    When I took my first psychology course, my reaction was also 🤯! I loved watching this video and I can’t wait to follow you on your journey. You’re going to make a difference in people’s lives. I also appreciate you bringing up your diverse research experience. My first two years of undergrad I worked in a biology lab. Starting in the fall for my last year I will be working in a cognitive psychology lab, as I am planning to apply to experimental/cognitive graduate programs. I don’t see those two years as wasted as I discovered my passion for research through them. Thank you for sharing!! 📖

      Thank you so much for watching!! Yes! I love hearing about people’s pathways to their passion! We’re all like one decision away from a completely different life! I really loved all my research experiences! Thank you for sharing a part of your story as well 💕 you’re going to make a difference in the world too!

    I find your channel to be very fascinating and I love learning about your phd program. I'm also majoring in psychology but I have awhile until I reach graduate level but thank you for sharing everything with us 📚

    Hello! I'm starting my Master's in Clinical Mental Counseling and toyed with the idea of going for a Doctorate as well. I said if I did get a Doctorate, it would be the PsyD for the same reasons you mentioned. So it was interesting to see how one internship was able to broaden your interests and change your mind about getting a PhD. Thanks for sharing. 📕

      Thanks so much for your comment! And congrats on starting your masters!! I often think about how we are often one experience or decision away from a different life 😅

    What school do you attend? Also, how many years do you anticipate it taking you to graduate? Love your videos!

      I attend a program in STL, MO. I anticipate having to spend 3 more years here (for a total of 4 years at school), a year of pre-doctoral internship somewhere and possibly a year of post-doc somewhere as well. Thanks so much for watching 💕

    Thanks for posting this! I’ve been considering applying to clinical psych PhD programs, but was hesitant bc I’m super interested in how sociopolitical issues and social stratification impact individual mental health - and I thought that maybe I would have to be in *social* psychology programs to do research in those areas. From your video it sort of sounds like that’s not the case? Do you think someone with my research interests can pursue them within a clinical psych program? (I don’t want to pursue a social psychology program because I eventually want to provide therapy.)

    • @RenaesCorner
      @RenaesCorner  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your comment! I mean from my perspective I’m also interested in some of the sociopolitical issues - mainly racism and discrimination- impact mental health. The key is to find a mentor or professor doing that type of work or similar within a clinical psychology program. I will say there aren’t that many but you can find them! In psychology PhD programs you are really applying for the FIT between you and your advisor. So that means you have to have some similar research interests or commonalities in research. I mean from what you’re saying it might be the social is better fit due to wanting to do therapy eventually. Clinical psych is like you want to do therapy now, if that makes sense lol

    Fascinating topic. I have a question, it is just completely up to select a topic and work on it as a thesis, or it is based on the opinion of your adviser?

    • @RenaesCorner
      @RenaesCorner  3 роки тому +1

      I think this depends on your program. The reason I came to this program is because my advisor did/does discrimination work and I am interested in discrimination as well! She gives us alot of freedom to choose our topics for our thesis/dissertations. One of my lab mates researches colorism and another researches community violence.

    Thanks for your videos talking about your journey to a Phd! I just graduated from undergrad and am considering different degree options for Psychology and I had those same thoughts about research. I'm trying to figure out if I would like research and am looking for opportunities!
    What was the Stanford program you went to for the summer? Is it only for undergrads or for recent grads?

    • @RenaesCorner
      @RenaesCorner  4 роки тому

      The summer program I went to at Stanford was called Gateways to Math and Science Careers and I believe it was for undergrads only, however I don’t think it’s still going on! You can also look for post-bacc programs to look for research opportunities at the NIH or apa has a list of post-bacc programs.

    📚 📖 Memoirs of a Geisha changed my life! I read it just out of high school and ended up moving to Japan in my twenties. and again in my 30’s. (:
    Now I want to go back to school for clinical psychology or MFT. I really enjoyed your story about your path to realization. I am sure you will change so many kids’ lives!
    I really don’t know which area I would choose right now, but I suppose I’ll learn more as I study the different areas. I am leaning more towards Clinical Psychology at the moment because there’s so much you can do with that degree. As a psychologist I could still do counseling and private practice, so it seems like the best of both worlds.
    I’m terrible at math, so the statistics part of research concerns me. What has been your experience?

    • @RenaesCorner
      @RenaesCorner  4 роки тому

      I was torn between MFT and clinical psych too! It really just depends on what the end result is that you want to do. Like for me, the opportunity to do research was really important to me. But I think if I did not fall in love with research, I wouldve definitely gone a different route!
      Stats is something! I would say that it is a different type of math, honestly, to me it feels like fake math, BUT, there was a bit of a learning curve for me. I was able to use UA-cam and classmates as resources to help me with the stats. I think you can do it! I am not the best still at it, but I muddle through it!
