    most of this type of oil leaks on these engines are related to a clogged or not optimal working crankcase ventilation, make sure to check this first (clean or even better replace hoses and y-piece) before replacing the camshaft and tensioner seals.

    I had the 2001 Passat 1.8 Turbo and it had no oil leaks except everytime it came out of the VW Dealer after an oil change I could smell oil burning so I did my own investigation and it turned out to be a careless mechanic way to take the oil filter off, drain the oil and replace the filter, while he did that he would let oil splash over the entire area so oil would get trapped in places where later while stopping at a light oil would drip over the hot pipe, more care took care of it!

    Will the car leak about a quart of oil from the driver side if it just sits for a couple months if it is the cam shaft tensioner gasket? Oil drips down over the filter and oil pan just as you described. Thank you!

      You have to check the crankcase ventilation system. There is a PCV valve at the rear of the engine that gets full of oil and fails quickly. Same goes for all the hoses that go from the left and right engine bank to the valve. You have to replace them pretty often. I got valve cover gaskets replaced every 6 months, because they would fail, but ultimately replacing the PCV system fixed the excessive crankcase pressure that would blow the gaskets.

    i have a 2010 VW jetta 2.5 i seem to have a oil leak coming from above the oil filter housing any ideas of where the oil is coming from

    • @blauparts
      @blauparts  8 років тому

      Hello David,
      It's hard to determine an oil leak without personally seeing the car. To find an oil leak it is best to trace the leak back to the highest point of the engine. An oil leak coming from above the oil filter housing could be several seals or gaskets behind the oil filter housing. Also the oil filter housings are made of plastic so this could have a mild crack. I hope this helps with diagnosing your VW Jetta 2.5L oil leak. If you have any other questions feel free to visit our 'VW Repair & Maintenance Information' section of our website: www.blauparts.com/vw/vw_how_to/vw_how_to_repair_replace_tips.shtml

    • @blauparts
      @blauparts  9 років тому

      Hey +ElTchibo1,
      The cause for burning oil blue smoke is typically always related to the piston rings and can also be associated with the valve stem seals. This video is only associated with common oil leaks and oil smells related to oil dripping onto the exhaust manifold. We hope this helps in diagnosing your problem!

    • @ElTchibo1

    Need help. After daughter drove 2004 2.8L Passat to work, we noticed puddle of coolant on driveway. She put 50 mi on car during day with multiple ins and outs. No temperature lights or issues while driving. Took it to gen'l mechanic who found pinholes in coolant pipes under intake manifold & replaced with OEM pipes, o-rings, etc. No heat when we picked it up after repair. Took it to VW specialist, he tried bleeding, etc. Still no heat, and no coolant getting to heater core except for a trickle at 3000 rpm while car sitting stationary, then only some luke warm heat. Our first thought is that the water pump went out, but the VW guy put a new one in (with metal impeller) with the timing belt 35,000 mi. ago (133K on car), and it seems like too much of a coincidence, unless something happened as she drove it that day that damaged it or plugged something. Second thought is that gen'l mechanic mis-routed pipes, etc., but not sure that's possible, and he says he was very careful to put it all back correctly. Third thought is gen'l mechanic did something to plug it up somewhere. The temp. gauge stays at 190. We're torn as to what to look at first, All are expensive. It's 7 below this morning. Thoughts?

      I am sure you have figured it out by now, but I thought I would comment for others with the this same issue.
      The first thing to note is that on many cars in that year range, I had a 2002 A6 3.0, they need to have the heater core flushed. The quick way is to get some clear plastic tubing from your hardware store, attach about 4 feet on each connection (ni pp le ) then put a garden hose up to one end and have put some water through it. Do reverse direction first. You do not want to much pressure, just enough to get some sediment out. Then you can add some CLR and let it sit for an hour, then flush again.
      As for bleeding the system on the top heater core hose there should be a hole in the hose marked by white lines. When vehicle is COOL, do not do this when hot. Slide hose partially off so the hole is just off the connector (heater core n ipp le ), then start vehicle, keep coolant reservoir cap on. Let run, monitor top hose, when you feel top hose is warm, have assistant slowly raise RPM, when you see coolant spurt out of the bleed hole you can lower rpmp and turn off vehicle. Now the air should be out of the heater core. Let vehicle cool for few minutes then slide hose back into place.

    Well this looks like the belly of my 2006 A6 3.2. The thing is my timing chain,tensioner and gaskets are on the backside of my engine. All my oil is coming down the front of the engine. Everything from alternator, ac compressor, and all related front hoses are soaked. The belly pan is wet and puddles to. What would leak on the front side? Valve cover gaskets were done by Audi dealer in 14. Thx joe

    Just spent $500 to fix a minor leak on a 2001 A6. The smell was suffocating me at stoplights. He replaced the valve covers and it just made it worse. My driveway is a giant puddle of oil now. Never getting an Audi/VW again, that's for sure.

      I agree, bought an A6. Terrible compared to my 2001 Subaru which had 350,000km and no oil smell, drips, rotted exhaust, loud lifters, screaming dash and failing leds. Won't buy an Audi again for salty Canada. Close tolerance cars get out of spec and take the rest of the system down. Oh well.

      @@Naughty_Squad No one said that, but with Audi it has been a common problem for a long time and that is just not the case with many other brands. They also are not well treated when it comes to rust, so they rust within a few years as well if you live in a cold climate where salt is used on roads.

    I don't really get this video. It took him 7 minutes to tell us if you have oil under the car in the front dirvers and back passenger, then you have a leaky cam chain tensioner. How about taking off the engine cover and showing us where exactly the CCT is located? Or possibbly how much someone can expect to pay to get the CCT gaskets replaced? There are several points of failure for an oil leak on these cars, I did not see any evidence that the CCT gaskets were the cause.

      thanks for your help, my car had plenty of power no lights where coming on beside the check engine light and i took it to a shop they said i had bad turbos $6000 to fix, i went and got the car back and now it has no power and abs and eps light is on. any idea of what they might have done to my car?

    • @blauparts
      @blauparts  9 років тому

      Hey +nathan harrison,
      The ABS and EPS lights are not associated to your loss of power and could just be a coincidence. The loss of power could be associated with bad turbos. The 2.7T engines are known for having turbo issues which can be very costly to replace. In most cases the engine will have to be removed to access the turbos which accounts for the cost. We experienced a similar problem with our Allroad when the turbos went bad. Upon driving the car on a random day it lost all power while giving no warning signs. With a situation like this a second opinion and quote are always good. We hope this helps!

    Nice video.....can I ask a question?
    The question is my Audi currently has oil in the coolant system and the mechanic I have repair my car said its not the oil cooler, turbo, oil cooler flange and something else but I forget......he thinks it's the head gasket, but the oil is fine zero color ,the oil cap is clean and the engine runs fine never getting hot.

    • @blauparts
      @blauparts  8 років тому +2

      Hello shaggybuddzz,
      I would suspect your mechanic is on the right track. In most cases if your engine is getting oil in the coolant it is related to the head gaskets being blown. As you said "the oil is fine zero color, the oil cap is clean and the engine runs fine never getting hot." This may just be a mild head gasket leak that likely only pushes into the coolant system in various tougher driving conditions. We hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

    I have a 2001 B5 2.8, have had valve cover gaskets and some cam seal gaskets replaced. Still occasionally smell oil on exhaust, and there is a small amount of oil coming from other seals and gaskets. Car has 140k. Work done 600 miles ago, oil level still almost full on dipstick. In general, how fast do these leaks progress? Changing every single seal and gasket is not practical. Do I just check the oil and top off when necessary, or are there certain leaks to be very careful of? PCV system does not seem to be blocked. I know it's hard to say without seeing a specific car, but how does one live with these issues......? Basic history- previous owner did timing belt at 100k, I had cam timing chain tensioners done at 138k. Using Total 5w-40 now.

    • @blauparts
      @blauparts  8 років тому

      Hello JGG11,
      In most cases there is an underlying issue with with the engine if you are continuing to get oil leaks after the valve cover gaskets, cam seals, cam plugs, and cam chain tensioner gasket replacement. Several techniques are recommended for a successful installation of these seals. Improper preparation of the sealing areas, improper seal and gasket installation, and the PCV valve problems could be causing unnecessary crankcase pressures. For more information on diagnosing these oil leaks visit these links at our website.

      Thanks for the links, and yes, I question how careful they were with prepping seals and gaskets. The car hit 135k and everything wore out at the same time, when I first got the car. The cam chain tensioners were quite the problem, cold start-up racket, then no power at low speeds, rough idle, etc.

      Hello Daniel,
      The leaking from the valve covers is likely the valve cover gaskets and cam chain tensioner gaskets.
      The white smoke from the exhaust could be coolant entering on one or more of your 6 cylinders due to a blown head gasket. For more info be sure to visit the 'Repair & Maintenance Information' section of our website here: www.blauparts.com/audi/audi_oil_leaks/audi_a6_oil_leaks.shtml
