This was an unbelievably despicable and tragic situation.
The flight was overbooked and passengers were asked for volunteers to rebook for the next day. He was a surgeon who had surgery booked for the next morning so couldn't volunteer.
Because no one else volunteered, they arbitrarily chose him, despite knowing his situation. He was badly injured. Passengers were horrified and, yes, he did sue.
He should be awarded the equivalent of the price of the aircraft plus a lifetime free first-class pass on all United flights.

Imagine booking a hotel room. You're in the hotel room, on the bed, ready to sleep. Front desk calls and tells you you need to get out because they have corporate needing a room. Hotel tells you they'll provide you a room the next night instead. They call the cops to threaten to drag you out of the room you paid for, the one whose bed you've already settled on with your belongings already there. Then, the cops drag you out of your bed and throw you out of the room. DO YOU SEE HOW RIDICULOUS THAT SOUNDS? That's what's happening here!

Did you really expect a 60 something year old man to be super fit and have abs?
Pootislord Lawyers will come to him. This is a damn good case.
Admiral Akbar he was removed for violating federal law, he may win on an injuies case but not for being bumped from the flight, that's in the fine print.
So they offer $800 as compensation to 4 volunteers to leave, prolly half the air ticket price, to make room for 4 employees deadheading, when all paying passengers had already boarded, then when no one volunteers, they "re-accomodate" 4 people off the plane, 1 forcibly because he didn't want to go, and he got beated up. United CEO didn't apologise, pinning the blame on the brutalised passenger at first, then issuing an insincere apology when United shares dip by $150 million. Well, United is never going to be overbooked again
He didn't want to go because he was a doctor and needed to get to his patients.
true, but more importantly he was forced to make way for 4 United employees, and he had already boarded, not bumped at the ticket counter because the plane was already full. The low compensation doesn't even cover half the air ticket price, so United is entirely at fault.

The USA sold their best aircraft to those airlines and leaving all the shits behind for the American citizen.
you're right -try and find 787 service pressurized to 6000ft in the US It doesn't exsist. We're stuck with these crappy planes tha aret supposed to be pressurized to 8000ft but I took an altimeter on and it was 9400ft.. No wonder people die from flying. I'd suggest a Gulfstream 650 pressurized to 3000 ft -no flight sickness!!

They also overbook flights, just as all airlines do.
[Lar M] The point is the companies being it from the USA or whatever they don't care if you are from the USA, hell or heaven, they want who pays more for their aircraft. Not to talk about that even the company being from one country, it is financed by foreigners and receive investment from them. This is well observed in US companies that receive investment from all countries around the world. Why do you think they are rich?

How to ruin your company in 40 seconds.
yea 6 years later still going strong wah wah
I have a few questions here.
1. How is the 4 passengers randomly picked? 2 out of the 4 that was being booted was a young couple. Does that sound random?
2. Where is the code to the system for random picking?
3. Why couldn't the 4 workers of United go in the next flight out?
4. As any business owner/Doctor or someone with a job that is time/schedule sensitive, would you take a 800 dollar voucher and risk your job security/reputation? Keep in mind the next flight out is the next day in the afternoon. Meaning you can not fulfill your duties/errands for that day.
5.What if you can't take anymore time off for the rest of the year and your voucher expires? What if the voucher is non transferable?
6. Next flight out was the next day at 2pm, who will accommodate the overnight hotel stay/cab fair? Are you willing to spend the night on the floor at the airport?
7. Why didn't United pick the last 4 people that purchased there tickets instead of random selection? It's only fair for ticket holders that made ticket purchases months in advance.
8. If it is passengers are randomly picked, what about family members with kids? I've seen family members with kids have more priority because they do not want to be split apart, which means there is no random selection.
As a avid business traveler, these are the questions I ask myself. Everyone knows that airport/flight cancellation/delays are the worst and you have no control over that, but being forcefully kicked out with valid paper work after being seated is wrong period.
I think you are quite experience in the travel industry. You know these stuff really well.
They should have got everything settled before final check in.
1: They are picked randomly by a computer
3: idk, maybe they needed more personnel
4: You are right, but the idiot doesn't need to fight back and scream
6: They pay for basically everything
7: I agree
8: Im pretty sure they don't do family's with kids that can't be alone, for ex. under 18.
Frigman Gaming Frigman Gaming They didn't pay for everything. I have see a news that says the flight give passenger coupons instead of cash after all these. The coupon was 50 dollar each in total of 400 dollar and only valid for one year. That means if you want to use all of it you have to be on that flight eight times in a year . Who wants to be on that stupid plane for eight times after all this things happened.
yuan it's a voucher which is similar to credit. Most airlines has a non-transferable ticket policy which means the person that recieved the voucher is the only person that can use it. You can not change the name on the voucher or resell the credit to someone you know. So basically if you can not travel up to 800 worth of ticket/price in the next year, you lose all that credit. And most airlines will not accommodate hotels/cab fare for overnight unless you are a premium/business member. You are basically shit out of luck paying your own hotel overnight/cab fare.
Terrified, traumatized, but yet he remained non violent. Props to him and I hope he gets a massive payout.
He was never mistreated… he refused to get up and was clinging to the seat like a child and hurt himself. Then he went limp limbed, once again like a child, instead of getting up and walking he made employees drag him.
@@_________.Do you know the context or are you being willfully ignorant, like a child.
Time for Airlines to be held to account for violence on passengers. Not only this, but Daniel DAO , a physician who was assaulted, beaten up and hospitalized by Airline officials who tried to force him to give up his dest while he was traveling to perform surgery. Vote yes on mandatory prison time on Airlines executives who encourage passenger abuse
The passenger has every right to keep his seat. UA should overbook on its own risk. If they cannot get enough people to cancel or give up their seats, they have to do what ever it takes to get those seat while keeping everyone happy, BUT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMOVE ANYONE BY FORCE.
This barbarous action should not be tolerated in any civilized society.
The reason the airlines lobbied for the right to overbooking itself is because some passengers have last minute cancellations and the airlines would have to overbook to recover the lost fair.
That is false. The cancelled tickets are paid. Even if the passenger gets refund, it's from the premium for a refundable ticket.
When you book a flight, you agree to THEIR terms. That means you have to follow them buddy.
oziumzx said: Everyone who buys a ticket from United Airlines agrees to their "Contract of Carriage". That contract specifically states that a passenger may be "denied boarding involuntarily" if a flight is overbooked.
United Airline Contract of Carriage:
RULE 25 DENIED BOARDING COMPENSATION
Boarding Priorities - If a flight is Oversold, no one may be denied boarding against his/her will until UA or other carrier personnel first ask for volunteers who will give up their reservations willingly in exchange for compensation as determined by UA. If there are not enough volunteers, other Passengers may be denied boarding involuntarily in accordance with UA’s boarding priority.
"Denied boarding".
Very very very different from being DRAGGED OFF A PLANE *AFTER* BOARDING AND TAKING A SEAT.
Actually they do have the right, if they tell you to get off the flight then you get off the freaking flight, it's law. He was just being baby. what a Lucky guy! He can Sue the Airline and buy his own plane...
Not really, he was breaking FARs ( federal aviation regulations
@@matiassaldumbide5411 They offered half of the ticket price for people to get off
So if a customer either can’t or simply doesn’t want to give up their paid seat, it’s perfectly ok to violently remove them? Even though the airline caused the problem by overbooking the flight? What other business gets to behave like this? “Sorry, we sold too many gallons of milk today, either give us back the one you already paid for, or we’ll send someone to beat you and then you’ll be arrested.”
How come people are more angry with the airline than the officer who actually assaulted him?
The overbooking point is a red herring here, and is a clever distraction by United which most media outlets seem to be falling for.
He wasn't denied boarding due to too many paying passengers turning up, he was already on the plane in his seat, as were all the passengers on that flight.
United failed to adequately plan their staff transport in time and shortly before departure decided to fly additional staff as they were needed in another location.
That's United's problem, but they chose to use the overbooking clause in their ticketing contract to make it their customers' problem.
It's clearly their prerogative if they choose to forcibly remove a passenger, and clearly their CEO feels quite comfortable about that. At least now everyone knows that's the type of company culture that exists there and can make future purchasing decisions with that in mind.
That was unbelievable. To take a seated passenger off because they had preference for another customer. To facilitate looking after their favoured customer the airline had police violently evict and assault a fully paid and seated passenger.
Russian military couldn’t have done a more vicious job than American cops and the corporation airline they work for.

People, before you think that the person should have gotten off in the first place, please know the full story. The man who got hurt was a doctor who had patients to see the next day, and they chose him randomly out of all the people on the plane. United didn't even apologize for hurting him, and only for overbooking. That's not ok!!! They should have offered more money for peoplet to volunteer to get off the plane instead. If they offered enough, SOMEONE would have said yes, but they didnt. United stuffed 4 extra people on the plane themselves, they should have been more responsible.
