it is not tangible yet they want to find out our problems with our "Soul" just by reading some books which they are just conjectures of many people around the world through the years. And by just talking to you and forcing you to take a 6 hours test which it is based for only few people then they think they can diagnostic our problems! Are you kidding?
    Then they send you to some "Therapists" whom they have not seen you before and they have no knowledge about your personal "Soul". Each and every one of us come to this world with a unique "Soul" and body, which is different from one another. I am trying to say that if we feed our body with healthy foods and nutrition we can keep our body healthy but, there is no way what so ever that we can make our "Heart & Soul" to be happy. All because humans were created weak and we have no idea about the creation of our "Soul". Now let me ask you, are you sure that this "Therapist" is not suffering with his or her own problems in their privacy? Are they suffering from alcoholism? Are they going through divorces? Did they just involved in an accident? Did they just got fired from their job? Are they suffering from jealousy? How do you know what kind of environment they have been brought up? Did they have a healthy life before? And millions of what ifs . . As you notice you are trusting your innermost "Soul", the most precious privacy of your "Heart & Soul" with a person who is completely unknown to you. Yet, simply you allow these so called "Therapists" rape your heart and soul and give you their own opinions and judgments without being close friend of you. Do not let these made up business rape your heart and soul and take away your money. The only one who is aware of your innermost "Soul" is your Creator because He created your "Soul". Ask Him to help you and show you the correct way because He created your "Soul" and He is the only one who can make you happy. The reason that you think you have been helped is that 'you just let whatever it was bothering you come out of your mouth' because, this is the only way you get release from your problems. Pay attention please, you allowed what has been bothering you sort of "Constipate" in your "Heart & Soul" for some times therefore, every day passed by your innermost "Soul" has been suffering. Therefore, the best is be your own best friend and just write down what is bothering you or maybe record it and listen to it or just talk to your best friend about your problem. You can solve some of your problems for example If your children have problem at school and they are getting "C" and "Ds" at school just take them out because this forced education within the past 100 years or so make some of your children suffer and it is only going to damage them and lose their confidence amongst other students. Maybe the Almighty has a best plan for them in the near future. We are not created equal and each one of us came to this world with unique personality. All of those older scientists and musicians never did go to school and as you know the most successful people of our time were those school dropouts . Let the Almighty Creator control you and your children's "Heart & Soul" instead of following from your own baseless conjectures and egos and do not trust those so called psychologists either. Now we have the perfect scientifically proven scripture based on mathematics, the exact science with 1500 pages of pure mathematics to prove these facts.
