English comic, ( his name rhymes with sorry) who manages a brilliant American accent. He was a member of the famous footlights drama club at Cambridge university together with Emma Thompson and Steven Fry , whom you may have heard of?! He partnered Steven Fry in the eighties, and their comedy was intelligent and very funny, ( UA-cam ‘A little bit of Fry and Laurie). He’s a very accomplished musician, has made several albums and he loves his Jazz! All round good egg and fast becoming a national treasure. This is a great example of his work.

In the 1980's Hugh Laurie did some British comedy. My favorite was the Black Adder series he did with Rowan Atkinson (aka Mr. Bean). They are worth looking up to watch. Very funny!

Janel Lynn That's me too. Hugh Laurie monster. It piggybacked from my love of Doctor Who, Mr. Bean, Monty Python, Keeping Up Appearances etc. British music, literature, and arts are a passion for mine from this side of the Atlantic. It has always been cool to discover great bands and shows not seen or heard in the US.

I love Hugh as an actor, always thought he was great at portraying different roles he's played. I remember him playing in stuart little too, and i didn't think he like, actually played either. First time I heard him was a song called Unchain My Heart, where he performed it in a legendary studio. Dear lord he was amazing!

This is a great song and a fantastic arrangement. I first heard this son un high school back in the late seventies. One of the items in my bucket list was to play on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. When I got out of the navy in '88 I went to New Orleans and sang this while playing an acoustic guitar right under the Bourbon Street sign. I also accompanied a solo trumpet player at the water front along the Mississippi river. I even got a little bit of video from that. Such great memories.

Hugh Laurie is such an accomplished pianist as well as a singer. That was so cool, this is going on my playlist in smooth, cool listening. Saw you really getting into it Ty. For some reason I thought of the Disney movie “Artistocats “, where a gang of alley cats play jazz. Great pick, love, love, loved it💕💕💕

  • @thewickedchicken82

Damn Ty. You've got the memory flood gate wide open with this one. Back in high school I had a little dixieland band called The Playboys of Dixieland. And yes, Geezer Eddi was in it playing trumpet. I played the tuba, trombone and clarinet. I just listened to the version of this song by the Dukes of Dixieland. That's the version that we did. I even copied the trombone solo. The soulful melody over the minor blues progression is what makes this song such a classic, and why it's been covered by so many bands. Anyway, one of my favorite memories about our little combo was Christmas caroling. It was a blast! We played in the mall and got kicked out every year. We also rolled up on carolers when we saw them at someone's front door, jumped out of the car and started blasting. People would be coming out of their houses to listen. I'm sure the carolers hated to. The best memory's, though, was playing at the old folks home every year. We would play for a hour or so and some of them would get up and dance.
Here is a link to the Dukes of Dixieland version. I think you'll enjoy it. ua-cam.com/video/aXZyMUSlua4/v-deo.html

Hugh Laurie & Stephen Fry had a sketch show for which he wrote & sang parodies. His Springsteen was fun. Fry played the butler Jeeves and Laurie was the great upper class twit Bertie in the show Jeeves & Wooster. Bertie sang and played Minnie the Moocher along with other hits from the late 1920s-30s. Very dry, silly British humor

    This is so cool :)
My nephew was a child actor and he played Dr. House's character as a child towards the end of the series when the doctor was having flashbacks.
Because of this, of course, I have a discriminatory view in favor of Hugh Laurie.
I still think the music is good considering he is just an actor.

  • @chrystlearkan1968

The calibre of musicians on this track is top notch, and Hugh definitely doesn't go begging for talent! As far as his work in the UK goes, I'm unaware of his doing anything but comedy. He did several collaborations with Stephen Fry including Black Adder and Bertie Wooster, as well as A Bit of Fry and Laurie. Some people don't particularly appreciate British humor. It is rather drier than what we're used to stateside or it's raucous and obvious. It would be really cool if you could review any one of these shows or even a portion of one, but if you want to see 'House' as a very young actor in a part where he plays a rather adorably awkward, bumbling character, you should take the time to watch Bertie Wooster just for yourself; just for the fun of it. Most of the series is available on UA-cam. So are Black Adder (starring Rowan Atkinson aka Mr Bean) and A Bit of Fry and Laurie.

    I hear a New Orleans/Havanna nexus, a cross-pollination if you will.
It's reminiscent of, late 19th and early 20th century, Cuban court music.
Avant-Garde Afro-Latin jazz, like Chucho Valdez and Eddie Palmieri, who also draws a lot from Thelonius Monk; play in this style, also. just add percussion...........and, voila!!
